Dragon Update

Brent passed along this request and we worked with all parties involved to change the DRAGON upgrade process to accommodate this for customers. The corresponding FAQs on RED.com will be updated shortly.

NICK

Awesome, I'm glad I can keep the lower 1.0 fan! Thanks guys.

Camera has to arrive in functionally working condition to pass IQC inspection. Any repairs needed will be quoted back to the customer.

There was a post a while back about someone filming an EDM concert and the laser show destroying his sensor. If everything else was in working order but the sensor, and part of the upgrade cost to Dragon is a sensor swap anyways, would he still be charged to completely fix/replace the old Mysterium-X sensor before upgrading?

If that's the case, then I'm very curious about this and RED's plan for the old MX sensors :)

I am curious why the Dragon sensor has only a 90 day warranty? Under Australian law this would have to be one year. I imagine failure rates for sensors are low. Individual pixels occasionally fail but are easily mapped out most cameras although I don't know if that is true of Red cameras? As the price of the sensor upgrade is not trivial the short warranty doesn't count as a vote of confidence. Is a 90 day warranty normal in the USA?

Tom as it is being sold as an upgrade it doesn't have to have a 12 month warranty in Australia. A brand new Dragon would however have to be a minimum 12 months, with exceptions being made up to 3 years in our country.

A warranty in Australia means a "reasonable period of time" and is very loose. Upgrades don't get covered in this. Second hand goods are allowed to be resold with 90days warranty or even in some cases 30day warranty.

In America goods can be sold on "as is" basis which is illegal in Australia now.

BTW Congrats on your Golden Award Sat night.

More particularly, with the reported very low sensor yield, the appeal of a new camera/Red Armour warranty seemingly increases... That's alotta jing for a 90 day wonder, so to say...

Thank you very much

$9k vs $30k...not sure what you mean by this.

Hi Greg!

Well, there are several analyses to make, but one is a comparison of what can be ordered today, including SSD & Mount.

The current, original and MINIMUM cost of an Epic M X $24.7 + $9.5=$34.2K, for a 90 day sensor/board warranty.

The current new, Dragon M = $31.2K., for a 2 year, full camera warranty.

Can't add Armour to the same extent as with a new camera ($ available elsewhere and change this differential a bit), but amortizing the warranty costs alone is easy to calculate...so is a sensor/board failure and repair, not counting down time. As I mentioned, the RED reported low sensor yield has been the cause of delay shipping. That's one problem. If other problems supervene, etc., warranty factors may be paramount, etc....

Thank you very much

I don't get your math on this Nick.
Ive already invested, depreciated and earned a lot of money off of my Epic...why is that relevant? The only thing that matters today is that for roughly $9K I can upgrade my camera to the Dragon...or I can spend $31k and get a new camera. Unless I need two cameras its a hell of a lot cheaper to get the Dragon update.

Ive been a Red customer for over 6 years, and never once have they let me down. They have covered items out of warranty when warranted, they have bent over backwards to support us, they have returned my calls at midnight. I don't expect that to change.

I don't normally get into these types of conversations but I gotta agree with Greg on this one. I've had similar experiences with Red; so far, so good. I'm looking forward to the next 10 years.

This happened to us and indeed we have a confirmation that the swap is possible without additional "repair/replace" costs of the original sensor. We can't film now and are waiting patiently for the dragon upgrade:)

Jarred, i am Epic M / early adopter / Epic X purchase etc, haven't heard anything yet. Can we expect to hear anything before Xmas ?

Looks like the Dragons are going out to high profile sets. They want to see productions with their name on it most likely.

I know people here in Montreal with 3 digit serial numbers and large rental houses - no Dragons here yet, not one. This really is a good though - goes us all time to finish amortizing and set the money aside.

NAB was 7 months ago as we watched the theatre of Epics being converted to Dragon. Jarred i imagine i am not the only one who has put the money aside to pay for the new sensor. It really would be appropriate to give us a realistic time frame so we can decide what to do. If it's going to be another 7 months i can invest this money in another piece of kit before the TAX year is out.

Anyone knows is dragon upgrade starting or not?

Accurate to what was discussed in post #1 of this thread, the Epic Carbon Dragons that were initially ordered and took two/three weeks to fulfill have started to go out and more are being manufactured right this second.

The next round of Dragon sensors comes in December 1st. I don't know if we'll hear much about upgrading more bodies until a bit after those sensors arrive and get tested out.

Fingers crossed for all on upgrades and new bodies before the year is out, but the good news is what information that this thread gives is actually happening.

In reality and mostly my own theory November, December, January, and February are going to likely be the big months for pushing Dragons out into the wild and things should normalize from there on out.
