Dragon Update

Yes, Phil, we've known the Dragon was coming for a long time. But I'm not sure what that has to do with what we're saying here.

Of course it's true that anyone with an Epic can upgrade at some point. But in post #227 you said, "Well, you'll still have the advantage of upgrade priority with the Epic-M, so that to me is a sound investment." That does not seem to be true.

The priority window where bing an Epic-M owner gave you any priority in the Dragon Queue was very short. You had to order within the exclusive Epic-M window during the first day (or two? or three?) of NAB. I really don't know how long it was, but I know that I ordered on the fourth day after the window to order opened and owning an Epic-M gives me no priority. So it was something less that the 4-day duration of NAB. It's not the end of the world, but it's not what I understood the deal to be. I understood (as you stated in post #227) that my ownership of an Epic-M gave me priority in the upgrade. I'm now told that's not true. Priority went to those Epic-M owners who were able to make the purchase (or at least the commitment to purchase) during the short window of exclusivity. I was busy then, so I don't get the priority.

Again, it's not the end of the world; I'll get the upgrade in due time, but it is a pretty confusing loyalty program. After all, it even seems to have confused you. :)

Hi David,

Did RED directly contact U, ay any point, regarding the Dragon upgrade, from your epic-M?

Thank you very much

Sorry about the confusion. I was indeed referring to early Epic-M adopters and the other deals listed within the details Jarred posted. I have no clue what happens if you order an Epic-M Mysterium-X today in regard to upgrading to Dragon and having priority. Although, it's clearly stated that Carbon Dragon is the quickest way to get there.

  • CARBON DRAGON -New Carbon Dragon orders are manufactured and shipped on their own schedule. 2-3 weeks after order.

  • PRIORITY 1: “EPIC-M DRAGON / Early Adopter / Purchased EPIC-X Within 30 Days of NAB” Upgrades*

  • PRIORITY 2.1: “EPIC-M DRAGON New Camera Orders: After all owners of “EPIC-M / Early Adopter / Purchased EPIC-X Within 30 Days of NAB” have been notified they are eligible to send in cameras for upgrade*, new EPIC-M DRAGON orders will begin to be processed.

  • PRIORITY 2.2: EPIC-X DRAGON Upgrades: After all owners of “EPIC-M / Early Adopter / Purchased EPIC-X Within 30 Days of NAB” have been notified they are eligible to send in cameras for upgrade*, EPIC-X DRAGON upgrades will begin to be processed.**

Reading Jarred's first post at face value, Epic-M's seem to have some priority over the Epic-X.

Phil,

Have you started to drink the coolaid? Not sure if I get where your coming from here.

I have an X, I've been very appreciative at each opportunity to upgrade and I've been on it. The first time with Stage 3, almost missed it by a day. The second time with Dragon, I was in the top 10. I knew it was coming and I was a total zelot nerd jumping into that line.

Common senses tells me if someone got a M, they deserve to upgrade before my X. We've all been waiting since NAB anyway, so what's the problem? It's really up to RED and through all these upgrades they've been really good to us. I do think REDs "upgrade," program has gone far enough. From 18k on the R1, we've climbed to the tip of the mountain, top of the line, hands down camera best camera we could get for our money, No bullshit. Epic Dragon.

How many "M's" are out there in the world even? 500 or less? If any of you guys care about your "M" upgrade timing, create a thread in the complaint department, I'll support you. I have no problem with you "cutting" in. Who knows by January/Feburary how fast these Dragons will be cracking out. How many upgrades M's+X's are there total?

All this Dragon talk makes me want to squeeze in shooting another feature before the new year.

Well I wouldn't say that it's a very small of a window in reality. Several months and nothing stopping you from upgrading later once things open up to the X folks.

We've known Dragon was coming for over two years now, and while tricky to land hard numbers to service everybody's new bodies and upgrades, all should have expected it's release "at some point".

Phil,

No Kool-Aid drunk posting on my side. I just read and understand the first post in the thread regarding Epic-M Mysterium-X > Dragon upgrade, early adopters, and the NAB deal.

Like Brandon said:

That said, if you buy a new M today I don't know exactly what the expectation is and what Red will provide. It sounds to me like new Ms get treated like Xs based off of what people have posted.

Was I confusing?

Yeah I think that sounds right. Early M purchases before NAB2013 get priority over X's. Any M purchased after NAB is in the same line. Makes sense.

D,

Your Epic M was purchased before the Stage 3 Epic X upgrades?

That's not actually true, Phil. At least not according to my bomb squad rep. I ordered the Dragon update on the Thursday of NAB, and it turns out that because I didn't order during the exclusive M window on Monday, I an not in the Priority 1 group.

So the priority doesn't follow my Epic-M at all, it depended on my being available to order on the first day of NAB during the "exclusive" window. I wasn't, so my Epic-M no longer has any priority.

EPIC M

Hi,

What I understand is that EPIC M owners who purchased EPIC-M before NAB2013 can still opt for an upgrade to Dragon and they will be in the EPIC M line and get priority over EPIC-X upgrade to Dragon...because as far as I know there was a start date for EPIC-M owners to opt for upgrade but there was no end date for the same....can anyone from RED chime in on this..
Thanks

D,

Your Epic M was purchased before the Stage 3 Epic X upgrades?

Yes, it was shipped in July of 2011, Ordered during NAB in 2011. (Or actually requested -- in those days you had to be approved by Red to buy an Epic-M, it wasn't a simple purchase.) I already had a Stage 2 Epic-X on order, but had a project in the works that would significantly benefit from HDRX.

This is not true. Purchasing an Epic-M before NAB 2013 gave you a ticket to a short window of exclusivity when you could pre-order the Dragon upgrade and have the priority 1 status Jared mentions in the first post in this thread. That was only during the first couple of days of NAB 2013. Once that passed, Epic-Ms no longer have priority. Again, this is according to my Bomb Squad rep, who tells me my M is not in the first priority group, and I pre-ordered on the 4th day (Thursday) of NAB.

I thought I was an early adopter. I've owned my Epic-M since mid-2011. But it turns out that "early adopters" refers to those who pre-ordered Dragon during the exclusive window during NAB 2013. When you adopted your Epic-M doesn't figure into it beyond giving you access to that window of opportunity. I was working during the short exclusivity window, so my Epic-M no longer gives me priority. And again, it's not the end of the world, but it's been confusing, and I'm trying to clear up some of that confusion. If you did not order Dragon during the exclusive window during NAB 2013, it doesn't matter when you bought it, your Epic-M carries no more priority than one that is ordered today.

The priority is based on when you ordered the upgrade, so if you ordered in May you have priority over an M ordered today.

A few tidbits:

* "Early adoptor" as far as the DRAGON upgrade priority was RED ONE-based. That is, you placed a deposit on a RED ONE before Aug 31, 2007 that you took delivery of. These are the people who took the leap of faith to get in line before we had started shipping cameras.

* Correct, EPIC-M priority was the window of about 3 days during NAB when only people who owned Ms, the aforementioned early adoptors, and people who has taken delivery of an X in the 30 days leading up to NAB.

* Notifications for the upgrade will be based on pre-order date/time stamp. Once we are at your spot in queue, you will get the email saying we are ready to accept your camera. Does not matter if you are ordering an M or X as far as that goes.

* Also, don't assume this is the last opportunity where M owners will get priority on something. And there will also be special offerings for carbon fiber owners as well in the future.

Hope that helps.

Hi Brent,

thanks for the clarification AND advance notice on Dragon CF prioritization. Since many Epic owners were out of country, or otherwise unavailable and/or unaware of the advantage to register for Dragon upgrade at NAB, during the small window, could a policy going forward, include email/phone notification of upgrades, even if only communicated to the advantaged potential participants?

Thank you very much

Fury

Nick, all people who qualified for that status (ie, priority ordering period) were sent emails in conjunction with going live on RED.com.

So if I buy Epic-M Dragon new from the store:
http://www.red.com/store/products/epic-m-red-dragon-w-side-ssd-and-lens-mount

Will it be shipped before new dragon-X purchases?

Where does it sit in relation to epic-x's upgrading to dragon?

I know carbon ships first

That would be priority 2.1. The only dragons that jump the line is the Carbon Dragons... which are still rolling through production at a healthy rate.
