  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FIlm professionals petition seeks to bring back old Final Cut Pro

Kona had beta drivers out within a week, I think. It's extended desktop only - it's what everyone is doing. Matrox, I believe, said the hooks weren't there for professional video output yet.

If you read the 24 page PDF released by kona there is a workflow for editing to tape. Not from FCPX, which may never happen, but from Aja TV you can export the sequence to a file and edit the file to tape.

The monitoring is extended desktop but coming through the kona it's broadcast levels not just an extended desktop.

Most pro shops have kona or decklink. (I've got kona)

I'm pretty sure decklink will have something soon enough.

David

Yes, you can edit to tape through VTR Exchange. But if you can't monitor your work in FCPX, how do you know what you're laying to tape is safe and accurate?

From the PDF, top of page 7: "Note: the quality of the output produced during editorial should be considered preview quality." That's what they had released right after FCPX launched. An extended desktop.

You write: "The monitoring is extended desktop but coming through the kona it's broadcast levels not just an extended desktop. " Where is this information? The words 'Broadcast' and "Level' aren't in the PDF anywhere. I didn't go through the entire Kona site so I might have missed it, but it's not in the .pdf. I don't believe this is any different than what they did earlier.

Asked my refund today.

Ordered Adobe Production Premium with the Switch-offer.

Maybe FCP X will be a professional tool one day. But not today. I won't buy it untill then.
I'll keep on using FCP 7 too, because it's still a very good editor. But I'll begin playing in Premiere etc. and we'll see.

If you told me 6 months ago I would be buying Adobe after a couple of months after the introduction of FCP X too which I looked forward so much, I would have laughed. There you have it, Apple...

David... Extended desktop through a Kona card is still extended desktop. With extended desktop I would have no way to monitor a 10 bit RGB 4444 3gbps single link SDI for example. Yes I do have a Decklink card and a monitor that supports that format. I also love seeing footage in the highest quality form that it can be displayed at. Extended desktop is not even a video format. What frame rate is your desktop at... Is it interlaced or progressive... Do you want to monitor your desktop or your video footage? Your video footage playing on your desktop is not a broadcast video format. How can you rely on a preview for broadcast monitoring?

I totally oppose it. Never look back.

I agree. 999$ for the cross over program and I'm now the proud owner of a media composer. FCP were are done. I know avid won't desert me me now. Hopefully avid won't remember I deserted her.

Just keep buying her drinks and she'll be OK with it.

Instead of shooting and discussing and cursing and here and there and all over again and switch to CS 5.5 and bad boys and not pro, perhaps pro one day;;;;;;;;............... can't we just honor the courage to innovate and help the FCP X team to perform better and implement what we "professionals" believe is vital to do our job in the future. I propose to make a list of "immediate needs" to face the transition and help the companies who have invested in FCP to go on and be able to switch asap. to FCP X. Regarding the argument of "more simple" is not professional I would like to quote A. Einstein "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.

Here my first wish:

1. "Native editing of "R3D files" and RMD sidecar modification plugin.

I agree, but you forget one simple fact about all this... they don't listen to us professionals.

If the mountain does not come to the prophet, the prophet will go to the mountain. It is always a question of how we ask. (perhaps I am naive) but lets use the word, please.

@Andrae

I see news programs "broadcasting" YouTube videos every day. I see many documentaries that use web video in their content and storytelling.

You are stuck on your very rigid view of what broadcast is.

Basically I could feed super 8 video into a kona or decklink card, run it through a legalizer and it's all "broadcast quality" because it's broadcastable. You are identified with broadcast being "professional". Marketers replaced the word broadcast with "pro" for this very reason. Nobody identifies with "broadcast" anymore. It's called premier pro not premiere broadcast.

Broadcast quality has been complete bullshit since DV was introduced.

Some networks have tighter specs than others but they will put anything on the air.

Broadcast is going the same direction as film.

Your version if broacast may mean conforming to standards that barely exist and cling to analog broadcast models which are falling away (like SD NTSC). RED does not even have a REC 709 spec because the invented their own "standard" for color.

"Broadcast quality" has no meaning or definition anymore except in very limited circumstance with networks who require these "specs" as a delivery specification. You can not tell me that what is coming-out of FCP X is NOT broadcast quality. Anyone here would tell you that is nonsense.

If apple release a 4k display and you hooked it up as a second monitor are you telling me that 4k image could not be broadcast.

Stop this nonsense.

Somewhere there us a tiny little violin playing for you and all the professionals.

You tell me why the mac you are editing in with any piece of software makes you such a pro.

Please.

A professional is someone who does not need a soother while putting some shots together.

1. Turn on the scopes in FCP X or buy a legalizer and run it all through a legalizer at the tape output stage.

Man, don't you guys test anything.

David, I fully agree with you. I am just watching SKY High definition broadcast on my 65" TV set. The quality of broadcast nowadays is getting worse and is by no means anymore a reference, over 50% of the material I get on my screen is barely reaching VHS quality, and this in the year 2011. Even the films they screen reach barely 720p and each youtube HD movie has more resolution and quality. Broadcast is dead, I give them 3 years, if (excluding North Korea and Miramar).

Maybe it's just me but I understood half of that... but then there's the fact I work on a PC with Avid. FCP and Mac is something I've tried and had an interest of investing inm but Apple just don't seem to get their shit together. I still get more out of my PC workflow, for me it's more flexible, stable, open and powerful. I don't need it to be amateur-easy, I want power... uuuuunlimiteeeed pooooweeeer!
Apple can't give me that today.

Totally agree. If that is what works for you, go for it. That is what is great about being a consumer right now. It's full of excellent options for the individual. I'm not going to get into a MAC PC debate. That's history, MAC's are on INTEL processors.

If you need to be on PC, that is perfect for you. Great.

Nothing more to see here....

If Steve Jobs would have listen to all sceptic and so called "professionals" he would have never launched iPod, iPhone, iPad ASO. I think FCP X has potential and will surprise us in the future. Sometimes it's good to leave old trails. Or Jim and RED? I remember REDs earliest days, when 99% of the professionals I talked about RED laughed and tried to explain me, why it couldn't be possible, that a producer of sunglasses should be cleverer than everybody else in the camera industry. Lot of them are huge RED fans now and have as by a miracle "forgotten" what they told me years ago. What I've learned? Just do it, follow your heart, your imagination, don't listen to naysayers, they will follow.

Bingo

But a lot if people in this thread say you can't compare RED One and FCP X.

I happen to agree with you.

David.

Shhhh dont show to much enthusiasm here, the villagers get restless :P
LOL!
