  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Update

I actually hope it's a month out. Waiting on a few huge freelance checks to finally come in and I don't want to miss out. But hopefully things start upgrading this summer.

Paul--there are people lining up for the upgrade no matter what it looks like. I understand the philosophy of releasing footage and starting upgrades immediately: to get people talking. Get footage and cameras out into the world and attract attention.

As camera owners we are the stakeholders in this--what Red wants, we want. I think we all want a sudden flurry of interest in the new camera. That includes independent users posting footage soon after the release.
oh, don't get me wrong...i am in line....just find it strange that nobody has seen anything....and i think i would let my spot in line slip if i can't get a good look at what is coming.....i understand what you are talking about, but i have to use my camera and the epic is amazing as is....

Has anyone actually seen close up an upgraded Dragon camera at NAB or anywhere else? I was wondering if Red has opened up the throat to the sensor for the slightly larger Dragon sensor also a more significant widening would allow a wider range of mounts and lenses.

I believe the only modification in there is the the actual sensor and OLPF.

in order of personal preference:
1. Dynamic Range
2. Color rendition (out of the box pre color)
3. Better highlight rolloff
4. Better noise control (should be noise free at 2000ISO, current 800ISO is too noisy compared to competing systems)
5. Better handling of tungsten lighting (blue channel improvements)
6. Improved visual sharpness of images (images never look sharp at 100%)
7. Improved and solid user interface with rock solid firmware
8. Lastly resolution increase

I already love the cam as is. This is just my opinion if RED wants to reclaim the lead over the new competition.

Don't forget the additional benefit of having a lower noise floor... cleaner images result in smaller REDCODE files. 6K won't be as big of a leap in file size in certain shooting conditions. :-)

Isn't it true that 6K takes less computing power than 5K because of the downsample math being even? (In editing and post environments)

I love noise free images haha.

nobody has seen any clips as of right now? so we have to be at least a month, probably more like a couple off? or will the release date of the camera come at the same time as the first official files? i am just as excited as everybody else here but i will have to see all the promised improvements and i am really looking forward to that....i just can't imagine first samples coming out and the camera shipping/upgrades starting the week after....
the dragon jpeg looked great and all but it really did not say that much either (other then resolution), not sure why nothing gets released if THE date is getting close....
You're answering your own question... from the sound of it, the IMAGE (and the color science behind it) is what they are waiting to perfect. Once perfect, then let the upgrades begin. It sounds like the physical things like the sensor and power supply are all ready... just nailing down the color science... the NEXT footage is going to be so HIGHLY SCRUTINIZED, they have to tweak until they feel ready for the scrutiny.

Tom i went to NAB this year for the first time and all i saw were geeks in a climate controlled room testing cameras with a RED DRAGON logo on the side and there wasn't one physically working anywhere showing a picture.

For all i know they were just putting stickers on the side of an EPIC. No one at NAB could answer anything about dragon and the image circle size compared to the Epic at 5k.

That's funny...it's pretty much common knowledge the image circle will be larger (I believe to a crop factor of 1.2, vs 1.3, right?)

This:

There are Epics being upgraded.. but we are not shipping yet.

Phil you saw nothing..... shhhhhhh......

I saw nothing. However, in this picture here you can see the Red Epic Dragon capturing at 6K 2:1. This is a real camera and not a 3D rendering. So is that car, despite what you may think :)

From what's been stated about the power supply I think there's a board or two in there that needs to be popped in, perhaps more. Could be wrong.

I'll stay away from the 6K/5K less computing power thing as the specifics behind that, REDCODE, and everything else is outside of my expertise. However, one thing that has been stated is that the 6K material may take up less REDMAG space than expected due to the cleaner image being created.

Nothing has been announced regarding Dragon specs that's outside what we learned at NAB 2013. However, as Red has stated in the past, anything can change.

What we know? Power issues solved. New color science was/is being worked on which is a real key to the puzzle. And also, Jim recently stated that Dragon is near, which is why I keep checking outside my windows every 15 minutes and more importantly why I've been gearing up like crazy.

The Dragon is late... but worth the wait.

I have to say that the skies have parted and the sun is shining... finally.

For customer, the sun will shine when it arrives in front our door. I would the say the wind is blowing

I don't recall a moment in my life where I was excited about "brain surgery", but I'm really looking forward to the upgrade.

First thing I did after NAB 2013 was wrestle the funds together for Epic Dragon.

The wait was somewhat expected, and it is in your signature, but every camera you've released and I've had my hands on impressed me.
