Dragon Update

Reminding me of the late night posts about Spike. Glad to hear the sun is shining, Jim. What's best is that you are, and always have been, your best customer.

We all benefit. :-)

Jim, I wanted to say that conceiving, inventing, designing, building and finally delivering the frontier of technology is a tremendous achievement. You have done this several times. Columbus in 1492 was also 'late' in getting to India.

Get it right and take your time. Dragon for me is the icing on an allready near to perfect camera.

Don't let the RED bashers cut the wings of the Dragon with a nearly perfect fine tune. Don't believe on the SW update that will perfect IT later. Once people have a believe they stick to it. Don't give them a chance!

You allready know that.

I can wait.

Pat

?

Be very careful. I get pissed off easily.

Jim

For all of the wait, this is the first time, an indication that sound Dragon sensor is finally pass whatever test or QC that you are hoping for. It's a wind blowing for me,finally, a move. But my sunshine will be when the camera arrives. I havent get a single clue on how the picture is going to be, except hearing good things about it from some people.

It is not an objection or any intention to pissed you off. Yes, i can wait, you never hear me whinning about it, not even once.

I am sure your intentions were positive with your first post. But I have to agree that it did come off a bit harsh and disrespectful. Maybe it was that last comeback attempt involving the word wind. Mr. Jannard is the one responsible for delivering this new technology and his coming here to let us know about the progress is a privilege. If you don't approve, that's fine. But I believe word choice is important.

Thanks Lopez. Well i never said i dont approve on the message, i dont even think that way. In fact this is my first reaction on Dragon sensor, where i never post before in this matter.

I dont know how "wind" can be a harsh word. But anyway, since english isnt my first language, it could be it has a total different indication on your end. We say it most of the time here and we dont have people get offended. Another reason why discussion on a forum is bad. No face reaction, no voice, only words. Assumption is made easily.

Anyway, i rest my case. Thanks for the feedback.

I suspected that was the case. That's why I said I'm sure your intentions were positive. If you want to understand why your comment sounded harsh you can check out the third definition here for the word wind:

Oh dear, that would be reaaalllyyy farr from what i intended to say.

Thanks for your time to share it. Appreciate it very much.

In that case, i have to say. Congrats to everyone on RED ! I have a guy who swear to me that i wont be disapointed when i see Dragon. That was the first positive wind and i trust him. Be careful tho, not the third meaning of wind.

Thanks

You're welcome. I am really glad this cleared it up. I hope Jim read this last post of yours and understand this was just a case of lost in translation. I also hope he'll keep posting updates. We really want to know about Dragon's progress.

Cheers :)

Please take the time to get it right. It has to be right ! Dragon is very important to get its feet on top of the competition. I prefer that way rather than rushing things out. Im sure Jim knows. He's a reasonable man.

We are ready to do an objective comparison, head to head with other brand once it hits the market.

Patiently waiting while still busy on Epic-X and Red One

Show us the shine JIM!!!

I can't wait to see whats new with the Dragon, the Epic blew me away and I know the Dragon will also because its what they do. I know about deadlines and telling people this and that not knowing the set backs. I tell my actors.. you can complain about how long its taking but when the project is released you'll be so happy that how long it took won't matter. Greatness is time consuming the draw back is I let you in on a great secret too early =)

I have to say that the skies have parted and the sun is shining... finally.

Jim

This at 1:29 AM, in SoCAL. Must be a lotta farhhh, in that Dragon...

Thank you very much

Dragon Update....

Dragon Update....

Hi Jim,

Congrats and hope to get our M upgraded soon....

Harcharan

Congratulations, having just ordered the Epic, the next "race" has already started. Keep going to keep us on the toes. ;o)

(Weather here in L.A., clouds are gone, and temperatures are going up this week, the Dragon seems to breathe nicely, well done)

Dragon MUST kick ass and blow cameras like the F55, F65 and Alexa XT out of the water in terms of dynamic range and it's noise floor, or it will retain it's current position in my end of the world. The lack of built-in ProRes as well as multiple inputs & outputs for way too long caused it to be ignored by many DPs for big productions and episodic television. Lots of low-budget productions, music videos, pilots and promos are being shot with RED here because rental prices have plummeted since 2011. My Epic hasn't been rented since August of last year except for a couple of days here and there. Good thing I'm not relying on that income, just shooting my own jobs on the Epic or I would've had to sell it. The increased upgrade price for Dragon from $6K to $9K was quite a blow to be honest. That $3K difference is unfortunately just enough to keep me from being able to upgrade for quite a while unless by some miracle I get a rental for a feature or another project that demands it (and pays enough to cover the upgrade cost). Please keep in mind not all of us are rental/production companies with large budgets - some of us are actually stretching our own budgets to buy and maintain these cameras... But then again, for 90% of my own work the Mysterium X delivers plenty of what I need in terms of both DR and resolution :-)

Yes, the market is quite flooded with cameras. But talk to the guys that rent out alexas and F65's and see what they say... also ask them about costs and upgrade costs. Basically the cameras is no longer the selling point in any rental deal. Here in stockholm you get a free epic if you rent the rest of your gear at one of the major rental houses. And when I go to another local place they always have about 10 to 15 alexas on the shelf that is not rented out. (they also have a F65 since it came out that pretty much never been used, and small piles of epics and scarlets.)

These days most rental houses have huge warehouses filled with gear, usally they got more gear at home then out on jobs... Cameras are now no different, since they are actually so cheap, It's not like before, they do not cost like the rest of the gear combined, instead the cameras are about equal in cost as a decent light unit.

So if you look at it that way it's not so strange, it's like you bought one Arri sun and you are surprised it's not possible to rent it out.

Cameras will be rented together with the rest, magliners, lenses, lights, grip gear and such and there is far more players in that market today than it's ever been before so basically buying a camera to rent it out is really tough buissness. Basically you need a really good selling point to make people choose your camera, no matter if it's an Epic, Scarlet, Alexa, F65, or even black magic.

So far the workflow of the epic has not really landed well. But I think as soon as the XT cameras comes. The DP's want's to push the RAW button on the alexa XT, and as soon as they start to do that people will start to understand what a wonderful format r3d is... Arri raw is not to play with, it's heavy stuff, moves seriously slow, does not allow playback is a drag for post. And using a combo of proress and Arri raw for offline and online is really not a nice workflow it involves keeping track of dual files etc. And XT if i'm not wrong does not allow RAW high speed recording. About the same goes for the Sony cameras. Try play with the F65 material...The weight is quite amazing.
