  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DRAGON-or-HELIUM

I have the distinct feeling that once Helium color is released, we will all kiss the Dragon sensor bye bye for good. Helium looks to be an entirely different kind of a beast.

Tell that to Phil Holland and his new VV Dragon sensor. I very much doubt that about the Dragon sensor.

well first of all.

all of the helium footage available to date is utilizing Dragon Color.

it has been stated by the red team that DRAGON footage will be able to apply the new Helium color presets in post

it has also been stated that EPIC-W can swap to a dragon Sensor later in the Future.

DOPs like Michael Bay use "multiple Ravens" along side his Helium right now

these things all tell me DRAGON is not dead by any means.

What led to that distinct feeling?
If you can supply some evidence, it would help some of us who are not committed, but still glancing over at the Oct 11th deadline.
At this point, we've seen cleaner shadows, faster clipped highlights, and more resolution.

Much more shadow detail. Big jump in resolution. Much cleaner image overall in the entire ISO range, and all of this without an optimized color science. So yes, I am amped up. As far as the highlights go I think the debate is still ongoing. From the R3Ds posted online, the way a Helium image can be pushed or pulled is much more than anything that can be done with a Dragon image.

I see "more exposure" and not so "coarse noise" in Dragon image, speaking of shadow detail. Maybe it's color science...

What res, etc is the helium still at? The pic is cropped n cuts off your notes. Do you have full res link. these uploads are just terrible, although I do see coarse noise. thx

It's a simple FullHD crop out of 6K and 8K R3D-s, but browser somehow scaled it down to 1600X900.

Thanks, Kemalettin!

Summary of a recent Helium experience with a highly skilled DoP Reduser folks have likely heard of, void of "more = better" principle of reasoning and with zero intent of fluff:

Helium is magic.

This is hardly scientific, but I've been shooting with 8K Helium Weapon and 6K Dragon Weapon (carbon) everyday for the last month and I will be ordering my own Epic-W on the 11th. The Helium color science isn't available and there hasn't been time so I haven't done any direct pixel peeping comparisons. But I have been comfortably cranking the Helium up to ISO 2000 regularly without hesitation and the images look fabulous right out of the camera (in terms of noise). 1280 has been my personal limit for achieving that with the Dragon sensor thus far. Daylight images with Helium look great at ISO800. I don't really feel like I know enough yet to speak on native ISOs, but I am a devout Motion Mount user so bring on native 1280!

Almost all of my shooting on both cameras has been at max data rate (lowest possible compression at whatever image setting).

I'm most curious to see what Epic-W data rates are like compared to Epic Dragon.

Assuming U mean Epic-W. Can u link to a R3D of your daylight 800 ISO Helium shots?

Oh yeah, Epic-W. I'll go correct that. Thanks!

Shooting an IMAX feature so nothing to share until 2018 unfortunately...
