Thanks for doing these tests.
I'm curious about the older Cooke zooms, like the 18-100, 20-100 and 25-250 MkIII. They certainly won't cover 6K, but I'd love to know if they now work at 5K HD. That would be great.
If the Angenieux 25-250 HR covers 5K, maybe there is some hope ?
That would be great news !Thanks Nils. Those should all work with 5K on Dragon as that's within all of their design specs, though I haven't tested everything just yet.
Dragon 5K will now work with many older lenses.
New Sony Cine Alta Primes?
Now the Leica M series lenses are a bit interesting. Truthfully they were designed for a different type of imaging plane/technology. However, optically most of them look fantastic on Dragon. The new Dragon sensor box/bushing area allows for the lenses as wide as the Summilux-M 24mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4 to be attached. Which is new. And they look great! Everything more telephoto from there looks good too.
A lens to look out for would be the Summilux-M 21mm f/1.4. The retrofocus design isn't ideal and you'll notice a hit in image quality. Again, this glass wasn't designed for this system. However, 24mm and up you have an extremely compact system. (I'm looking at you octocopter and lightweight gimbal peeps)
im wondering if super 16mm wide angle primes will still be relevant for high speed???
anyone have any thoughts?
Yep. This has been "standard practice for many" for a while for many.
And I'll add another thought. If you want to emulate the S16 experience shoot in 2.5K on Dragon. It's approximately the same size as the S16 frame in width.
In terms of resolution, properly scanned and processed that's about what you'd be getting out of that format if you were shooting film. Red has clearly designed Dragon to have a bit relevance in comparison to film formats. 5K now lands in S35 3-perf range and all S35 lenses cover that format.
Anyone shooting the Leica-M's shorter than 50 on the Dragon? I remember hearing that the lens port had more clearance to accommodate this. Anything on that? Wondering how that 21/1.4 performs on Dragon.
i'm glad to hear you say this, Josh. I've been seriously considering the DP zooms for a while, but the Motion Mount thing has me somewhat scared off. I don't have MM at this point anyway (although I plan to get one in the future), and the DP's still seem like one of the best things going for the $$ and ease of use. If you get a chance, would you mind posting some Dragon/DP images?Quick / dirty test on the Angenieux 16-42 and 30-80 shows they cover both 6KWS and 6KHD no problem. For those who want a smokin deal on a great zoom - buy an Angie from a fire sale fool. The Angies don't work with the Motion Mount because of the deep flange. Fuck it - they're a 2.8 lens that only gets better a couple stops up.
