  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Didn't see the 17-50mm on the list, definitely vignettes on both ends at full frame 6K.

After testing today found that the 8R Ultra Prime is a 5K lens. No chance for 6K :-(
 
Here are my findings from a Fujinon Premier 24-180 T2.6 lens

At 6K-WS:

Focused at 6': UVI until 35mm, Soft/slight Vignette until 40mm (f2.8) 60mm (f8) 80mm (at f22)
Focused at 50': UVI until 42mm, Soft/slight Vignette until 45mm (f2.8) 55mm (f8) 72mm (at f22)

So kind of a 4.5:1 zoom (40-180) in 6K horizontal format, with caveats

At 5.5K-HD:

Focused at 6': Very slight vignette at 24mm (f2.8) 29mm (f8) 42mm (f22)
Focused at 50': Clear at 28mm (f2.8) 36mm (f8) 50mm (f22)

So kind of a 7:1 zoom (28-196) in equivalent 6K horizontal format, with fewer caveats

At 5K-FF:

No observable vignette/UVI until focused >= 10' at f22, >= 12' at f16, 18' at f11 (clear to inf at f8 and below)
Focused at 50': Clear at 24mm (f2.6-5.6) shifting to UVI above f8
UVI gone above 26mm at f8, 28mm f11-f22

So kind of a 7.5:1 zoom (29-216) in equivalent 6K horizontal format, with almost no caveats

is it just me, or does Phil's original links to prime set's coverage no longer work?
 
As far as I know his server got hacked. So his data was down for a while. Seems to be working again though.

Yes I was hacked. That was a real treat to come home to. I worked with my hosting service, fixed all the weird Apache stuff, and the site is back up and running. Was down for a few hours. Sorry about that.
 
Love to hear about Cooke s5's also if anyone can test…

How is the Angenieux Optimo 45-120mm T2.8 Zoom with the dragon sensor at 6 FF?
 
How much does the RED 17/50 cover ... in 1:85? 5K or better? widest being ? 20 ?

Thanks Steve. If I can find the lens easily enough I can test it. I've got a slew of lenses I need to test, but I'm currently shooting on a feature the rest of the week.

From what I recall talking to Matthew Duclos about that particular lens is that there's two versions. The older 17-80mm doesn't even cover S35 FullAp and essentially was made for the Academy frame, so on Dragon 5K "might" happen. This was pretty much why Angenieux made the 19.5-90mm update. Not as wide, a bit more reach, a smidge slower due to the small extension provided by the newer element(s). Which is sort of the way they handle this generally speaking as lenses get updated in their lineup for larger format sensors.

Last week I got my Dragon and today I've been doing the first tests with it.

So far the most surprising thing that I've seen is that our 18mm Zeiss 1.4 "B Speed" lens (bayonet mount, adapted to PL) covers 6K FF. There's a very slight vignetting in the corners, outside the 2.4:1 marked area, but it's perfectly usable except when stopped down to T/11 and focused at infinity, as the vignetting becomes more obvious. At 6K HD it works nicely.

The 18mm Zeiss 1.3 Superspeed MKII covers 6K HD but it's circle of image seems to be smaller than that of the "B Speeds". From 25mm to 85mm, every lens in both sets covers 6K FF. Impressive.

18mm Cooke S4 covers 5.5K HD safely. 14mm needs to work at 5K.

16mm Ultra Prime vignettes too much at 6K FF, but it's safe to use it at 6K HD. 20mm UP works 100% at 6K FF.

16mm Zeiss Standard 2.1 covers 5.5K and 6K HD may be used for 2.40:1 ratio applications. 20mm Zeiss Standard covers 6K HD, and might be usable at 6K FF if you're framing for 2.40:1.

Old zooms such as Cooke Varotal 25-250mm T/3.9 MKII cover 5K HD. The very rare Techno-Cooke 18.5mm-92.5mm T/2.3 only covers 4K. 5K is doable from 20-21mm upwards.

I also quick-tested an old Cooke S2 18mm single lens that we may rehouse in a near future and that has been unserviced in a long time and it's 100% fine at 5K HD. The rare Cooke Telepanchro 152mm covers 6K FF nicely, though, as you may expect for a telephoto lens. And it's a terrific one.
