  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Lens Coverage Information

Extensive image circle tests today at Hollywood Camera with the new Aerial Filmworks' Carbon Fiber Dragon. We hope to publish in the very near future.
Here's a photo with one of our Canon 30-300mm Cinema Zooms:

Got some testing in on the Red Pro Zoom 18-85mm T2.9 last week. Here's the info:

Red Pro Zoom 18-85mm T2.9
@32mm 6K FF vignette, clear at 40mm
@25mm covers 6K WS
@22mm covers 6K HD

Thanks for doing these tests.

I'm curious about the older Cooke zooms, like the 18-100, 20-100 and 25-250 MkIII. They certainly won't cover 6K, but I'd love to know if they now work at 5K HD. That would be great.

If the Angenieux 25-250 HR covers 5K, maybe there is some hope ?

Thanks Nils. Those should all work with 5K on Dragon as that's within all of their design specs, though I haven't tested everything just yet.

Being able to shoot with my 20-100 at 5k would be fantastic, so I'd be really interested in knowing about any results. Now, if I only had a Dragon. I'm currently using a Scarlet and debating whether I should upgrade to Epic and get a couple Schneider Xenon's or other mid range lenses to cover 5k, or going with Epic Dragon and keeping my 20-100 with the budget I have. If only I could have it all.

That would be great news !

I think a Cooke 18-100 (or a 20-100) is next on my shopping list, beautiful lens. Even more so if it now covers 5K. That's probably one of the great upsides of Dragon that are rarely mentioned : Dragon 5K will now work with many older lenses.

Phi,
I'm looking to buy a Master Zoom 16.5-110……Any tests done on that beast as far as 6K HD or better. I had it on my Epic today and it "cleared" every 5K option.
Steve

Downside to owning only one Dragon is that when the camera is gone I can't test stuff out!

Once it's back in my hands I'll get back to experiments and data collecting.

@ Steve, if It's clearing 5K on MX, that certainly means a minimum of 5.5K support, which also means it likely fairs well at 6K HD. I'll have to take a look. That's a great lens.

im wondering if super 16mm wide angle primes will still be relevant for high speed???
anyone have any thoughts?

@ Samir, here's Phil's assessment of the Leica M lenses with Dragon.

Now the Leica M series lenses are a bit interesting. Truthfully they were designed for a different type of imaging plane/technology. However, optically most of them look fantastic on Dragon. The new Dragon sensor box/bushing area allows for the lenses as wide as the Summilux-M 24mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4 to be attached. Which is new. And they look great! Everything more telephoto from there looks good too.

A lens to look out for would be the Summilux-M 21mm f/1.4. The retrofocus design isn't ideal and you'll notice a hit in image quality. Again, this glass wasn't designed for this system. However, 24mm and up you have an extremely compact system. (I'm looking at you octocopter and lightweight gimbal peeps)

Yep. This has been "standard practice for many" for a while for many.

And I'll add another thought. If you want to emulate the S16 experience shoot in 2.5K on Dragon. It's approximately the same size as the S16 frame in width.

In terms of resolution, properly scanned and processed that's about what you'd be getting out of that format if you were shooting film. Red has clearly designed Dragon to have a bit relevance in comparison to film formats. 5K now lands in S35 3-perf range and all S35 lenses cover that format.

i was more wondering if its a necessity for higher frame rates such as 200fps, or can you stay in 4k now for a speed like that and still use 35mm format glass.

Hey Phil,
Got my Dragon today. Quick / dirty test on the Angenieux 16-42 and 30-80 shows they cover both 6KWS and 6KHD no problem. The 6KWS crop shows a little corner vignette from 16mm to about 16.5mm. At 6KHD it's clean. Kinda cool watching the FOV get a little wider when toggling from 5KHD to 6KHD - my wide angle lenses just got a bit wider.
I will upload a simple test vid soon. For those who are dumping your Angies at fire sale prices . . . fools. You don't deliver 6KFF so who really cares if they don't reach deep into the FF corners? For those who want a smokin deal on a great zoom - buy an Angie from a fire sale fool. I'm pulling mine off RU now since the current market has priced them based on ignorance. Great lens when you need a sweet zoom that puts some Frenchie lovin on it.

The Angies don't work with the Motion Mount because of the deep flange. Fuck it - they're a 2.8 lens that only gets better a couple stops up. If you need wide open . . . use a Prime!

Will test my 8R Ultra Prime when it comes home manana.

EDIT: less quick and dirty test here:

Anyone shooting the Leica-M's shorter than 50 on the Dragon? I remember hearing that the lens port had more clearance to accommodate this. Anything on that? Wondering how that 21/1.4 performs on Dragon.

Curious myself, about Leica M's and other rangefinder glass as well.

i'm glad to hear you say this, Josh. I've been seriously considering the DP zooms for a while, but the Motion Mount thing has me somewhat scared off. I don't have MM at this point anyway (although I plan to get one in the future), and the DP's still seem like one of the best things going for the $$ and ease of use. If you get a chance, would you mind posting some Dragon/DP images?
