  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Ronin-MX

Adam I have the plate and yes makes it easier ... you also need the tilt extension arms for my weapon to even fit into the cage.....

Still scratching my head as to why DJI used a red in almost every picture promoting this tool and it does not fit without modifications.

even with the cinemilled stuff ( the only real way to get a solid balance) the 10lb payload limits you tremendously.

my opinion is the FS7 will not fit... I have flown the FS7 on the full size ronin and needed extensions, the MX is much smaller. Basically whatever you can mount on a Ronin M will work on the MX nothing more

I wonder what exact "improvement" is between MX and M?

Being able to power camera is the difference.

I do power my camera from the Distribution plate currently on M. I've a total of 4 batteries now on M, At the end I am sure I will get the same run time sharing 4 batteries with the gimbal VS having 1 for dedicated for gimbal and 3 dedicated for the camera

Ya you can power the camera with M just fine. I think the difference is slightly stronger motors, 360 degree rotation for dutch, extra battery mount, some GPS G force brain - what ever that matters for on the ground, and probably something I'm missing. But realistically I don't think anyone really knows how it performs as there isn't enough of them out there yet. Marcel is doing some tests right now, I'm sure he'll post his findings if he gets his to work properly, and I'll let you know if mine ever even shows up.

Hey guys,

Apologies if this is a stupid question. What exactly do these pieces do? their purpose is unclear to me:
http://store.dji.com/product/ronin-m...ry-kit-for-red

I'm looking to use the Ronin MX with my raven and a wide, still lens mostly (rokinon, nikkor etc...). With no battery and power coming from the v-lock on the back of the Tilta Armour man.

Do people think this setup should work with the Ronin MX? Was hoping the stripped back setup might overcome some of the issues mentioned above.

Mine just arrived. I will be testing it today.

Tests I'm performing:

1. I want to see how well it stacks up against my MōVI M10

2. I want to see if it can handle a full 10 LBS, with no issues.

3. I want to see if it will fly perfectly smooth with no micro vibrations and no horizon drift.

4. I want to see If removing the V mount from the back of the camera and powering it from the DJI batteries it the better way to go.

5. I want to see if there is any synthetic or robotic looking movements during pans and tilts. Some gimbals struggle with this, especially with pans. The MōVI hs perfected this problem with years of software improvements to make pans and tilts look completely natural.

I will report back my findings.

DJI customer service is not the best. For that reason, If you're shooting an important project, you might seriously consider renting or buying a back up unit in case the main one breaks down. I seriously doubt DJI could, or would, get you another gimbal overnighted to you in an emergency.

If there are any problems with this gimbal, I will post them here.

If they are software issues, I am optimistic that they will get them fixed in future firmware updates.

I'll let you all know my findings.

Yes. That would be great. Thanks Carey.

I've heard you need the red accessory kit mentioned above in order to get the Red to even fit on the MX. Looking forward to your findings.

Anyone has good solution/ tips for casing? It doesn't come with the case like Ronin did.

Also, how the hell can we put Alexa Mini on this? Has anyone tried? I don't think there is enough physical space.

Cary, Im mostly hearing that the MX can't handle the weight of cinema/heavier lenses. Could you confirm this as well when you get a chance?

Yes. I need to order the extra Red parts that I didn't know about in order to mount my cam.

I'm certain it will fly a Red-W

I plan to run power off of the Ronin Battery with their LEMO to D-Tap cable. I'll then be using my I/O Module to send an HD-SDI feed out via a Teradek Bolt out to 4 monitors. I'll attach my 4.7 Red Touch to the handlebar using Red's LEMO adapter A and B, along with Freefly's Hyper-thin Red Touch cable, and shoot with still glass using FOOL CONTROL for focus and control. Done.

Looking forward to your test Carey.

do you still need the $169 thumb controller?

anyone using the SRW-80? If so any lag?

Balance is possible but you need the cinemilled system and the plate has to be adapted. a couple of notes:

The cinemilled plate should get a redesign to work in camera base inverted mode. As you can see in photo of the bottom of the plate I had to file it down.

If a follow focus is to be used (or a heavier lens) I think you will need 3 of the large counterweights. I was flying with just 2

The DJI Ronin SRW-60G Module is currently not working correctly. It drops the video signal regularly. I will be looking into this today as I did not have time to mess with it yesterday. A HDMI cable can be used instead.

Adam, thanks for the info and video. It looks like your a little ahead of us. Do you have the DJI start stop for the Red working? We are also having problems with the SRW. so you also need the cinemilled plate to fly a Red on the MX? It looks like to fly a Red on the MX M600 combo it's going to cost about $11k before batteries. Here is a list of items that it looks like are needed to fly the Red professionally on the M600, please add anything that's also required.

Matrice 600 + Ronin-MX $6000
Ronin-MX - Remote Start/Stop $150
Ronin-MX - RSS Control Cable for RED $70
SRW-60G $249
Ronin & Ronin-M - RED Power Cable $100
Ronin & Ronin-M - Battery Power Distributor $150
Lightbridge 2 Ground Unit $800
Ronin-MX - Accessory Kit for RED $45
Ronin-MX - HDMI to Micro HDMI Cable for SRW-60G $15
A3 Upgrade Kit $918
Follow Focus Mount (15mm) (Ronin/Ronin-M) $70
Ronin-M - Vertical Adjustment Arm Extension Kit (30mm) $18
DJI Focus $2000
MX Battery $90 x 4
Ronin Battery $160 x 4
Matrice 600 - TB47S Intelligent Flight Battery (6PCS) $800 x 10

I'll second that you absolutely have to have the extended arms for upright Red usage. I tried the inverted base mounting before I had the extended arms and it just seemed like a lot of trouble to work around just needing another inch of arm length. And couldn't ever get it perfectly balanced when inverted. And it is strange that it's being marketed so heavily for use with the Red when out of the box it's pretty much impossible to use with the Red.

I'm using the cinemilled extended arms (didn't know about the DJI ones - seems like that ought to just come in the box). Now that I have them and realize you only need about an extra inch, the DJI ones seem like a little bit more elegant of a solution. A little strange that the stock arms weren't just a little bit longer.

Notably, I'm not using the cinemilled plate. Just the stock DJI plate, and I've been able to get it balanced.

I haven't yet figured out the importance/use of the top bar. I guess it'd make sense as a safety feature when inverted, but how does it help/impact balance? Seems like you'd want to leave unnecessary weight off. Am I missing something?

Also, I'm working with a stripped down Epic Dragon (with full size redmag and switchblade), powered through the power distributor plate with a DJI battery and regular lightweight Rokinon Cine DS lenses. Not sure how you'd get true cinema glass running on it. Feels like my setup is right at the upper limit of what it can handle.

In retrospect, I would have probably just gone with the original Ronin as it works out of the box and has all the accessories you need. Been a lot of hoops to jump through to get the Red/Ronin-MX combo functioning. Still waiting on a ready-made case solution.

I believe that the top bar was implemented for when using on the Matrice for aerials or where you'll be fighting some extra force (most notably any situation in which you're riding in a vehicle while shooting). I think it helps with extra stability within the frame and helps distribute the momentum forces of the camera. Though this is just a laymans explanation I've seen in a few places.

Thats a long shopping list. Nice to have all that (and I have most of it) but you can certainly fly with less kit

To balance a RED I feel like you need to have a nice counterbalance system. I personally have only tired the cinemilled one and it works good, so I would add that to your list.

The SRW-60 is certainly not working right at the moment but I am sure DJI will send out a new firmware to resolve that. For now I am just going to use a thin / flexible HDMI cable. If you are in single operator mode that should work fine.
