  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Ronin-MX

Got my MX too guys. It's not good, it's actually kind of crap. I'm returning it for a tilta gravity. Marcel warned me but I heard from some people who were making it work. So I thought I'd try it and not cancel my preorder. Well wrong move. Tilta here we come.

Their customer service is the worst I've ever seen. I'm surprised that Red would align themselves with a company with such poor customer service. FreeFly's customer service is much more like Red's than DJI's. Red is up there with Apple, and FreeFly is right up there too.

New firmware updates for it hit last week that made a big difference in the motors/auto-tune functions. Much faster and more accurate calibration with my upright RED setup (auto-tune didn't do any good before). Hoping they continue to improve it with firmware. Finally been able to get it up and running with good results.

My Ronin M blew up inside a pelican case, I assume it was the battery, but I have not been able to get DJI to take it back, replace it or figure anything out from my Central American outpost, and hesitate to take a charred lump back to the States with me. So...I am hesitant about the MX.

Did the Ronin blow up or did one of the batteries? Were you storing batteries in a LiPo bag when not being used? Were you doing normal LiPo battery maintenance and cycling?

I have a feeling movi may be coming out with an upgrade.... hmm clearing stock?

I don't think so. They had a flash sale on the M5 in February, but no update at NAB, or since.

Even if they do have an upgrade anytime soon, the M15 will be an amazing gimbal for years to come. It's like buying a Red.

I see people selling their Ronin MX gimbals and have heard they don't work great with Red setups. Is that true?

Ive worked with the old one on a few films and it was a task to get it going.

But not impossible just takes patience and experience.

If you own a Ronin and as well as a RED you shouldnt really be having that much trouble getting it going.

Heck Ive been testing a Helix Junior with my Scarlet for a week now and I have the balancing/setup almost down to minutes.

It is. The cage height is the first problem at least on the weapon. The camera is too tall...and doesn't fit within the top cage cross bar, which means you can't tune the motors as high, thus resulting in a limp gimbal most of the time. When I saw it a the announcement NAB party, I was baffled that they made on that only had a 10lb capacity...it's like a slightly beefed up Ronin M. If you're going towards a Ronin, the full size is where you need to be. You could pick up a used one for darn cheap.

I have one with my Raven and I think it works great other than the fact that I need to get a right angle Lemo that points down for the D-Tap. As long as you have the extension legs it only takes a few minutes to balance. I mainly run it with the 11-16 Tokina Cinema lens and that clears the forward battery.

Thanks man, that's the answer I was looking for :)

Hope you're well. Those group buys are kicking butt!
