  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Ronin-MX

Does anyone know what case to get for the MX? It does not fit into the Ronin M case and none of the custom cases are out yet. Looking at any DIY solution or which Pelican to get for it.

Thanks for the help!!
HPRC 2700E Hard Case is perfect size. Also got a drawing I made for custom insert foam I intended to order but later abandoned. I ended up slicing and dicing the foam that shipped with the Ronin-MX into the HPRC. Not the best of solutions but holds everything in place perfectly (for now) as I have notice the foam caving in gradually but I am not just interested in spending more money on the MX as it did not satisfy me and I was getting another gimbal

Hello

I just got my Ronin MX and obviously i need to buy the accessory kit for red for it to work properly. However, im wondering about the battery solution. I suppose i need to buy the power distributor to power my camera? how about the p-tap connection under the baseplate? is it connected to the gimbal battery and can i power my camera with it?

The Ronin MX mounts 2 batteries, one on the top for the ronin himself and the other on the back for the camera.
Check here under the POWER section: http://www.dji.com/ronin-mx

Please let us know how it works!

Yes i know. But the battery place on the back of the gimbal is "empty", meaning you need the power distributor to actually connect the camera to the battery. Therefore im wondering if the p-tap connection that is directly under the baseplate where the camera is mounted, is connected to the main battery on the top and if it can handle a red camera and the gimbal by itself at the same time?

Oh sorry I assumed you had the power distributor. I don't have the MX so I'm just reading the manuals.

From the manual of the power distributor they say this:
"If using the 423496-1580mAh-14.4V Intelligent Battery, a motor stall may cause your external equipment to unexpectedly shut down from the sudden voltage drop"
So it must be the same if you plug it to the top socket.
http://dl.djicdn.com/downloads/roni...ry_Power_Distributor_Quick_Start_Guide_en.pdf

Other then that I was reading this in the FAQ:
The runtime varies depending on the camera. When used with a RED Raven recording 4K video, the 4S 4350mAh Ronin battery lasts for about 60 minutes.

The MX battery is 1580mAh (about one third of the power) so even though it doesn't have any voltage drop with the RED it means that it would last 15min or so, having to power both the camera and the ronin.

Thanks for the information.

I now bought the power distributor and the original ronin battery(i suppose). So this new ronin battery will only power the camera wich i assume will be no problem?

I will give an update on the result as soon as i have them

Yeah it should power the camera, it specifically say it in the description:
http://store.dji.com/product/ronin-m-battery-power-distributor

And that's the right battery, same that they claim last 60min with the Raven.

do you have to use the top plate? I am just toeing the line on my ronin m with epic w and thinking about making the switch, the top plate is a deal breaker though

I have setup the ronin MX a few times without the top plate and just clamped the top bar down on the top of the camera without screwing into it. It worked well, but my feeling is if your going to be running the camera on a car or on a multichopper your going to want to use the top plate. Currently, if I have time, I use the top plate either way, just feels more solid.

I am strictly hand holding the rig, 100% of the time, I am just on the line with the ronin m, have a shoot this weekend, fingers crossed

See this from an earlier post. Hope its still usefull
No, they are not including the rear plate or the battery. Its stated in the faq section. I'd say the following will be a working package:
3 x (or 2)Ronin - Intelligent Battery (4350mAh) to power your camera
2 x (or 1) Ronin - 57W Battery Chargers for charging the batteries above, the charger that ships with Ronin can only charge the battery that powers the Ronin
2 (or 1) x Ronin - Red power cable
Ronin battery power distributor

So, depending on how frequent your gimbal use is will determine the final number of these extra accessories you need. I once read somewhere the 4350mah battery powers Dragon for about 60mins and takes about 90mins for full charge, so I say you budget for 3 of those. All these should run you north of $800 or more

With the exception of the DJI Ronin-Red power cable which is too stiff and also the right angle lemo port bumps the R-MX arms if you using any module except Jetpack module to power the camera. Find a more flexible Lemo PTap power cable. I use this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V6NOY02/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1, not the best of quality when it comes to durability but does work, I used 3 in last 10 months in my rental biz. You might order 2 so you always have an extra.
Also as a side note the battery does do power the camera for 50-60mins but budget 45mins per battery when stocking up. I 've been this using this setup from last Nov on R-M and now also on R-MX. Hope this info helps

Today tried to balance my Scarlet-w (with v-lock expander module, without battery) with Canon cine lens (24mm).
I had the Vertical Adjustment Arm Extension Kit (30mm) too. Weight was less then 8lbs and I could balance the camera but the back of the camera touched the arch of the ronin so it made the gimbal unusable.

Can somebody that tested or own the Ronin MX tell me if it works with the Scarlet-w (with v-lock expander) and cine lens?
In this case can you tell me what I need to buy beside the Ronin MX? Line DJI counterweights etc?

I'm getting crazy. Thanks a lot!

Uggggh sell the MX get the Gravity - handles anything you throw on it! lol

You're right about the tilta but I love the ring grip and the thumb controller, ronin mx is also smaller to fold and cheaper...

I used the regular ronin a lot and it was perfect if it wasn't like a cofan to carry around.

Been using it with Raven/MG and Rokinon 24mm. Sometimes with v-lock expander, sometimes with base expander.

So I've read through the thread, what is the general consesus of he ronin-mx with the dsmc2 cameras? is it worth it? It's in my price range and I would love for it to work out. my setup would basically consist of

Scarlet-w
Sigma 18-35mm art
4.7" touch monitor somewhere
If possible a second 7" light weight monitor for focus reasons(not a necessity)
Misfit atom with an ND filter

That setup should work well on the RoninMX. I recently did a very similar build, with a heavier lens. One question... If you're using the Sigma lens, why not use screw on filters to save weight?

Here is what I recently built on the RoninMX:

RED Weapon
HDMI Jetpack
Zeiss CP.2 35mm(PL mount)
Misfit Atom with .6 ND

Ku900Vb

I had to use the counter balance weight kit from DJI to make it all balance as the CP.2 is a bit heavier than the Sigma you're looking to use.

I beg to differ... ;o)

And those are just from the "early" days with DSMC1. Wait till you see what we have been up to with DSMC2... ;o)

I could come up with ton of excuses - but the simple answer is "life". Those who know me are aware that we have been expanding into our new 1500 sqm facility in another prefecture where we have been allocated 5 sqkm of "R&D" airspace. All this while kicking off two major multi-million USD projects. Words like "busy" and "tired" has lost their meaning long time ago. We are using the MX like crazy - but majority of these projects are yet to be released, and until then I am not allowed to share the actual footage. As things calm down (soon, I promise) - we will shoot some spec stuff jut to show off what the MX is capable in the right hands. One of the main benefits of our recent expansion is that we now have a lot more staff to take a lot of the weight off of my shoulders - giving me progressively more time to go through the TB's of various footage and put something together for you guys. All I can do for now is to ask for you patience...

No matter how many times I balance the camera, it's fine when the gimbal is off, everything is perfectly balanced but when you turn on the gimbal it balances but it is having a hard time tilting down or up, it can't recover as if the weight is too much and needs to be manually restored to a balanced position. The total weight is 6.6 lbs with the camera and lens so it's unclear why it's having a problem with this weight. I have restored the gimbal to default settings then applied RED settings in the DJI app, still same issue.

I have the same camera and lens setup as shown in these photos and I am having a hard time making things work properly with the Ronin MX. The gimbal acts as if the weight is too much. Can you share your exact DJI app settings? It may be helpful for those who are having trouble balancing a RED camera on the Ronin MX.
