DJI RONIN - independent review and in-depth test

Anyone got a bead on extra batteries yet?

Rule of production: Backup!

Peter - I just put an Anton Bauer directly on the back of my Scarlet. Can I not continue to do this with the camera on the Ronin?

Mine comes tomorrow. Woo hoo!
Mine comes tomorrow too... but .. did you buy one necessary tool for your Ronin ? :hurray:

This will greatly depend on how big your battery is, how big is the mount at the back of your camera and what lens configuration and any other accessories you will need to attach to your camera.
The physical size of the Ronin limits what kind of configurations you can mount.
Basically with the standard arms you have 140 mm from the center of gravity of your camera setup to the back of the Ronin cradle.
You can test your setup by putting your (configured) camera on a pencil or some other tubular object to find the center of balance - then measure how much from there to the rear of the camera.
It needs to be 140 mm or less to even just fit - but you will still be limited in tilt angles. The more space you have at the rear - the more freedom you will have for tilt.
The idea is that your camera should be able to tilt down 90˚ and tilt up 45˚ without hitting the rear cradle.
But I have seen situations where +/- 30˚ is enough clearance for most situations - you just need to adjust your end-points and follow mode settings accordingly...

140mm is 5.5 inches, which is disappointingly short. Perhaps, though, the weight of the Anton Bauer battery will help to move the COG backwards, and therefore the whole camera forwards (if that makes sense).

Sergei,

Any plans on how you are going to power your BMPC on the Ronin yet or are you going to run off the short internal battery? Ronin is on the way (set to arrive on tuesday) and I'm still mulling over possible power options for my BMPC. I'm thinking top mounted 15mm rods leading to a V-mount battery on the back side of the camera but this would limit access to the touch screen.

I don't have any "Plan" :smile5: I just connect D-tap cable I've got from E-bay directly into Blackmagic and it's work fine!

What I'm PLANING to do, is to cut this cable and connect it to "right angled" connector to camera.. gonna do it right now :smile5:

Nice. Glad to hear that the D-tap does the job. Already have that cable. I'll probably follow suit with modifying it toa right angle plug. Thanks for the info and pics.

You are welcome! Here how I make this cable short and angled:

I hope someone ( from China, I presume :w00t: ) gonna produce this cable with exact size( 9" ) and right-angled connection ..

Some questions if any one is able to help.

On Sergi's photo above in this thread there is a small multi pin connector visible. Its obviously a weak point. ingress for damp water fragile etc.

Any one got any solutions for it ?

Our plan may be is to encapsulate it with Hardman polyurethane which we hope will make it less vulnerable.

All thoughts welcome on this.

Also Does DJi make more of the top tube accessory mounts as an option or any one know where we cam purchase clamps that are the correct size.

We aim to use Red Dragon on the rig and have flexible LCD cable to top arm and also flexible power in. The camera battery is intended to be mounted on operator belt but it may be we can access the onboard Ronin battery or strap another LiPo to the Ronin battery for camera power. Any one got any solutions for this please ?

thanks,

I think this "small multi pin connector" is connector to HURO SENSOR, so I would not to touch it without asking DJI technician ... I power my Blackmagic because it's take very little for support internal camera battery, but for RED cameras Ronin battery DO NOT produce enough power, so just forget about it ... I was trying to place my Ronin on Steadicam Arm today:

Ronin_033.jpg

Ronin_034.jpg

..but I don't like it ... maybe it's OK if you just stay and shoot, but when I go - my own hands, without this steadicam Arms support produce BETTER result...
maybe because my Arm should be MUCH BETTER quality :w00t: ... ...and connected

to Ronin in Upright Mode in the Central Point in the horizontal bar, like this -

IMG_1242.jpg

...I just trying to torn camera upside down:

Ronin_035.jpg

Ronin_036.jpg

So when I turn Ronin in Upright Mode - camera in proper position:

Ronin_037.jpg

Much better... but still not good enough because my Steadi-Arm definitely very poor quality ...heavy and produce more PAIN in my back :emote_headwall:...than steady shoot .. :nonod:

I would prefer just to hold Ronin on my hand !!!

Has anyone tried flying the Ronin yet?

Initial thoughts, worth it, not worth it?

Has anyone mounted it to anything but the handlebars so far?

Here is my first real test of Ronin:

It's NOT a "film", just a test.. even I would prefer to shoot it on 11mm with much wider lens - Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 instead as I did it with Sigma 18-35mmF1.8 ..

So I would say - RONIN is SO GOOD !!! :emote_happyhappy: Look: all what I have now - it's basic without any FINE TUNING and shoot it with wrong lens,
without joystick for direct paining and tilting... without external MONITOR on top bar ( because I don't have SDI-monitor yet ) ... and without any support, on my hands only...
I still got much better result then with any steadicam I use .. so ? :001_tongue:

Don't know, but I like Ronin, even it's 4kg + camera+lens+ ..etc...

thanks,

I have the same concern Dave. To me it seems like a major design flaw. Four exposed wires, and an open multi-pin connector is an invitation for disaster -- either physical damage or moisture penetration. I would like to see Ronin come up with a replacement connector ASAP.

At first I thought it might just be my rig, but I've seen it several times in other Ronin photos.

DJI, do you have a fix planned for this?

M

I also have a question for fellow Ronin owners:

Do your handle grips feel loose even though they are tightened all the way? Mine have play in them and it feels kinda cheesy… not a solid, quality feel. But my biggest concern is whether that movement would be translated to the rig. My rig also came covered in a very fine red dust from the red foam in the case. Anyone else have that situation?
