  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI RONIN - independent review and in-depth test

Damn it would be nice to have a working remote focus for Canon internal motors now.

You need the ¼-20 bolt and thin LCD cable around 30" in length (like the 36" Slackline's option)...

Having said that - any physical connection between the handles and the gimbal will affect both the balance (the motors will have to compensate for the constantly changing force as the cable moves during the shot) and the freedom of movement - especially since the Ronin can do both the up-side-down and briefcase modes as well...

So I recommend going wireless - this is my setup as well.
The additional benefit of not having physical connection to the gimbal is that you can just release the QR bracket and mount it on another platform without having to reconfigure anything...

Thank you Peter :)

Hi Peter,

Any further progress regarding the testing of the Ronin? I am particularly interested in your full sized helicopter test.

Bruce

Bruce, my camera is out on long rental ATM - but I am using this time to work on solutions to mount the Ronin via its quick-release system to various support platforms, so as soon as my camera is back I can start testing those. I am also working on the power solution that addresses couple of other features...

Having said that - the full-size heli test is being scheduled for next week and I will be renting a Dragon for that...

Cheers

Hi folks!

I am glad to hear some of you have started to receive your Ronins! This is great! Please share your experiences and do not hesitate to ask any questions or provide any feedback.
Quick heads-up on the accompanied iOS application - please make sure to download the one linked on DJI's website...:

(the barcode)

The DJI Assistant on the Apple store is still waiting approval from Apple to include this latest version that supports the Ronin. This is just temporary and as soon as Apple approves the update - you can just search the AppStore for the app.
But in the meantime if you can not connect to the Ronin with your phone (and your BluTooth is ON) - just make sure you have downloaded the right application...

Cheers

Hey Peter. Have you once mentioned someting about a power solution you are developing for the Ronin/RED system? Can you tell us more about that?
What are the possibilities for powering the camera for now?
- REDVOLT
- V-Lock adapter kit
- V-Mount battery belt (any good for limited gimbal work??)

Cheers

Hi JD!

What I am working on is little more complex as it addresses not only the power solution, but also few other important features of the gimbal - and will ultimately improve the results we are getting even further.
I am currently testing the v1 prototype and there is still some work ahead before I can post anything...

In the meantime you have two options (without the longer arms):

1. Use REDVOLT in the SIDE HANDLE. As I have mentioned before this is not the best way as the REDVOLT only lasts about 20~25 min and changing it requires unlocking the horizontal side-to-side axis to make the space for the SIDE HANDLE's door to open. So the battery change takes about 2 minutes.

2. Use the custom side V-Lock mount from FREEFLY (http://store.freeflysystems.com/collections/movi-accessory/products/epic-vlock-adapter-kit) in combination with the compact IDX E-7s batteries (http://idxtek.com/products/e-7s/). This will give you 45+ min and takes only seconds to change the battery...

Once the longer arms are available for purchase as accessory - you will be also bale to use some of the rear-mounted V-Lock and REDVOLT-XL solutions.
Using belt clip is not ideal for the same reason I recommend not to use physical LCD cable and use wireless instead. Any cables connected to the gimbal (no matter how thin) will make the gimbal work harder and potentially result in less then perfect footage.
If you do want to use physical cable - please make sure they are as thin as possible (like the Slackline's LCD cable) - but this is difficult with power cable, as it needs to be certain thickness to carry the required current.
Someone would have to make a custom belt-clip with some sort of braided cable...

Hope this helps...

Cheers

Peter

Sounds interesting, looking forward to your development!

Thanks for the details. I was aware of these two options, just hoped there were some more :) Might go with the Freefly adapter kit..

Cheers!

Fascinating idea devin - I bet this will make a killer remote head.
And the ability to do jib to handheld handoffs makes it a great multi-purpose solution. We are excited to get it out in the field. But running off battery for dedicated jib work isn't as ideal, especially when covering really lengthy live events.

Hey Everyone,
The Ronin has been Designed for heavy setups as has been repeatedly pointed out in this thread; I would love to know what would be the minimum Weight required for its motors to function at their intended performance level since its said light weight camera are not preferable with the Ronin with respect to its capabilities. I apologise if this has been asked and answered and also apologise if its a foolish question as i am new to this technology and looking everywhere to learn more.

My 1st post on reduser by the way.lol

Hey Sabyasachi. There are Loads of Knowledgeable folks on here that seem to answer my thoughts even before they transform into questions..lol; but just not this time i guess..

Any tests done with heavier lenses? I haven't found much information on it, but I was interested in how well the Ronin handled an Epic with a RED 17-50 for example. Thanks for doing this review by the way, I'm currently waiting to purchase a Ronin myself and between this thread and related Ronin threads, I'm definitely sold on getting one.
