  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI RONIN - independent review and in-depth test

Peter, I did not mean for it to sound like an attack believe me. It's just that there are a lot of people looking into buying a gimbal and they do not have as much experience as you do so when they see a statement of dead weight and the name Letus attached to it, they may automatically assume that the Ronin (which you are testing) is lighter due to that statement. Thank you for explaining your point of view and now others and read up on your reasons for making that statement.

No worries Sinh - we all need to be careful how we put forth our words on a Internet forum(s) - things can get easily misunderstood...

:cheers2: Peter

Thanks Peter! As far as using the 5" touch I found these two links which are also on other places on this forum. I plan on buying one of them, but not really sure if I need the extra length. I guess your tests will reveal what kind of resistance these cables will be contributing to the rig.

Are there any other options out there that you know of?

Hi Justin! I am indeed following closely all these thin cable options and not just for the LCD.
I will add to the list a comparison of various cable options - including RED's own - and see how the rig copes with them...

Thank you so very much for doing this, Peter.

Wow, this is what makes Reduser such a great community.

Having someone like Peter do such a thorough review is great for us folks who are interested in these systems.

Thanks Peter.

Matt - always glad to be able to help... ;o)

PS: from the tracking it looks like the customs will clear the Ronin tomorrow - so if you guys have any other questions or requests to add to the list in post no.3, please do so...

Look what the cat dragged in...!

First impressions? Very good...

The case - while it is not a PELICAN - it is of very nice quality and has the same solid feel just like PELI, yet it seems quite a bit lighter then the equivalent size PELI.
It has no fewer then 7! latches and a nice wheels, carry-handles on both the top and the side, as well as a large roll-handle that extends from the back of the case

Once you open it - the RONIN is organised in two separate trays - upper and lower...:

Unfortunately I am off to a very important meeting (very much related to the development of the accessories for the RONIN), so the first assembly and setup will have to wait till tonight...

PS: Post no.2 updated with the above pictures...

Actually the rig is a lot lighter then I was expecting it to be. I will post some numbers soon - only just got back home...
Realllllly looking forward to learning Ronin's weight :)

looking forward to this review, even though my actual money is on Letus - as I believe the gimbal revolution is still in early innings and it will be an interesting horse race. It will be interesting to see what kind of enhancements you consider, Peter....

Thank you for doing this! So looking forward to what you share. ESPECIALLY THE WEIGHT! Seems like so many of us are dying to find out what it weighs but no one has been able to provide any info here. I would love to see weights of the rig with and without the handles (for when it is attached to a multirotor unit), as well as any other practical configurations...

Thank you!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand at last - here is some weight info...

Please keep in mind that this is not the final shipping unit and these my change - if every slightly so, so please treat these as a reference for now...:

Base 3-axis gimbal - 3040 g

Ronin_weight_gimbal.jpg

Handles - 785 g

Ronin_weight_handles.jpg

Battery - 350 g

Ronin_weight_battery.jpg

Full rig with the three above items - 4175 g

So if you want to mount the gimbal to a multi-rotor or another platform (like steadicam - more about this later) without the handles - you are looking at 3390 g

Full rig = 4175 grams or 9.2 lbs if anyone was wondering. Thanks for the info.

Just to clarify - that is for hand-held config including the arms and the battery - only add the camera + camera accessories.
Also please keep in mind that these might change a tiny bit for the final shipping product - hopefully in our favour... ;o)

PS: For all the "lightweight" info about the Helix - I am yet to find an actual weight spec on it. Just wanted to know how much lighter it is when compared with the Ronin
