  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SEXY OLED Grading Monitor

Thanks for the update, Mitch. That is awesome news about the flicker fix. If Sony fixes it so I can run flicker-free at 24fps, I'm buying both a 25 and a 17.... Maybe. Will have to see them first. ;)

I saw one running at the local F65 demo earlier in the week here in Toronto. The flicker made it un-watchable. Hard to comment on the rest without a good known reference to go with it - all I could see what the flicker.

Perhaps a Red 4K OLED display in 2012 could make things right?

When you turn one of these monitors on the only way to tell its on is with the start up screen and the green power light after... the blacks are black.

The BVM series does not flicker, but you pay for it. The BVM has a lot more features than the PVM. I own a PVM 17" and I have been on set and worked with a 24.5" BVM. They are going to be the new standard for reference. Absolutely incredible. But the flicker on the PVM @ 24 frames is bad, however if you feed it non 24 frame material it doesn't flicker.

I am interested to see how the firmware update fixes the issue. They say it smears the video a bit, but no more than a LCD so we shall see I guess

Curtis, you'd think Sony, at the launch of the F65 here in Toronto could have got the BVM so we wouldn't see flicker.... I didn't take a picture of the monitors to see what version they were, but the flicker on them was so objectionable. No reason a monitor should flicker at any frame rate especially given how long Sony have been making 24p cameras and broadcast monitors.

I totally agree Graeme, I don't understand why they released monitors that flicker at 24 either. I have been told its because they were built like they built the old CRT reference monitors and they flickered at 24. So they build a board that eliminated the flicker but cost $5k so thats why its in the BVM series and not the PVM.

No idea of why they would have done a demo with the F65 and a PVM monitor is beyond me. If you are trying to showcase a camera show it the best you can right?

I have worked on a TV show shooting on F35s and the DP uses a BVM as his monitor and its absolutely stunning no flicker.

But the flicker on the PVM is definitely not acceptable. I used it on a Phantom job recently and that causes all kinds of confusion since you are worried about flicker from lights on the Phantom to begin with. So I hope this firmware update eliminates the problem.

The other solution is to use a up/down/cross converter to switch the signal to 60i. I haven't tried this, but have heard this eliminates the flicker issue.

Also Graeme, I heard someone mention there is possibly going to be a firmware update for the Epic to send out something other than 24 to help with this issue. Is that true?

You tell me Curtis - it was a shoddy demonstration for sure, and some of the poorest camera demo footage I've ever seen coupled with a 1.5hr powerpoint that terminally boring. Duno on firmware, but funny that RED would be asked to fix a Sony monitor issue though :-)

I remember seeing you at NAB this year, did you get a chance to goto the Sony booth and see the F65 demo footage there? I thought it was pretty solid stuff. Did they show something different at the recent demo you attended?

Yeh, the NAB demo was pretty decent. But the presenter said he didn't like that demo so he wasn't showing it.

Mitch,

Popped in the New York Offices, back in the summer, the new diggs look nice. Will Abel be setting up a Post Production room to demo some of the gear such as the aforementioned monitor?

We already have! Not a separate room but an area in the showroom. Slightly segregated so one can focus on what one is looking at, but still a part of all the nice toys. Construction is underway on the expansion of the Burbank facility as well.

Ressurecting this tread to let people know that we have tested a Sony PVM OLED monitor with the updated firmware to remove the flicker issue. It works quite well, and is in fact an option which can be switched on/off as an assignable button control. This is akin to the motion smoothing on/off control in the RED or ALEXA EVFs. This firmware upgrade will be free but because the monitor was not constructed to be user-upgradeable, it will have to go to a Sony facility for the upgrade. It is just a re-flashing of a chip so should be a fairly quick turnaround. Details will come soon from Sony as to when & how this upgrade will become available.

Any ideas where to rent one cheaply to test? The only option around here is VER and they're only carrying the BVM -- at $600/day

went to a local sony dealer last week and feed the pvm2541 oled with epic 24fps playback - i connected the camera via HD-SDI to the monitor - there might have been flicker, but on a very very low level - it is hard to tell, when you go there to test for flicker issues, you suddenly see it everywhere ;-)

is this a correct setup or should i feed a live signal from the epic or redcine-x?
best wishes,
martin

That is great Mitch... I bought one of the little Sony OLEDs and loved it on a couple of phantom jobs... THEN i used it on a Epic job and decided to put it on the shelf as it is unusebale.

2 questions

Is the upgade for the PVM 7.4inch as well?

Does the upgrade cause any noticable delay?

thanks for updating us

There may be an issue with 24fps and flickering that looks like it will soon be fixed but don't lose sight that the PVM Sony OLED is amazing good value and produces an image which is quite amazing. I own a panasonic 1760 and the Sony is a big step forward. This is a total bummer as I have to now replace my monitor. Anyone want to but a 1760?

When out and bought the 17" OLED PVM. Put it up against the Panssonic monitors and really a step ahead and a reasonable price at $4,000. Flicker at 50 hz is a small issue but just setting the Epic to 60 hz and the flicker diminished considerably. Firmware update in March should finish off the issue.

If you price out a Panny vt 25 or vt 30 + i1display pro + Lightspace you are getting something extremely close to a perfect rec709 (likely so close the naked eye could not see a difference) at 50 inches for way less than an OLED. That has been our choice.

For on-desk monitoring, a Flanders seems a good deal.

For on-set with Red you don't need perfect color since it's RAW, just reasonably correct gamma (to see potential noise) and good 1080p 1:1 and 720p scaling (to see focus and framing). Lost of cheap solutions for this in any size desired.

The 7.4" uses different control firmware, so any upgrades for that would be a separate task.

No delay added to signal.
