Or XBox Live Marketplace. Microsoft is the only company delivering HD-On Demand to a set-top box that I know of without a cable subscription.

iTV is a joke. iTunes' HD selection is pathetic and their reward for close RED collaboration (if you can call codec support close collaboration) is an increase in sales. Apple was doing just fine financially last I checked--if they want to make a show and make it iTunes exclusive let'em do it, but I dont' see why someone should be helping Apple make money.

I'm with ya Skip, except I don't see iTunes being the proper outlet. iTunes distribution for sure, but it needs to have some other major outlet, preferably a major network that can pump out HD to those capable of receiving it.

So now that we agree on that, I'm in and will bring my RED when I get it. You go round up the budget and that big name talent. Sound fair? So just have your people call my people once you get your end of the assignment done. Once I know who we have on-board, I'll build the concept and write the scripts to fit our talent. It's gonna be big. :clown2:

If only it were all so easy. Hahaha. Development hell.

Is it me, or did Stewart just ask for a 20% discount. He must be kidding, but I can't tell.
Hi Skip,
Yes he did, Stewart did ask Jim for a 20% discount, he's probably Chinese
being from HK. I think it's reasonable, the whole world asks the Chinese for
an 80% discount, including Jim. So I think a 20% discount for a late Red is
reasonable and Stewart should get it for having the balls to ask for it IMHO.
Lets start the 20% discount for Stewart thread.
Cheers Mezmo

Hi Skip,
Just about everything on the Planet these days is produced third world in
Asia for a fraction of first world prices. Including Red components. This is
what I mean by an 80% discount from China, Hong Kong included.
It's also a very Asian thing to do, ask for a discount when someone cannot
deliver goods on time, and most of the time it's given. and therefore not
unreasonable in Stewart's case to request his 20%.
Jim would certainly be looking for some financial compensation if components were late to deliver from his Singapore supplier. This time
the roles are reversed. And Stewart in his unique way has pointed this out.
He's got guts, and that alone deserves a 20% discount.
Have a nice day. Mezmo

all right mezmo. VERY good explanation. makes a lot of sense for sure.

the only part i don't agree with is the 80% discount thing. that is just the way the world economy works. it's not like the chinese manufacturers would even hope of getting 'american' prices for their products. they have intentionally positioned themselves as one of the world's 'factories', and priced their products in order to compete on the world stage.

but your other points i wholeheartedly agree with.

I bet he would. Because he surely made a contract with fixed delivery dates.

This time the roles are reversed. And Stewart in his unique way has pointed this out.

Stewart has no contract with RED which guarantees him a certain delivery date. On the contrary. Read Jim's footer: "Everything in life changes... including our camera specs and delivery dates..."

Hi Big L,
No contract needed, Stewart's appealing to Jim's generous and better nature.
He may not be sucessfull here.
A better command of English may have helped.
Mezmo.

Well mezmo, the one thing you (and Stewart) have to remember is that Jim isn't even really late, as they have ALWAYS said that the delivery dates were estimates.

If Jim's Chinese suppliers had of said 'we expect to have your daughterboards to you by July 8th, but remember, this is subject to change' I doubt Jim would be asking them for a discount. You have to admit that there is a pretty big difference here.

One of the oldest rules around is, "It never hurts to ask!".

I didn't say he's not allowed to ask. But he won't get the discount.

Jim gives us much more now than he ever promised to give. That's worth way more than 20%.

Hi BigL,
Yes Jim has given heaps, problem is for a lot Res holders most of
it has not as yet been delivered . I think Stewart has this unique
moment in time to ask for his discount and he's doing it, pleading
his own special case. Seeing as though you speak for Jim maybe you could
have a word on Stewart's behalf.

Hehehe. I'll see what I can do :gun: (but only if I also get the discount )

Hi Skip,
Yes, good point there with the suppliers, thought you'd get that.
On the other, I know I speak for Stewart (he's possibly asleep at the
moment in HK) as a proxy but I imagine he's aware of the "everything in
life changes" and "delivery dates are estimates" stuff and not to forget "Spec's will change at the drop of a hat", stuff but Stewart's just out there
wingin it with his 20% discount idea and you know what, I wish him the best of luck.
I've just accused the Big L of speaking on Jim's behalf so I'd better do the
same regards Stewart, and shut the f**k up.
Look forward to hearing from these two great men soon on this very
important matter, Stewart's 20% discount.
I've said enough. Mezmo

At least he wasn't just asking for himself. He included all serial numbers from 101 to 1000.

Even if there is only a 1/1000 chance Jim actually said yes... the odds are better than not asking.

Reminds me of an old mantra I had in paintball. "If you have a 1/20 chance of hitting... shoot 20 times."

If anyone is brave enough to ask, I am certainly brave enough to say "Sorry... no".

From what I can tell, the nearest competing product is the newly announced Sony F35 which sells for, I am told, $350,000. If you take an 80% discount off that price, you are at $70,000. If you asked for, and got, an additional 20% discount... you would be at $56,000. And you can't take delivery of an F35 for several months. And that would only be outside of the US.

So I think the RED ONE, a few months late from an "estimated delivery date" is still a pretty good deal. Additionally, if anyone disagrees, they have the right to ask for their deposit back with interest... something I have never heard offered from any other company.

We are bending over backwards for our customers and have been completely open about our development. If this type of presentation leads to someone asking for an additional discount, we would have to reconsider the way we communicate to our customers. And that would be a bad thing.

Maybe Stewart should pay 20% more!

Oh no he di'n't

Oh no he di'n't

The Red Leader has chosen to sell this remarkable camera for, IMHO, about a tenth of its market value. Is there any way I can convince all of you to save your "bravery" for other issues than the price of the RedOne? The relative maturity of the Red camera eco-system after only 2 years is a spectacular achievement.

Based on the current rate of progress I anticipate that by this time next year RED will be the standard by which all other electronic motion image capture systems are judged - if its not, I'll eat my hat.

If no cameras had delivered at this point, I would think this might be a rational conversation, but can we please have a reality check here for a moment. We took a chance, all of us, by slapping a chunk of money down based on a concept. But in doing so, we kind of agreed to the terms that were laid out in the beginning. Have there been disapointments along the way, sure, but probably no one is as disappointed as Jim, but even still they have delivered 100 cameras, and that process seems to be benefitting those of us downstream who will get an even better camera than was originally planned.

Quite honestly, Jim could have said, hey guys this is our first camera and it's as good as we can make it at the moment so give it a whirl and Red Two will be even better. But they haven't. They continue to push themselves to deliver a great camera the first time out.

We can all walk away at any time. We can even walk away with more money then we put in originally. Jim has given us a 4K camera at an incredible price, rewarded the original reservation holders with a $2500 bonus, etc, etc. Can we please all just give this guy a break. I'm as impatient as anyone about getting my camera, but I respect the hell out of Jim and what he is doing and I am confident he isn't sitting back doing nothing. They are working their asses off.

I guess I don't get the 20% discount thing. Sorry for the rant....

Steve
