The canadian dollar rose almost .20$ against the US in the last 6 months.
Take all the time you want. Call it the war on terror discount!

Yes buts its tanking again. In the last three weeks its lost almost twelve cents. Making a $53k Red Packgage Over $6.3K more expensive than it would have been just that short time ago.

Thanks for the note Jim; Just take your time and get it right. I have no use for a camera that is not perfect. Sure I am impatient but I keep thinking by the time I get mine, all of the bugs will be ironed out :-)

Thanks for taking a great idea and turning it into such a great company!

Craig's right. I'm in Kamloops BC waiting to buy a Red package. Been reading and keeping the faith since the first days. Traditionally in Canada, we take a hit for cross line purchases. (I shoulda stayed in Tennessee!) I'm hoping next year to order mine and then have fond memories of my DVX100B, which also was a life saver, which I discovered thanks to Jarred! This is truly a wonderful community of soul mates! Thanks also to Jim for the kind words. We're all there for you and your team --Jim, but I'm sure you know it! Cal Lundgren

Sounds like scared to me. Whenever you have a conglomerate trying to put the kibosh on a small, nascent business, you have to wonder what purpose does that serve?

It's probably not fear so much as just the regular BS internal politics. I've heard of a shoe company (which shall go unnamed) demanding an agency to fire one of their designers for wearing a competitor's shoes at a meeting.

The higher you get the more money you command and a lot of insecure people feel like they have to prove they're worth every dollar.

If the Cinealta division of Sony disappeared would anyone notice? I'm thinking it's a tiny portion of Sony. Maybe there's some pride on the line... but they appear to have a great camera in the F23. Just a little spendy.

Their EX1 will keep them busy regardless.

I've worked on a few Sony pictures. I do remember them being sticklers about even using a non-VAIO laptop for a prop... so this doesn't surprise me.

But am aware of the difference between product placement and the decision to choose RED by the DP.

You can bet they aren't sitting on their hands while this RED thing happens. I'm sure an answer to RED is closer than we think. They've learned from Avid and how long they took to make anything like FCP.

However Im always with the underdogs and the "stick it to the man" group in spirit and this approach of getting the actual users involved is something Sony will never be able to do.

I heard about a soccer franchise team in England that is owned by a internet user group that makes decisions in a democracy of sorts. Think if the.....Lakers did something like that. Its a merger of fantasy leagues and the real thing! Talk about getting people involved. There would of course be a moderator and a user fee. Whatever.

... Sony is back at it trying to block RED from being used on Sony Pictures movies. It really is quite flattering.
Jim

Thats hilarious. Only serves to show your on the right track.
And, like you said, what a great marketing tool!

The delay only helps in the long run so thanks for making the camera better and better and........

Communicating to us as you go eases the tension.

Thanks

Greg

We are almost there. I know that for sure because Sony is back at it trying to block RED from being used on Sony Pictures movies. It really is quite flattering. The DPs are getting quite a kick out of it. We have to thank Sony for helping us market our program... I guess that is another story for another day.

Jim

there is a certain high-profile TV show ... shot here in NYC that is VERY interested in shooting RED.

Turns out - it is produced by DreamWorks Television and ... Sony Pictures Television.

I was told "no way ... no how".

You gotta love it.

Vive la Revolution!

I am not a RED customer as of yet, but I would like to offer my thanks to you Jim for what you have been doing. Don't let any of these minor drawbacks get to you. It has only been three months since the open beta testing began. There is no use for you to worry! It just keeps getting better. I can't believe why anyone would complain about you're update yesterday, to me it was amazingly good news.

I guess the difference for me is I am not one of the first few and haven't been on the edge of my seat for the past few months. I am just patiently waiting my turn to use the product of the work of an amazingly generous and smart development team.

Greetings to Jim Jannard --I add my voice to the chorus of those who salute you every day, and know I am not alone in waiting in humming patience for the wonder you and your team have created and are still creating. I echo the call to take whatever time you need. You have already defied time in the speed of your creation. To say nothing of its brilliance and your thrusting it into the world in a way that gives the little guy a chance to lift himself. The spirit you exemplify by your utterly unnecessary apology, only increases the triumph.

This small bouquet of words in humble gratitude.

Yours, Rod Bradley

Ode to the Red (in honor of Mr. Jim Jannard and the team)

A camera: a box that catches light: a quill
as never seen before
to etch electric papyrus
with the wondrous dance
of our world....

He carried the dream up the mountain
on the passion of perfection
against the scoffing currents
leading his merry band of geniuses
shaping stardust into a feather
to catch and hold light.

As the magical implement of these labors
enters our many hands,
may we honor his stalwart vision
and scribe with his quill of light
those stories that unfurl
wherever nobility still resides
in the human heart
as beautifully as we might...

Screw Sony man. I have an idea.

What if someone made a TV Show that was produced using REDs, and Final Cut Studio. Make it big. Either a huge reality-type show (for which I have a killer idea by the way, but it would cost a LOT to make), or an edgy series (a la Sopranos or Dexter) with BIG name talent, BIG name producers, BIG name director, etc.

Distribute it exclusively on itunes. If you want to see it, you have to get it on iTunes. It would be a good way to reward Apple for working so closely with RED. And it would be an amazing cross-promotional vehicle for both RED, and Apple, if it were big enough.

Okay, so maybe we should wait until Apple TV becomes a 'real' product to launch this exclusive series.

Anyways, the point is, screw Sony.

I don't think that is the appropriate approach. RED should just continue business as they have been and I'm sure sony will screw themselves in the end.

I'm with ya Skip, except I don't see iTunes being the proper outlet. iTunes distribution for sure, but it needs to have some other major outlet, preferably a major network that can pump out HD to those capable of receiving it.

So now that we agree on that, I'm in and will bring my RED when I get it. You go round up the budget and that big name talent. Sound fair? So just have your people call my people once you get your end of the assignment done. Once I know who we have on-board, I'll build the concept and write the scripts to fit our talent. It's gonna be big. :clown2:

Haha. Nice one Jeff. I like your style. And yeah, itunes EXCLUSIVE isn't the right outlet...yet.

But what if:

(a) itunes updates and tries to make a HUGE splash by offering itunes HD in the (relatively) near future. Then this would make perfect sense, as the tandem of RED and Apple workflow could really be promoted to show the capability of their new HD download service. I mean, this series would look absolutely stunning.

(b) Apple themselves were the main financier behind the project. Why would they do this? Again, to promote a newly launched itunes HD service. What better way to promote it than to have a marquee title that is EXCLUSIVE to them. All it takes is money. And if Apple's accountants simply let them file the expense of such a project under their marketing and advertising budget lines, they should be able to finance it to be a rather large production. They could then also recoup some of that cost (and potentially one day make a profit on the project) by the sales this program at the itunes store.

Anyways, Jeff, I look forward to working with you on this project. :whistling:

No, Jim, you should NOT have known better.

If you did, you would not done what you have done so far.

You seem to run Red with your gut.

Seems to be yielding some interesting results.

Carry on.

Mark Makes a good point here. How many inventions and innovations have
come from people who didn't know what there were getting into or how involved a project is. I think alot of people are at there creative best when they dive in head first and damn the torpedos.

Yes indeed !!!

There is no other way to achieve great innovations.

Otherwise, you bet other people would have done it well before.

...I encourage any who are frustrated to set aside one full minute to swear at us, kick the table, or whatever else you need to do to vent. Then come back and join the club with a clear purpose. Life is a long road.

Jim

Merci beaucoup for the advice.
I have broken toes, broken vocal cords...
The result is garanteed. I feel calm now.
...and the table is still OK !

Seriously, maybe i was wrong, but i always undertood that the first 1000 or so early adopters were in fact sort of beta testers.

It's going to be a fun year for me, being in the lion's den.... :ninja:

Cheers from the front line!

iTuness is already offering HD video. I've recieved at least 2 notices from them.
Lets' not forget Joost and other legit p2p sites.
