  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DAVINCI RESOLVE and ***HACKINTOSH***

Hey Luigi.

Do you have any plans for the gtx 570? Any thoughts about it?

waiting davinci 8 and final cut x and Lion , then decide which way to go;)

thnaks
Luigi

Hi Luigi,

thanks for sharing with us CUDA Generation 3. I installed it, but my displays aren't correctly recognized. The main display is cropped to 1240x1028, the other one is not recognized at all. I updated to 10.6.7 some weeks ago... does this matter? The Extra folder was deleted when I installed CADU Gen 3.

Thanks
David

GTX 480 vs GTX 285

GTX 480 vs GTX 285

Hi all!

Firstly, THANK YOU! and well done!

I'm currently running resolve with a single GTX 285 but I need more performance. What approximate performance increase (if no I/O bottlenecks etc) could I expect from going to a single GTX 480 or Dual GTX 480 (or could I run the 285 for GUI and use 480 for GPU???)

THANKS!

Ciao John,
thanks,
I suggest you use 2 evga GTX 470 or 2 gtx 480 colorfour + 1 GTX 285 for a GUI or all gtx 470/480, important max 3 card video in system Air if you have watercooled is possible to arrive at 4 video card.
The increase would be a better performace with more node.
If you use the R3D file is strongly recommended to use a Redrocket.
For starters, I suggest a i7 processor 960 and 24GB Ram.
Of course I'm talking about a mainboard ASUS p6t7supercomputer.

if you need other information here ;)

thanks
LUIGI

Thanks Luigi!

I'm currently running an i7@4.0GHz on a GA-EX58-UD5 [EDIT: with 12GB Corsair Platinum DDR3 RAM]. For now I think I'll use a single GTX 480 for GPU with a 285 for GUI and see how that goes (I'll find out tomorrow!). If I need a performance bump I'll sell the 480 and get a 590 when the prices come down a little (1024 Cuda cores!), or another 480.

Is it worth comparing performance with single 480 vs 480+285? or will it definitely be better with both? Also, does it matter what PCI ports I use? (I need to fit in 1x GTX 285, 1x GTX 480, 1x Blackmagic 3D (and 1xHDMI bracket), and 1xFW800. For the GA-EX58-UD5 which PCI ports would you reccommend?

I have OS X running smoothly on the hack with just the 285 (using Custombeast (i.e. DSDT.aml and /Extra configured by Tonymac for this spec machine), how would you recommend I install the 480 and update the install (if necessary?) ?

THANKS AGAIN,

I suggest you speak with Jose Lomena in this forum he be very practical gigabyte I only give support to the Asus P6T7 supercomputer mainboard.

thanks
Luigi ;)

DAVE P.
not use driver of new Imac with davinci not WORK....

thanks gayssss for fedback

Luigi

Jose has posted in GTX480 thread about using these very same drivers. Not sure which one of you is right.

In any case, I am hopeful to find someone in Hollywood who has a Resolve Mac Pro setup who would like to find THE ANSWER as to which GPU is best RIGHT NOW.

I can provide GTX285 2 Gig and a GTX470 and a GTX480. (and Power Supply for 480). I can even provide a Quadro 4000 Mac version as well.

I need someone with licensed Resolve setup with latest updates.

Ideally the same sequence would be run through Resolve with the different cards and compared to GTX 285 1 Gig.

I am an Art Director who dabbles in GPUs. I do not have sufficient tech knowledge of Resolve to do this test. But I think that MANY people are eager to know THE ANSWER. I will provide cards to test with if someone else will provide the system, files, and know-how.

While on the surface, the extra CUDA cores in 470 seem to make it obvious choice over 285, the GTX285 has greater "Device to Device" bandwidth in CUDA-Z.

Ciao DAve.

In my system last driver for Imac workwith all but not with DAVINCI. ANd in performance is same, only OPENCL change.
You ask what GPU is good, in my case i use 470 why is better then 285 new generation fermi GPU and is cheap.
DEVICE to DEVICE is better gtx 285 you are sure ... in my test the 470 is better to 285 see pics. But DAVINCI support the gtx 285 fx 4800 and quadro 4000. i find in my Hack is Important have same GPU in system.
DIfference of performance is very very small from 285 to 470 , but remember the Lion is coomig soon..... and driver is better and gtx 285 is strange to found.
I think my next system will be based on nvidia 570. Look to buy RESOLVE 8 to make a choice.
Another thing Dave, if you have money does not build a Hackintosh, if you have a company as a colorist I suggest you go with the original Mac Pro. I think a Mac Pro is a good choice is an outstanding machine, surely Apple will increase the PCIe slot in the future, if you configure MAc with redrocket 1 quadro 4000 and black magic 3d you work perfect.
FOR ME, the choice for you is definitely a nvidia quadro 4000

I give advice, if you want information professional with professional equipment Jeff Kilgroe is the best person in this forum.

sorry for my bad English

thanks
Luigi

The best choice is quadro 4000, because its only one slot and you dont need any water cooling ...

I installed the last imac driver and resolve did't start, but after reactivating cuda, it start like before. But i did't see any improvement with the last driver.

What improved my system a lot (fcp) was an ati card for gui. I used 95% time final cut and only 5% resolve.

But for intensive work with davinci i prefer to change the ati for an extra nvidia card. I used a lot mattes with davinci, and you need a lot of gpu processing for that.

Saludos,

Jose

.....Working in progressss..........!!!!....

New Alpha installer for LION in READY the name of new installer is CUDA GENERATION 4 "MACHETE"

- FULL 64 bit
- OPEN GL + OPENCL Improve performance
- BOOTING with Kernelchache..... ( with SSD Hard drive the boot is in 7 second.... impressing :w00t:) thanks to Kabyl and ^Andy^
- Nvidia 470-480 Work perfect with native driver of Lion ( the patch at dsdt work perfect :thumbup1:) thanks IRESET and team insanelymac
- Added the code for Xeon processor .

Not working in this moment:

- Output Audio rear port digital...( i am at work for this)
- Bug in sistem profile in REDROCKET driver , the system say no but the driver is ok and work ...

lates test:
- Final cut 7 + Black magic deklink 3D Work ( more performance vs SNow this is for better driver OpenGL )
- Adobe premiere 5.5 Work ( the 470 gtx is recognized for mercury)
- Davinci REsolve 7.1.2 NOT WORKING , problem with connect to database PostgreSQL. No possible to install in DP3 PostgreSQL , i wait new Realaise of LION and DAvinci 8.
- REDCINE-x 454 with REDROCKET Work
- CUDA DRIVER 4.0.14 Work

THe first relaise of CUDA GENERATION 4 "MACHETE" I let her out after one week of the first head of Lion, I hope to make it so ...
Thanks
Luigi

Who needs liquid cooling when you have two turbines from a Lear Jet inside your computer case? :nono:

Can you please let me know which computer case model is this and how much $ :)
