  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Burst" mode possible?

"Burst" mode possible?

HDRx is an excellent example of a 'hey, guess we could tweak things to do THIS' surprise - at least it was to me.

Burst mode is analogous. That's what hacking is all about - taking hardware, wringing its neck, and making it do things that were never envisioned when it was designed. RDC are hackers.

Sorry I wasn't trying to be indifferent for meanness sake. It's just best to move on if most likely there is no possibility.

One final thing I'll add. Even the FixedScarlet I used didn't have a burst mode.

but you don't know its impossible. Only the people that know reds deepest and darkest secrets can work out if it can be done. There is nothing stopping it. But I can tell you don't support it.

PS: what does the old scarlet have to do with anything?

Exactly!

Might be possible to offload a short sequence into ram and then write to the card or such to get higher frame rates for shorter periods, or?

Timothy, I just think the phrasing of the question is a bit off the mark. Should there be a burst mode is different to would people like a burst mode.

Everyone likes more options, but currently the Scarlet as it stands still has advertised features (mostly around the DSMC concept, like intervalometer and pre-record) that aren't operational, which ultimately SHOULD come out before a burst mode.

I don't think a burst mode is necessary for Scarlet to compete, and the actual burst modes I have seen to date on most other camcorders, from Sony etc, have had significant drawbacks that they obfuscate behind marketing speak. I'd rather RED focussed on getting the Scarlet and RED doing the things they have already promised/road mapped.

You talked about it before I even entered the conversation... ;)

The burst mode has been proposed by RED before with the 2/3 scarlet

I guess the burst mode is possible if sensor heat is the bottleneck, but maybe the proccessing is the bottleneck in the 35mm scarlet
(I have nothing to back this statement up :-) )

There we go :) Seems possible, so lets pitch it to red and boom there we go :)

Yes, I totally agree!

HDRx was a great example of tweaking things. Originally, HDRstills were slated for the EPIC and Scarlet. When the EPIC had proven to have such a high amount of "horsepower" to bring HDRxMotion, and it looked so good, potential Scarlet buyers wanted it too. RED's response was "Okay. But approximately $1,000 will be added to the Scarlet's price tag. Is that what you want?" And you know the rest of the story...

Not only was this a hardware upgrade, it was to be a price increase as well.

meh. Nessecerry to some not others. I know heaps of people that won't buy a scarlet because it doesn't have burst mode.

doesn't mean that IF burst was to happen, it would need extra hardware. I don't think you guys see the benifits here. Keep in mind that there are people that don't care about HDRx, dynamic range, raw files, etc as long as they get a video. While the scarlet might not be for them, a firmware upgrade to enable burst mode, will bring this camera to the top in my book.

Why are people voting against a burst mode? If they add a feature you won't use, how does that hurt you?
If you own an Epic it hurts your rentals if the Scarlet can do high frame rate bursts.

That being said, I thought Scarlet was eventually gonna have burst modes. Nothing ridiculous like 120fps at 4k, but maybe 48@4K for 10-15 seconds or something like that. I could be and probably am wrong about that. This could have been a spec from the 2/3 sensor days.

well I was talking about 2k 120. But if it just goes to R1 specks, but in burst for say 7-10sec, no buisness hurt there...

Hi there,

So far I understand the RED Scarlet/Epic as a modular system. I have no idea if the preparation is not already done or if it would be possible:

What about a "Memory Module", that can take in the max data-rate from the body and plays it back after stop? In other words a buffer-module that you "screw" on the back of camera body.

Just my two cents.

Best

might not be nessecerry. I think it can be accheived on the software side.

Do the kind of people who want to artificially limit features to protect higher models really visit this board? I thought they all shot with Sony cams.

I thought that people were all like "Wow red tries to squeeze the most out of there cameras". Now everyone complaining because were trying adding functionality?!?!? I can see some peoples points about the epic becoming "obsolete" but that's simply not true.

I voted No for my scarlet, since I'd like them to focus on power management and stability ... I worry about a ton of "options" which actually do effect everyone, since that adds complexity which effects firmware stability, and ton's of complexity also makes power management difficult. I also don't like the concept of beginners using"hacked" camera's and constantly running beta experiments, then creating weird impressions in forums. I'm ok with total experts that can flush $20k down the drain hacking things, since they don't rent out hammered equipment and don't whine when things break (if they are hacked). Power management also means reduced fan noise, which is also important to me.

True, but there is only so much you can do with power management. Im also sure they dont have 1 tech working on the firmware, so others can do other features etc.

What about making it a purchasable license feature... you want it? buy the license for as long as you need it!
