  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Don't worry there isn't some new technical issue that has ended the warranty agreement

the mount at this time is just alot different than the mount it was when we made the agreement

This second statement is just not true. The Birger/Canon mount, and the Birger/RED camera adapter have neither changed mechanically or electrically since the signing of the warranty agreement on 20 January 2009.

The notice of cancellation of the warranty agreement was predated by four weeks with the submission of a Birger/PL lens mount for your review because it happens to be mechanically compatible with the Birger/RED camera adapter, as it has an identical mechanical interface as the Birger/Canon lens mount. It should be noted that this is a product that: had yet to be offered for sale; and is not in any way specific to, nor does it even touch, the RED camera.

LoL.. I wont get into the real details here Erik... Im done with this.

Birger is out?

Birger is out?

Sorry if this has been discussed, but I believe this means my plans to take advantage of rebates on Canon EF lenses without aperture rings is down the tubes. Am I correct in saying that there is no other current alternative for using Canon lenses without aperture rings until Epic is released?

Unfortunately, it looks like no, unless you were approved before Jarred's latest ruling. :-(

If your year warranty on the Red is up then does it really matter?

As for changing the aperture, the guys at Red Rock Micro make a little ring that fits between the lens and a canon dumb mount which can change the electronic aperture on canon lenses that runs around $500.

what a mess.. sad

thought birger was a reduser institution

Yes.. unless we have your registered warranty agreement, Installing a Birger mount on a Red one will Void Trade in ability for Epic or any of the other Stages. ( Tattoo etc. )

As much as Birger has stated nothing changed since the warranty agreement was done (total bullshit btw, Hijacking/Hacking the I-pin data both electrically and software wise, is just one example ) it has changed and the changes always have happened without our knowledge. We bent the rules to allow this mount to not violate our Camera warranty, at the best interest to the Customer, which of course to benefit Birger.. but we have always been treated with a lack of respect and have always been " the last to know " by Erik.

Now Erik is asking customers to Return cameras to RED for refunds because of all this.. funny stuff.

<<WARNING>> <<RANT>>

<<WARNING>> <<RANT>>

<<<RANT DELETED>>>

I re-read my post and felt it was not very constructive, in fact probably the opposite.

The Birger mount is brilliant. It expands the potential of the RED One substantially. The ability to get data from the lens is remarkable.

>>>Now if only the rest of this situation were equally brilliant, it would be amazing.<<<

Erik, I sent an email to you.

Dekekincaid,

First off, this is a real name forum. Please contact jason at landmine dot tv to get yours sorted.
strange, last I knew "Deke Kincaid" was my real name. :)

Second, I think that installing an unapproved mount will also void your chance to trade in your R1 for an Epic.
Ahh, got it. Jared didn't mention anything about that in his post.

Jarred, what is wrong with another system using the I-pin data?

If it works whats the real problem?

Of course if one wanted it to work one would have to incorporate the electronics and software aspects. I'm not an engineer but I'm pretty sure all of those go hand in hand.

Instead of this he said, she said banter Jarred why don't you make a video with one of yer fancy type cameras and show us plain folk exactly how it is different and why it violates the warranty. This way everything is clear.

:nono:I am not taking one side or the other.

I am taking my side :sifone:and whats in my best interest as a customer.

Speaking only for myself I know that the quality of the Birger Mount is second to none. I've seen a lot of :puke:crap go down on these forums and what I am hearing now starts showing up on the crapometer. Maybe my crapometer is broken, maybe not.

So why not? Lets see a video:lurk5: from either Erik or Jarred explaining the mount. Jarred since Red has put the big rubber stamp on Birger why don't you go first?

this doesn't seem like the type of issue that can be resolved with a video. from what i can gather, it's not as much a technical issue as it is a broken promises issue. thus you get the he said/she said stuff.

i have a birger mount that fully complied with my red's warranty at the time of installation. works great...when it works. support is spotty. sometimes erik is quick to respond and helpful. other times he cannot be reached and doesn't bother to reply to any messages or emails begging for support. he is a one man show being pulled in too many directions and red has a much bigger market in mind. i think the fact that red has developed (or at least contracted a non-birger engineer) their own nikon and canon electronic mounting solutions says volumes on their current relationship with birger.

Craig you may be right. If it is a case of not seeing eye to eye then any talk regarding the technical aspects is mute.

Please Erik and Jarred...have a beer.

Please Erik and Jarred...have a beer.

PLease dont let this get out of hand.
I can easy understand Jarred problems with 3rd party mount intergraded intro the electronic is a problem. And it would be great if Erik would respect RED´s demands to support the Birger system. Even when it mean that mount has to get to RED if it gets a paintjob.

I was one of the early ones to adabt the Birger systems. And it has been long way of waiting and problems. But now it is working. Birger supports.
So please Erik . Call Jarred and give him an apology. Jarred ..forgiveness..PLease.

We love your camera. And the politics at RED. BUt i allso love my Birger mount.

Why is it that RED owners lose the upgrade if they chose option 2. They keep the camera anyway without warrenty. Why care what they do with the camera.

I remenber at the beginning that RED would not support electronic controls of Canon or Nikon. Because it was reversengineering of the protocols from Nikon/canon. But now with Epic/scarlet it is there. So what if Canon/nikon says the same. If you use nikon/canon on a none Nikon/canon camera you will void your warrenty on your lenses.

Not saying that i am not happy that you are making it happen. We want electronic control.

But please Erik and Jarred. Talk. Birger is not a RED company. PLease give him a helping hand. I will pay the beers and the cigars.

The RED camera has change my life. Really change it for the better.

Keep up the good work

Cheers

Jarred I think you could cut Erik some slack. Erik is his company and has a lot of emotion invested into it. Not saying you don't by being a part of the Red Team. Erik has had to deal with a lot of shit single handed and I can see where I would get frustrated between trying to get a good product out, fielding rants and untrue posts and kissing ass. Personally I wouldn't be able to do that job, I never have been good at ass kissing. Erik's name is his business.

As you told me once Jarred, we all get a little caught up in things sometimes because we are emotionally involved in our work.

Jarred you are obviously emotionally caught up in this by the words you use. Erik you as well.

I would love to say more, but on what? Don't tell us what the problem is, show us... . If there is nothing to show then resolve it.

Or could I venture a guess that there are to many users who don't know how to power off their camera before changing mounts?

Where there's smoke there's fire...

Jarred,

Can we get clarification as to which cameras are supported (and how they will be supported) given the Nov 15th announcement.

Is the requirement:
-Cameras must have been purchased before Nov 15th
-Mounts must have been purchased before Nov 15th (receipt required)
(Thus the mount was installed before the announcement)
Thanks.

Unless I'm mistaken, that clever device will only work on the M2e, so it's not an option for Red.
