Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Sigmonster Focus Counts Question

Sigmonster Focus Counts Question

I hope to be back this weekend and will try it with a Sigma 300-800, which doesn't have a focus speed switch.

Isaac, or Erik: Can you tell me how many encoder counts the Sigma 300-800 has?

The 600mm F4 I'm using has some 6000 counts reported by the Birger mount, but my 100-400mm zoom has only 2000 counts, which makes focusing a lot more course. I'd like to know if the Sigmonster focuses as finely as the prime lens.

Hey... What's THAT suppose to mean?!

I think he's just pointing out that you are wise, have great vision and love to fly. People have said the same about me (except the wise part)

Looking forward to your videos Jay.

Will you be at NAB this year?

...and that should finish out the current batch.

hi Erik,
does this refer to the batch of mounts without the impero ? I still have no shipping number ?
very much looking forward to some news as I am due to start shooting in two weeks... and I really want to prove the naysayers wrong !

We came up a few shipments short today. We should have it wrapped up on tuesday, at which point I will announce the same, in case we missed anybody.

I spoke to Curt today about the Imperos, and we will not be shipping any to birger customers until the final version is available. I am seeing too much packet loss at 20 feet, especially if the antenna is pointed in the wrong direction. For the most part anything over 20 foot range isn't that important. But this increase of 5x in range means 125x greater signal (the cube of the distance). That means reliable communication. That is worth waiting for.

We will keep building mounts while Curt waits for the plastics. We will have a big wave of shipments as soon as Imperos start heading east.

Thank you for the update Erik. I have ordered back in Nov. 2007, paid in full since Oct. 2008, and waited patiently ever since, so I am hoping to be in that first batch as well.

I guess the middle button on the mount causes it to run the lens, finding range points for focus? Any idea why, when I push the middle button on the mount, it does this test forever? I turned the camera off to stop it after 15min. 50mm L series, 1.2 Cannon lens.
Thanks

Thanks for the update. We hope we won't need to wait much longer or you'll be shipping the full system after new RED systems release. BTW, any idea on your compatibility with them? I mean as further Scarlet FF35 combo. Any plans?

Got my mount last night. Installed. Still need to finish collimating. Having to pull the thing apart for minor adjustments kind of blows, but once its done, its done. The construction is rock solid. Fitting the i-data connector is really rough. Will be a pain when switching mounts regularly. I'm trying to think of a creative solution to make this connection easier, but still fit inside that little cavity with the rest of the i-data cable.

Calibrating the two lenses I put on last night, seems to be slow (taking a long time, aka. Bob Trim's email). After removing and swapping lenses a few times, things started behaving more like I expected, but still a little confusing at the get-go.

I've got a friend coming over to put on his Leica lenses (with adapter) to see how well that works out. Will post footage once everything is dialed in.

Countdown...

Countdown...

23 mounts left in this shipping cycle. If you did not get a fedex tracking yet today, it will go out tomorrow. Please wait to say "what about me?" until I post tomorrow afternoon saying that we have counted down to zero.

Your Canon EF lens mount for your RED camera is available for shipment
within the week. Your remote control (knob) is not yet available for
shipment. As per your order placed with us this shipment will be for
the "CANON EF LENS MOUNT STARTER KIT for RED ONE Camera" which takes the
place of the following items previously ordered:

Hi Eric/Amy
Received the above e-mail from you 18 Feb 2009 and replied with a few questions, though did not hear back.
Am more than happy for you to charge the balance owing to my CC, but would like to have a realistic indication as to how long before you get to fill orders placed half way through 2008. Any feedback would alleviate the waiting.

best
joe

it's a pity things didn't get to ship according to original plans, otherwise you might have been able to claim that Birger was used for some fx elements on "Knowing".... just saying...... and still waiting.....

-----------------
edit: OK, some 30 minutes later a Birger mount walks in my door from our shipping guy... who now tells me he got a Fedex notice yesterday...
... WTF..... now I'm confused...
ours was supposed to come WITH the Impero as a single shipment, not as separate shipments....

A big thanks to you Erik & Amy for getting it out the door... pity the camera's on a job for 4 days now.. (sigh)

....now where did that Impero go...??? and whats with these silly new smileys???

Update. Got everything dialed in smooth. Collimation felt like I was making "best guesses" but Eriks solution allows a lot of movement on the dials to make very subtle changes on the back focal distance. We went through a set of Leica primes, and my Canon 16-35mm L, and eventually nailed the focus. Once we got in a rhythm for making the collimation adjustment, things went pretty smooth, and focus was accurate and consistent across all the lenses but the Leica 60mm (tested 35, 50, 60, 90, 180) (we are assuming that the 60 is off mark).

I didn't shoot any footage through the Leica glass, but if anyone would like to see it, I can get them back any time. We will probably shoot some legitimate stock footage on them in the upcoming weeks.

But, I promised footage, so I shot a quick little setup on the kitchen table with the 16-35mm. You can view it here:

http://www.vimeo.com/3845688

Aside from a white-balance correction, no other processing has been done to the footage. It was shot in available light at full aperture (and thus fairly under exposed).

All in all, I'm very happy with the image that I'm getting. I put on some Ultra Primes the other day, and did a complete PL back-focus adjustment at the shop, and I think these are just as sharp as the UPs. You can see some slight breathing in the Canon, but its relatively minor. Certainly minor enough not to be an issue for clients who can't (or aren't willing to) afford UP/MPs.

My camera is going out on a shoot this weekend. They were planning on taking Nikon glass, but have since decided to go Canon since the mount came in.
