  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

The video that has caused so much hurt seems to have disappeared. Kids.
If they're not your own, you want them gone - who else could stand them, or their friends?....

Now on to the Birger mount. Agree, pay, deliver and enjoy! (Just watch that sandwich with mayo!!).....

Your right Mark.. maybe i worded that wrong. There is nothing scary about the Birger mount, its a well made product, but the process can be scary.. once you start taking layers off of the camera that were not supposed to come off, it can be a little intimidating. Videos (if they are implemented correctly) and additional user written guides (again, if they are accurate) can help ease that nervousness for the less mechanically inclined...

You would be amazed at how many cameras we see come into Red with broken or scratched OLPF filters due to a slip from an Allen key.
reason enough for providing the installation service straight from the origin..

Back Focus, it's really critical!

Back Focus, it's really critical!

I did my back focus adjustment using a 9" Panasonic 720P monitor with 2x zoom. I combined this with the camera's side button 2x monitor enlargement, setting the camera project at 2k and two pairs of close-up glasses (1.25 and 3.25 combined together, yes I was wearing two pairs of glasses at the same time). I thought I was good to go for critical adjustment while I looked really closely at my HD 9" monitor. And my adjustments looked perfect to me.

But, today, just for grins, I set up a 50 inch Panasonic plasma with 3x zoom to check my work. Guess what? I was a little off. So, I readjusted it, this time to perfection. All the lenses still track. But this just showed me that 4k is huge and small monitors can throw away a lot of info, leaving you to guess on the wide end. Even using the 50 inch plasma, I could not get right on without at least 2x zoom on the monitor, in addition to the 2x from camera and the project set at 2K.

I share the same concern.

Red could probably have the LCD show a 10x cropped view without much difficulty. That would make precision focusing much easier.

Was away for four days and have tried to figure out what the heck has been going on. Nevertheless, sounds like the Birger mount will be shipped tomorrow or the day after. If so, have a weird feeliing should send the very best Scandinavian chocolate not to Erik but instead to Jarred who has managed so well lately with the drama on this thread.

You don't often see this thread go two days without a post.

Any progress to report today, Erik?

Back in the office today. Test fixture for the lens mount pcb arrived today and it has the expected positive impact on throughput.

The test fixture for the red adapter board (bluetooth, specifically) did not arrive today and should be here tomorrow. Turns out, we put a test point in a really stupid place on the red adapter boards, and this test fixture makes all of the difference in getting these things out the door. Without the fixture tuning the radios is a really tedious process. Radio tuning is currently the gate to finishing the batch.

I am reminded of a dadism (i.e. something my father said to me, that probably didn't make me happy at the time, but remembered many times over)... "if you can't build it, it isn't a product..." While I am on the topic, some of the other dadisms that may have come to mind in the past few months: "you've got the classic problem: how to eat an elephant..." and "there's a smart way of doing things and a dumb way... this certainly isn't the smart way..."

I think we will be getting a lot of stuff tested and out the door over the next few days. I'll post next by end of day wednesday.

So, what's the word, today. Sure looking forward to getting that mount.

It would be nice to get an update as to how Birger will interact with the i/data upgrade RED will be doing shortly too.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Erik said they don't plan to use the /i-cable for lens data. One of the LEMO cables will do that, but they'll have to work with RED to get that displayed in some form on the rear display. Not sure when that will be implemented.

At least, if we had one way or another to see the aperture info, that'd be great!

Fedex brought the test fixture this afternoon, instead of this morning, and we had to do some debug. It had three shorts - old school, microscope and an X-Acto knife. We just finished with the fixture, and it now works as planned. The script that runs the fixture does still need some minor debug in the morning.

Nothing shipped today, due to the test of the production fixtures.

Thursday we will spend the bulk of the day building / testing / shipping... Next update end of day thursday. Thanks to all that are holding tight - fewer phone calls really helps us stay productive. I see the light...
