  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Ketch:

I think your explanations and comparisons would be very helpful now that a lot of us are about to get mounts.

I think your basic point that it is well worth getting L glass. I bought the zooms first as I think it will cover most of my needs and it minimizes lens changes (which helps keep the sensor clean) but I am very curious about the various primes.

In general I think most people would want the 70-200 L 2.8 for sure. I bought 10-22mm instead of the 16-35 because of my need for the 10mm for underwater work. And then the 17-55 because of the IS as I find it extremely useful for a lot of still photography, particularly candid stuff where it is often much more natural without having to use flash. I was hoping Canon would come out with a II series 24-70 with IS at PMA in January but it didn't happen.

Joelnet,

when I say posting personal knowledge of various Canon Glass, I'm referring to lens vs. lens, and not Breathing tests as one, I don't have a Birger mount as yet and two, I haven't received my cameras as yet.

This was more an offering about giving a specific test knowledge of the various L series lenses, and the cheaper non L series lenses, to give people a way to get a full kit with the best glass for the money, spending less were all possible without penalizing image quality with RED/BIRGER.

Ciao

I'll be posting a lens fact and try to have it "STICKY" on the lens threads. with comprehensive and as detail info as I can.
So look for it tomorrow evening on the "LENS TEST" section.

Ciao

I'm guessing Erik is still waiting for the first assembled units to arrive and to test them fully before making any new announcement or start charging our CC's again. Hopefully everything will be fine and he'll able to ship the first few mounts out soon. If not, and if there's going to be some further delay it would be very helpful to hear about it as soon as possible. Do not leave us in the dark here!

Has anyone tested the bluetooth remote or the wired FF for that matter on a powered Birger? Just want to make sure this thing works before I pay for it. Hope the electronic/virtual nature of the FF expands the range of the focus scale like a cine lens has natively.

I've had the original ef-232 for over a year now, and it has a few issues that needed hardware revisions to overcome. Eric is on top of it, and I'm sure he won't release a product until it performs the way it should. Mine is mounted on a Redrock Micro35 / HVX-200 rig, although a Red Camera is definitely in my future.

The original ef-232 adapter worked OK, but it needed a software update to do "Fast Focus", which is a command mode that does not wait for an ack. from the lens before accepting the next focusing command. Once Eric created this firmware program change the unit really started to work well.

There are some deficiencies with some lenses that make them unusable. For example, the 50mm f/1.4 has 2 issues that make it unusable, the focus drifts and the barrel moves while focusing, causing the image to jump. The 35mm F/2 is supposed to be junk. If you want a 35mm or 50mm prime you will need to get the 'L'.

On the flip side I have the 28mm f/1.8 and the 85mm f/1.8 and they focus flawlessly (on my work bench at least). Like everyone else here I am waiting on Eric to get me the new mount so I can redo my controller in Bluetooth.

You can see some screen grabs from the 28mm / Redrock / HVX rig here. The grain is from the Redrock, and focusing was an issue as I did not have a battery solution for my Marshall monitor. The F-Stop was also set to 35 on a dumb mount, so I couldn't change it. The actual footage looks pretty good on a 47" 1080p TV.

i talked to Birger's people yesterday and they said 2-3 weeks for my mount (i'm 79 in line; i ordered november 27 if memory serves me correctly), so they're tracking along pretty well at this point it seems.

by the way, i never received a confirmation email, but did get a little hit on my credit card 6 or 8 weeks ago--just in case you've heard little from them and were wondering.

You know, I was going to make a joke about how "I talked to Erik yesterday, and he said maybe two or three weeks until it ships," because that's been the word to everyone for the last month or two. I didn't really think that was still the case.

The 50mm f/1.4 isn't up to date, it has the old Micro USM instead of the new Ring USM. The 35mm f/2.0 has the AFD that is an "antique" AF-motor. The 24mm f/2.8, 28mm f/2.8, 135mm f/2.8 softfocus, 50mm f/2.5 macro have AFD and the 50mm f/1.8 has MM (micromotor, is obsolete), I think it is better not to use these lenses.
So it is better to use EF-lenses with Ring USM and the best way to go is with L lenses, much better build quality.

Thanks for posting Bob!

Tracking along well in which way? Like Akabaka`s saying whenever you call you always receive the 2,3 weeks answer...
Aqua, wer`nt you planning the March on Boston?

Yes, is it that time already?

Might have to postpone - I'm wounded:

Posted this yesterday on the War at RED thread:

A week and a half ago while doing a bit of manual override machining on my CNC milling machine (on Ken Corben's underwater housing for the RED) I forgot to turn off the spindle and reached in to file off a burr and stuck my hand into a sixflute 1.25" end mill spinning at 1200RPM.

I had to tell Ken there was another RED delay - blood red this time.

I get the 14 stitches out tomorrow. Fortunately no tendon damage but he had to figure out how close up the missing 1.25" circle of missing skin.

Ooh! Yuch! Let's not start that one or I will show you my appendectamy scar! :)
The factory of the future will have only two employees, a man and a dog. The man will be there to feed the dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment. ~Warren G. Bennis

I'm almost there just gotta get the dog.

Wow, that looks like a really bad wound. I hope you're healing fine.

Erik, get this man his mount already, he's starting to do crazy things!

Yeah, it's all Erik's fault - if we had a Birger mount I wouldn't have been machining for a control for a crappy Arri 8R. LOL.

Thanks, Paolo. It's healing well and no tendon damage.

What's the range on Bluetooth. Might have to go satellite.

Although if you're really pushed Aircable offer a 28 Mile (45 kilometer) bluetooth extender!

Wow. That's gotta allow for some kind of crazy crane shot...

By the way, it looks like Birger is going with the industrial flavor of Bluetooth :gun::

On the feature front, how does class 1 bluetooth sound (100 meter range)? We are working to get it in there as we finalize everything this week.

"He said he would have the first 10 done next week and volume shipping the following week."

Anybody got the mount?
