Only 107s are in the current batch, and have received the newest email about ten days ago. Emails to the next batch will start to go out after we finish shipping this batch. Okay to ask if you have not received an email by 20 August.

Educated Guess

Educated Guess

This is a huge thread and I have skimmed it but I am looking for an educated guess, something of a hypothosis...

I ordered my Birger mount June 9, 2008 and just sent an email confirming Birger can withdraw full payment. Where would this put me in terms of receiving a mount (Canon with Nikon adapter)?

I'm thinking it would be sometime in September - could be wrong, though.

Software control... Early next week we expect to release PocketPC (Microsoft Windows Mobile) version of the application that will let you use a $300 PDA to talk to the mount over BlueTooth for display of lens data and control. Because we did this on .NET, we only need to do a GUI layout to fit on a 320x240 touchscreen to get this working.

Curt will be getting one of the engineering units so he might have some interesting things to say next week...

I hope that this doesn't mean that the wireless FF won't include lens data... It would be ideal if the wired FF also included f/stop and focus distance, but...

I'm not sure what you mean by "Canon with Nikon adapter." The Canon mounts are starting to ship now, and Erik has said recently that he hopes to get all existing Canon orders fulfilled by the end of the month. (I wouldn't bank on that though — no offense, Erik.) The focusing knobs are still being finalized; maybe they'll start shipping this month, but again, I would assume later for planning purposes.

As for the "smart" Nikon mounts, we haven't heard about those in a while, and I have no idea how far along they are in development. The latest order form gives October '08 as the date for availability, but... :umm:

Of course, if you have the Canon mount and don't need electronic focusing on your Nikon lenses, you can always just get a little adapter from eBay for $20 or so.

What will the addition of /i pins change for the Birger mount?

I don't know if they have communicated anything to Erik, (since my camera and Birger mount number 2 is on a boat off of Belize right now, I have been leaving Erik alone to get work done.) but my assessment is that if they stay with the current i/cable, it wouldn't change anything. However, since they are also opening the camera and swapping the audio board as well, they may have been able to do something to beef up the i/cable at the same time. They are aware of Birger (and IMS) so I would think if they do change the i/cable it would be either compatible or an improvement vis a vis Birger (and maybe IMS).

In addition the fact that they are installing the i/pins would suggest they are ready to implement lens data into the recorded metadata (the whole point of i/data) so that would open the door to having Birger feed EF lens info to the camera as well.

All of this is total speculation on my part though. PASSTCWON.

(PASSTCWON: prices and specifications subject to change without notice)

It may just be that Red has identified the i/data cable as a potential weakness in the system due to the electrical surge damage it previously failed to prevent. So their decision to update the iData portion of the camera might not signify anything except that they want to prevent surge damage in the future. Then again, maybe it is the lens data communications that they're interested in upgrading, and so perhaps they'll leave the surge risks just as they are.

It would be nice if they turn the cable into a removable female/male socket connection recessed into the body, so that the cable could be removed from the camera before using 3rd party mounts. Messy machining for that though, so I think probably the cable will remain as it is.

Wow, I never thought I'd have to "search" for this thread and find it the eighth thread down. It's a good sign, I think. :)

Looks like I will have to pick up a PL lens and then a Canon while I wait on the Nikon smart mount. It's worth it though. Plus it's always good to have backups.

I had a dream last night. I was swimming... and was drowning.... someone was like "Mike!!!!" and I was swallowing water..... and at the last moment they threw me out a Birger mount, I grabbed onto it and was saved....

Mike,

Go back to the real world.

Call ZGC.

Order IMS for RED.

Choose and order your mount(s).

Collect some manual still photo lenses (primes and zooms).

Then you are ready to go for Burning Man.

Uh... last I heard the IMS mount still voids the RED warranty. As long as that's the case (and even if you don't care about electronic focusing) Birger is still a more viable option than P+S.

I wouldn't like to jump now in discussions like a Birger vs. IMS, etc... but what I would like to say that IMS is until today one of the most valuable accessories for RED camera.

Just count:

Easy and fast swapping between the following lens mounts on RED:

Arri PL Mount, Panavision Mount, BNC-R Mount, Professional F-Mount, Nikon F-Mount, Canon EF-Mount, Canon FD-Mount, Contax Mount, Leica-R Mount and Leica-M Mount.

I'm not arguing the merits of the IMS mount, because I know it's a terrifically versatile product — or will be when it's approved. Just keep in mind that the latest delay to the Birger mount (which is now starting to ship) was to get approval from RED, so that installing the mount won't void the warranty automatically. As far as I know, the P+S IMS mount hasn't received the same kind of approval. When you recommend that Mike get an unapproved mount on his camera, without mentioning that he does so at his own risk, are you willing to pay for any repairs that might be incurred after he installs it? It's thin ice to tread.

Mike is in a urgently need to shoot at Burning Man in a week or so.

ZGC could handle the case of IMS warranty issue with RED.

Also Birger till today didn't get any official statement from RED about new status with warranty.

Time is runnig in a Mike's case.

BTW. my RED with IMS preforms perfect. No issues. And about a warranty. It's all about bureaucracy.

Again Mike and others are in a need of shooting right now.

The Birger warranty issue was settled weeks ago:

At this point we are prepared to move forward with this.. I am pleased to announce that the Birger mount will not void the global camera warranty with the modifications Erik has done.

Note though.. that any parts damaged from a potential electronic malfunction directly caused by the mount will not be covered.. and things like breaking the adjustable PL of the mount on removal/installation will not be covered ( since it never was designed to be removed)

Because of the removal of the adjustable section is required, the Birger mount will not be RED Certified, but I think alot of you will be happy with the fact that it does not void your global camera warranty.

251 pages later....
that is the official announcement :)

Bureaucracy or not, people need to know if the mount they purchase will void their entire warranty. If people are really desperate for an SLR lens solution, there's always the official Nikon mount.

Sanjin. I wish the IMS guys would post here... They seem to be out of touch with the people of the forum.

will the IMS mount do blue tooth? will is do IS for the Canon IS lenses? I only have Canon lenses. Will the IMS do icable info like the Birger will?

I have invested in Birger since day one. I do feel obligued to carry through.

Have you tested the other lenses on the IMS?
Mike
