  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Atomos Samurai and Scarlett-X - VOTE HERE!

I am in collaboration with Atomos on this setup, and will be doing a very in depth review on the pair. Feel free to email us for any questions, or also what you want to see done. Jeromy and I will be putting the scarlet and Samurai through the paces here in Vegas shortly.....

Personally I love the idea of a ProRES recorder for some of the dull as jobs I do where I need to record all day long. Hey, it pays the bills already, but if it can help pay for the camera then great. I also think there is value in using a recorder as a modern version of the DV tape recording for directors playback etc leaving the RAW files to be transferred and backed up while you are viewing the PRORES. HOWEVER I think the smart money on this one is waiting until someone makes a 4k PRORES recorder. We all know 4k is the future and if we can't always have RAW, ProRES or DNxHD is less capable alternative.

As an aside; obviously RED should read this and make us a ProRED option, that's not RAW but saves us dirtying ourselves on other brands.

I can't record the output of my scarlett on the samourai. The "rec" button is not available but i can monitor the output. Any idea ? I am on firmware 2.8 on the samourai.

Reboot the Scarlet. And make sure you change the camera trigger on the Samurai to RED EPIC.

Thank you it works now.

Sometime, the samourai goes to record when i hit the screen to access the scarletts menu, so you have to be carefull. The image quality seems nice. I have also made test with sound in the scarlett : the sound is also embedded and recorded on the samourai. But I dont know how to monitor this sound on the samourai during recording.

Does the Samurai recognize the filenames from the Scarlet like the PIX 240 does?

Hey guys, forgive me if this has been covered before, but does the Samurai record EPIC/SCARLET metadata as well? So the filenames and TC match? So that the EDL is easy to online later at 4K to grade from the R3Ds?

For whatever its worth, a DP friend of mine, Ed David, who shoots on the F3, has used all the recorders on the market (Ki Pro, Pix 240, Samurai), and to my surprise he loves the Samurai head and shoulders above the rest. Apparently the footage looks great, its easy to use, and best of all the batteries have the unit running all day. A bring problem he had with the Pix 240 is that it consumed a lot of juice. He found it difficult to deal with on long doc shoots when he wasn't around a charger as much.

For whatever its worth...

Just a short response. Hooked the Samurai up to the Scarlet; it looks gorgeous - footage very little different from what i see in RedCinePro-X. Although missing benefits of RAW, a very decent full-debayer downscaled representation of the R3D file; great for rushes, proxies or if you have 1080p work and want to save time.

Anyone?

A photographer posted an interesting question at Scarletuser: Could one record 5k full frame full motion to an external 1080p deck to take advantage of the larger field of view? Some might consider that an advantage.

I can certainly see the advantage to adding an external 1080p recorder that costs about the same as 64GB SSD to shoot low end fast turn video projects. Setting up a selection of practical video LUTs in camera for this kind of use should allow shooting high quality HD as you would with any other HD camera.
Why limit the multi-functional potential of the camera?

And what about 23.976? Does RED's HDMI spit out 24hz or 60 (like most everything else)? I think the Samurai can do pull-down, but I'd be worried about mis-fired frames and stuff... Can anyone comment?

From the manual:

"HDMI video output is Progressive Scan; it does not support 1080i or 1080PsF modes"

Besides, the Samurai is SDI only.

Thanks Bob! I was thinking of the Ninja, not the Samurai... Actually, if the SX is spitting out 1080p/23.976 out of it's HDMI, would you know if that's what the Ninja would record (or does cause handshake issues or something)? The Ninja is under $1000 and comes with dual batteries, case, and everything else needed (except HDDs)... that'd be a pretty cheap external monitor solution with the ability to record direct to prores... And I think the monitor (while smaller) is the same resolution as the RED touch. However all of that is moot if I need to do a pull-down.

I'm pretty sure the NINJA will record fine the 23.97 stream without pulldown. The NINJA doesn't actually add pulldown, it's just that most cameras spit out an interlaced signal through the HDMI. Red however does not. The screen on the Ninja is not as good as the Samurai, but not by much. It's fine for framing but not really focus. For less than $1000, its a good deal.

Difficult decision... I know SDI is a far more robust connection, I just don't know if the samurai is worth the additional ~$500 (I could buy quite a few 500gig/12+hour 2.5" hard drives for that cash.) Plus I wouldn't be using it on any mission critical jobs (that's what RAW is for).

...Does the HDMI out of the camera have the same issue as the SDI when connected to a recorder (as in, does it have the black border)?

Thanks again for the heads up.
