  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Atomos Samurai and Scarlett-X - VOTE HERE!

I don't think HDMI can carry timecode. The proxy workflow is not part of the Epic/Scarlet workflow and doubt it will be in the future.

Sebastian, Rafael - any results with your Scarlets + Atomos products? I'd love to hear some feedback on that setup.

Aaron, thanks for your thoughts. What is the timecode situation via HDMI? I thought it did carry timecode?

I won't ever going back to RAW for my uses (and I think Scarlet will make proxies in the future, like the One does, correct?), and I definitely don't need outtakes. I am just thinking of quick little corporates/interviews, etc. Useful timecode is an asset, but I don't need it to refer to anything else, so as long as it is present, unique and visible at the time of recording, that is fine.

Is the quality of the display of the Atomos Samurai good enough when you used as a lcd dipslay for filming , focusing , ......?

Major,

In my opinion it is not. It is hard to even see in daylight and it's quite flat. A handy framing reference and confidence monitor but not much more.

No, the display is really bad for pulling focus, etc. But hey, who said you would get a great display AND a prores recorder for less then 1k.
The recorder itself works great. The images that come out are perfect, if you don't need 4k and some heavy grading I would say most people wouldn't see any difference.
You have to be careful to always record in QuadHD, or you will have some black borders on top and bottom.

We have two 500GB Scorpio Blacks, that make up to 14hours of record time for about 150$. That is cheap, compared to any other storage out there.
The touchscreen works really great, better than I expected.
As soon as we have our Scarlet back from RMA (don't ask), I will post some footage.

That's true. However it's a Sony solution. There is no standard for HDMI to carry such data (although it theoretically could). So if RED did provide such a feature it also would have to be propriety. Has there been any 3rd party vendor taking advantage of Sonys protocols yet? Just curious.

It does on a Sony FS100.

Good news, their getting there. The big question, will this update be compatible with Scarlet/Epic ?

It would be nice if the lucky few Scarlet owners with Samurai could post once they've loaded the software update & taken it for a drive around the block.

Looks like it will, here's a quote from the firmware page...

"Cameras can output the camera record state on HD-SDI in an ancillary data packet. The Samurai will start/stop the recorder if this packet is detected.

This means when you hit record on the camera and the camera starts recording, so will the Samurai. When you hit record on the camera and the camera stops recording, so will the Samurai. Supported cameras are Sony, Panansonic, Red, Canon and Arri. Not all cameras output the ancillary data packet so naturally the Samurai will not respond."

Yes. The PIX 240 reads the Sony HDMI timecode.

Since doing the latest firmware update I am having trouble with my Red One and the Samurai. When I plug the recorder into the camera output the screen becomes unstable and record becomes impossible. Also if I select monitor the image looks 180 degrees phase shifted but looks good in the camera's EVF. Tried 720x1280 at both 50 and 60hz also playback at 1080p 25 but no help although the recorder correctly names the type of input. Took it back to the supplier and when plugged into a Sony F3 and a Panasonic camera with the same cable all was well with the Samurai. The cameras are outputting an interlaced version of progressive so maybe this is a clue?
Are there any camera settings I need to address?

Hey Tom, that sounds pretty annoying. Have you notified Atomos? I wonder how it goes with the epic? Also, what do you mean by 'although the recorder correctly names the type of input'?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't you lose all the benefits of recording in RAW if you use an external recorder? To me, that makes no sense at all... Why shoot with SCARLET if you're going to abandon the RAW capabilities?

Fast Turn around is FAR more important some days than RAW. Not everyone shoots purely narrative. I do own an F3 w/ sLog and its been providing non stop for a good 9 months. Most projects need fast and inexpensive FAR more than they need RAW. That said the other half of productions, who need the quality, the scarlet can function beautifully on the spot.

Scott, do you know if this recorder or the SoundEffects recorder will record 120 fps or the 300 fps capability of the Epics?

wont do it.

Is anyone using the new 2.61 firmware update with the Epic or Red One? My atoms works with outputs from Sony and panasonic cameras but will not accept Red One or Epic signals? Id this Firmware or a dude unit?

We have the Samurai and the Scarlet with 2.61 and its working, even with auto start/stop. The only problem right now is, that the recorder starts whenever a button like "expanded focus" is pushed. And it doesn't stop recording, when the scarlet stops. So at this point, its unusable. Any news from atomos?
