  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Another taste...

In theory there is a way of doing this and given the merging of stills and motion picture in the semi pro market I wouldn't be surprised to see a solution within a decade.

This sounds fairly limited, doesn't it? Even best case, shooting at 24fps at with a 180 degree shutter, means that your sensor is busy half the time. Assuming that it will take some time for the aperture to adjust to your still setting, and will take some time for it to get back to your motion setting before the next motion frame, your open shutter time available for your still frame is going to be very short. Is that worth all the trouble?

I don't really understand the reasoning for wanting a feature like this. Even if it were possible it just seems pointless. While compositional theory and technical aspects of still and motion are very similar, they are two different disciplines.

Thanks Jim... a wee christmas present for us! Now it may not seem like work to you (even if it is hard work and we are sometimes hard work) but man it is Christmas Eve. Take a break!

If I had to venture a guess I'd say the most likely possibility is a SSD in a smaller form factor. Possibly 1.8" SSD drives, like this one from Sandisk. That's only 72GB though. I don't think anyone has come out with a 128GB one yet, although it won't be long.

Samsung is releasing 128GB Multi-Level Cell SSD drives in the near future that are supposed to be cheaper and faster. Wouldn't it be really cool if you could just plug-in this drive like a CF card into the new RED cameras? :w00t:

I love the fact that it's Christmas morning and there's STILL a few hundred of us lurking around the boards.

I suddenly realized that this site gives me the feeling of Christmas every time I log on. Truly, Jim makes it Christmas all year round!

Thanks, Jim! And Merry Christmas, everybody!

Completely with you on the sentiment. And plus, with it being Christmas morning, I wasn't willing to miss the possibility of there being something special under the red tree.

Thanks for nice Christmas render Jim.

Try and relax this holiday season. Sleep tight. RED is awake.

Jim

You make it sound like RED is some sort of monster ready to unleash fury on the industry...

"Coming soon to a cinema near you... The story of RED... Whilst men sleep across the globe, red lay awake, restless, it began to stir..."

Can one use more than 1 LCD in such basic system,
or a second LCD on a wire ?
I would like to use a bigger display (4.8"),
on camera (with the fixed lens Scarlet),
but it would be estetic overkill, I suppose ?!

So. no grip handle in the Base (3750$) configuration ?! :waaa:

I will use big LCD display for sure, only wish I can choose bigger one instead of of basic small kit one.
With this resolution it is crucial to know where sharp focus is. Definitelly not overkill.
After all who cares how your camera looked like when you shooted those beautifull pictures? Ridiculous.

Cool beans Jim! Happy Holidays to you and thanks for the render!

Pert, I completely absolutely and undeniably agree with having to get the full size LCD, at least the small one but with the highest resolution... no doubt about it. This is in no way shape or form overkill... a 1080p LCD is more like it actually... remember you are recording super high resolutions so the only way to know if you are in perfect focus is to be able to see the info.

The Grip handle was never supposed or expected to be included for only $3,750. But Jacek, don't worry man, you will be utterly flabbergasted once you see what you can do with base Scarlet... there is no doubt about that either.

I think we can expect that many users will be very surprised that to get perfect focus with pro camera is not as instantly easy as with consumer camcorders. Welcome to the world of professional cameras.

LCD is placeholder.

Sorry to ask as you pleased us not to do so, but as Stuart said it's okay if we don't get mad if there is no specific answer I thought I'll try. You said the LCD is a Placeholder. For a Viewfinder?
I just ask as the Scarlet-FAQ said
The complete kit, with power, finder and media module
For me that meant that there is some kind of EVF. Maybe not the BombEVF, but something smaller?

As I want to build a 3D Rig with the fixed one I'd like to know if I need to grab some money more for two bombs (do I sound like a Terrorist here?) to complete my kit.

If you can't say at the moment, there is no hurry. There are nine month till the fixed is available, and that's enough time to worry about that in 6 month or so ;-) But I'd like to know it anyhow

To quote the RED site...

I know, I'm around here since the Day Red had only some Pictures of Racing Cars on their Site. And that some specs may changedoesn't mean that no one at RED knows what they are planing to do... I bet it's the opposite.

And also that's why I said that they don't need to hurry with the Answer if they don't know what they want to do. But I don't think that Jims and REDs Idea is to put "some kind of viewing-stuff" into the package. And that's what I would like to know, when it's possible to say.

Yes they know what they want to do, except that sometimes they change it according to reactions and ideas from reduser forum.
This interactive development is the main difference from other companies.

First plan was pocket camera with fixed lens, Epic and some surprise, then there was huge reaction and as result we have several bodies from both, several mounts, some grips, new line of small primes, Epic X, etc. etc.
Most of it wasn't ever planned. Question is when all items will be ready to sell?

Not to forget mounts for RED from variable metals, offer of uncompressed modules - not cheap but ready to start to develop it. All just because users ask for it.

so if we all stop shouting out what we want and let Jim build what he wants, then we would see a much sooner release date? hehe
