  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New RedCine 1.0.1!!!!!!

I'm running the same setup and have no apps running in the background. The problem I keep having is something will render about half way through and then freeze on a frame for the duration of the clip. I would love this app if only I could get it to work !!!!! update please or help if you know what the issue is..Rob ?

First of all, I feel really silly calling you "Poi." What's your name? : )

Please outline, step by step, what you are doing to render clips.

Start with a Library of just one clip. Pretend like you are talking to somebody who knows absolutely nothing about RED or REDCINE and explain step by step how you are rendering a clip.

This could be hardware, it could be software, or it could be a tiny switch you aren't flipping when you're rendering.

currently drinking: Port Ellen. A closed distillery... every drink is a piece of history. And damn, it's good stuff.

currently playing: Joy Division - Substance

(not sure how wise it is to mix dead whiskey and Joy Division, but there you have it.)

Apple knows about the issues, that's what sucks. Perhaps I will contact some upper level engineers there and see if there is a way to get this worked out for a future OS update. Greg, have you seen the tearing with FCP and Leopard? Maybe they already fixed that issue. I haven't upgraded yet.

Is there a way to switch the graphics card out with the Macbook Pros? I assume there isn't

While you've got them on the line tell them to fix the *(&#@$)!! quicktime gamma issues. It's been 5+ years! I've been able to purge every other apple product from my life except for quicktime and unfortunately I have to keep using it so they might as well fix it.

Could be dangerous Lucas.. Have you seen Control yet? It's a beautifully filmed movie huh..

Steve,

You can try that... but...

Apple writes all their own drivers. NVidia provides a low-level API, and Apple writes the drivers and bundles it into the core. So if you want to contact somebody, you need to contact Apple.

Bottom line - ATI for Apple, NVidia for Windows.

Wait, so you're saying "don't buy a new macbook pro if you intend to use it with redcine", as they're Nvidia based ?

But using bootcamp to install Windows XP on one of these would make it work, wouldn't it ?

Hmm...interesting thought. Lucas would that actually solve anything or is it still an issue with the actual hardware at that point?

Steve

I used a macbook at LART with XP. It was a HUGE problem. I couldn't calibrate the monitor to anything useable. Completely worthless. I was losing about 15% of my blacks/grays and the gamma was WAY off but couldn't be adjusted below 1.

All very troubling at this point. Wonder what new Macbook Pros will be using for graphics card in the next generation of models. I needed to pick up the one currently out because of other projects. Thought it would not be an issue with Redcine or FCP. Back to the drawing board.

Steve

The current Macbook Pro system should work OK with REDCINE, they will just be slow. What about buying a previous model MBP with the ATI X1600 GPU? Might save you some money and will work a bit better. Maybe, I don't know how bad the nVidia performance is in comparison... The ATI X1600 is no speed demon.

The problem with REDCINE is that it won't work at all on the Intel graphics card models. For Nvidia it will be very very slow in 4K on the Nvidia cards thanks to the drivers.

RED ALERT & the QuickTime codec do not use the graphics card (other than to draw the image) so are fine. But if there'a tearing in FCP as Jeremy above talks about then I guess we might have that too, but I haven't seen it myself.

Rob is a Windows Quicktime Codec still in the works?

I was just reading the Red manual (build 11), and page 46 it says :
"The REDCODE RAW QuickTime component permits REDCODE RAW footage to be displayed
on Macintosh OSX or Windows XP personal computers with QuickTime Player V7.0 or higher.
"

Sounds like it's still in the works... (I hope so)
Or is it a typo ?

Fingers crossed here too.

Good info, Rob, thanks. Is there any chance you can use your contact with Apple to suggest they put ATI cards in the new Macbook Pros coming in early 2008? You've clearly been working closely with Apple on all this, and if they're going to listen to anybody...

they need to write drivers that work..
.. putting the "pro" back into Macbook Pro

Agreed!

The problem isn't the hardware, it's the fact that Apple has yet to develop a fully functional driver for nvidia cards.

I vastly prefer Nvidia to ATI in both Windows & Linux.

The more customers complain about Apple's insufficient driver development, the sooner we may see results.

cheers,

jt

I've been whining about that for the last... 10 years. The only thing that's come of it is me buying one PC after another instead.
