My film has been developed and now we need to take it to be telecined where should we take it?

Live in the Hollywood area.

I am a student at Los Angles Film School and i have never worked with film so im not sure what is a good telecine house and a good price to pay. We should be abe to quilify for a student discount.

Whats the best telecine house?

I would suggest trying FotoKem in Burbank.

http://www.fotokem.com/

They offer student discounts and the can handle all aspects of film based workflows.

There is no "best." There are a number of facilities that all produce great work. In no particular order:

Encore
Laser Pacific
Modern Videofilm
FotoKem
Technicolor Hollywood
Post Logic
The Post Group
Level 3 Post
Westwind Media
and a number of others. All of the above are in either Hollywood or Burbank.

Los Angeles is the world center of the industry. Every one of these facilities has the best of the best equipment and talent. As far as pricing, in case you haven't heard, there's a writers strike going on at the moment and all of them (and just about everyone else in the industry, particularly in the television end) are hurting very badly at the moment and there have been a lot of layoffs. Pricing is not exactly going to be at a premium right now.

And BTW, EFilm is not a telecine facility. It is a digital intermediate mastering facility. There is a significant difference in terms of services, formats, equipment, and price.

Mike Most just listed the tip of the iceberg... I think every other grandmother in the Hollywood region has a telecine tucked away in the basement, though it may be a Rank Mk.III...

What transfer machine you use (Spirit, Rank, etc.), what color-correction system the suite uses, with what features (DaVinci, Pogle), to what format (HD-D5, HDCAM, DVCPRO-HD, hard drive, Digi-beta, beta-SP), how much footage you have, if you want a supervised or unsupervised transfer, etc. will all affect the price. You'll be asked about the technical specs for the transfer, 16x9, 4x3, letterboxed, is there sound to be synced-up, do you need dubs to SD tape, do you want a flex file for AVID editing, do you want windows burned into the footage, etc.

...and the talent. Generally this has the greatest affect on price. Of course Grandma is pretty cheap, but she usually gives you all the home brewed wine you can drink.

I've seen some of the stuff Grandma has done. Now I understand, she must have been sampling the wine.

I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for.

Ask around the Film school, see what places others use, ask the instructors their take on some of the houses around town. You are doing the right thing by asking around.

Dirt this is why you should have talked him into shooting with the F950, honestly. Now look what you've gotten yourself into ;)
