  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing WEAPON DRAGON 6k Magnesium

I know some of us are bummed about not being able to afford the upgrade to WEAPON. Red have stated this is their top line camera. Of course we can't all be a part of this top tier.

What does this mean for current RED owners? You stay on Epic. Epic Dragon is one of the best cameras in the world, if not the best. Epic and Scarlet are staying in the RED family. I believe it will be supported for years to come. And I know we won't be left out of future upgrades, that has never happened before, it won't start now.

I hate to be negative... but in my opinion weapon is kinda a fan boy upgrade. The only sellable thing you can take to your client when you ask them for a significant bump in rental price is that it shoots pro res... and that's not worth a huge bump in cost to most clients. Beyond that it's a form factor thing and this wouldn't justify much/ if any rental increase. To be clear, I think it's amazing that Red gives any credit on used gear towards a new purchase but since they do, I'm surprised it's such a conservative amount. If the upgrade cost was more inline, this would be a non issue. BUT, the camera will not fundamentally change the image you are shooting, like epic/scarlet did for red one owners or Dragon does for epic/scarlet owners. These cameras are amazing pieces of tech and super exciting to use but at the end of the day they are tools... and if their function is not significantly changing, what's the justification for an upgrade thats massively expensive but brings little added benefit? I just don't see how you sell that to a client. It would make infinitely more sense to put that 19k to 30k in upgrade money towards buying another epic or epic dragon and doubling your offering to your clients. As a new product, weapon is really exciting but as an upgrade to an epic Dragon, for me atleast, it's a non event. That's just my two cents... as a business owner, I think it's important to make these points.

"For everyone with a Dragon... NAB is gonna be awesome.
For everyone that hasn't upgraded yet.... you are best to get that done before the show.
It will be worth it."

I took these words to heart and upgraded to Scarlet Dragon a few weeks ago for $9500. I was a fool...

If the magnesium weapon can't get upgraded to an 8k sensor, then isn't Red effectively selling us a dead-end camera?

Well, even when you take the bus, you hope the client will pay for the ride!

I don't think you made the wrong move - I think RED did by placing such a low value on the Scarlet-Dragon, which is quite a capable camera itself. It's just kind of crummy to see that they hyped everyone up to change their cameras from MX to Dragon (and the ones who did specifically just made that move last month so they could upgrade to Weapon eventually). RED's devaluation of the Scarlet-Dragon is disappointing, and I'm not alone when I say that the overall offerings for Weapon don't really justify the cost at this point.

+ 1

I would really love some confirmation that the magnesium Weapon will have an upgrade path to the VV cameras somewhere down the line... This will be my first foray from Scarlet into the Epic line of cameras and I'm already anxious over the idea that, despite that massive investment, this body won't be eligible for the next jump...

Good point, but more likely next year at this time when 8K Weapon is actually shipping there will be a program to allow the majority of RED owner's to participate. Otherwise RED is a dead-end company since the bulk of their customers are working men like Ivan Agerton - not celebrity hobbyist or 1%'ers.

I'm a bit underwhelmed by the specs... fps are lower than expected... audio again only 48 Khz... no 4K Prores... no 4K out (?)...

I do like the wireless, automatic sensor cal, 3D LUTs...

Can somebody from RED clarify what the deal is with having to ship the mount in on upgrade and whether Magnesium bodies will get a sensor upgrade option in the future (whether it be 40mm 8K or true 35mm still) ?

Meaning: will the sensor > body > sensor > body > etc cycle stay intact for W Magnesium bodies ?

Thanks.

A bit underwhelmed

A bit underwhelmed

I'm an early adopter, getting a sub-500 R1, Epic -X (sold it), Epic-M, Scarlet-X followed by Dragon M. I am very excited about 8K Vista, but it's out of my price range and far down the road. I dropped a deposit on Weapon magnesium knowing I can cancel and get that refunded. I am hoping to hear more good news about that option to justify the serious cost, which right now I just can't see. A clear and reasonable path to 8K from the magnesium Weapon would probably go a long way to making me stay in the game....maybe. Otherwise I'll stick with Epic Dragons and ride them for all they're worth (which has been considerate). Maybe in a couple years Vista will emerge as obtainable upgrade for all Dragon/Weapon owners. Right now we just don't have enough information, and what we do know doesn't seem as great as what I wish we knew, and that's why I feel a little underwhelmed this time around. Guess I will wait and see how it all shakes out.

ah man, it's just getting better and more expensive too!

not sure if this has been answered but does the "$5000 weapon accessory credit" only apply if you place your deposit during NAB?

again.....

The real QUESTION for me is.....

Will the WEAPON Magnesium have a 6K or similar S35 sensor upgrade option in the future?
Perhaps something like a Dragon2 or similar 6K sensor.

I need to know now, because I'm not sure I would pay to upgrade to WEAPON Magnesium if it is only
the Carbon Fiber WEAPON that will have new sensor upgrade options....!!!

Can someone at RED define what's a 'Weapon Accessory" for that $5,000 credit? Just the weapon-only modules mentioned today? Other modules to be announced in the coming months? Is Media an accessory?
