  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing WEAPON DRAGON 6k Magnesium

Weapon looks like a renters dream....but owners with an Epic Dragon look they have a similar engine under the hood, even if less streamlined/ergonomic, etc...

The renters dream is the Epic MX. Paid itself off easily. I chose not to upgrade, but it is and will be a fantastic camera for just about every facet of production for at least the next 18months or longer. It rents all the time and in the next year I expect it to easily make more in profit than the cost of weapon.

I think folks just need to take a moment to think. Marketing always wants the world to follow its timings, but I'd rather let my camera work and then decide who and how to spend my loot after I've made it. If RED would like to buy me lunch in a year or so to discuss why I should buy their newly (released) camera I'll be more than happy to entertain the conversation.

Love the gear, but I know I can make the same quality content in a lot of ways now.

Magnesium package: $34,500
2 SSDs: $2800
SSD Reader: $195

Total Cost: $37,495

Trade-in Credit (Epic Dragon): $15,500
Accessory Credit: $5,000
Total: $20,500

$37.495 - $20,500 = $16,995 + 8.5% Tax = $18439.58

For what its worth, and even with my previous comments, any upgrade should be applauded. No one else would do that. Its just the baiting thats kinda shady.

The math thing in this thread is kinda rough to see. Pretty sure that if you have to get the calculator out to decide the feasibility of a multi-thousand dollar purchase than its probably not the right choice.

Too expensive! We just finished the upgrade dragon and you must pay the "super" expensive new red weapon 20K...$ : Pleurer:
And I hear that there will be an update 8k last month 2015... I admit that I seriously need to think about staying or not in red : 001_unsure:

The reason why I'm hesitant is because I'm paying $18400+ into a system that will essentially be 2nd tier, possibly end of line if the move is going to be towards VV. Buying into Dragon, I knew I was getting the top, even if it wasn't a CF body.

Yep.

Adding to all the noise. When Red first started they were an indie film-makers dream. Seemingly targeted at people like me. They first posted on the DVX forums where Jarred was recruited and Jim was all enthusiastic about creating a great camera that didn't cost the earth. In the last 8 years their strategy seems to have changed slowly where I feel I'm no longer their target market. 'pro gear costs pro prices' Jim said years later. That certainly wasn't their mantra when they started.

The Red One was a game changer in performance/price, no doubt. It was actually too clunky and impractical for me personally, but Epic-x fixed most of what was bad . It was quite a price hike from a Red One but the upgrade offer was too good to refuse, I was still on board. I just shot my first feature with Epic MX, and I loved using it.

That said, I can't keep up with these prices now, I'm officially off the upgrade path and I don't mind at all. I'll milk the MX for a few more years yet and I thank Red for kicking the industry in the butt and leading the way back in 2007

Today it seems blackmagic could be filling the void that Red did so many years ago. The best price/performance out there. Could be wrong, but that's the way it appears to be going. Red sits right at the top of the tree now with Arri, which is great for them, but my arms can't reach for those apples.

guys no one said red won't continue to make s35 updated sensors...why would they want to cater to a smaller and smaller niche market as they make larger and larger sensors? it makes no sense to end development of s35, and I'm sure the advancements of future products will also come into a s35 realm... but for me personally this is a huge struggle particularly if more stuff isn't cleared up like if going magnesium really means no upgrades...but seems odd cuz most people probably have a lot of s35 glass...i just question if the market will solely embrace vista, surely i would guess its more of a niche and s35 would continue to be the "dominant" format? but who knows...i really don't know what to do, i signed up for the vista but going to be hard to come up with the cash atm so I'm going to think about it and collect cans haha

Brian, How's the demand for your Arri Amira these days for you? I'm looking into the 4k UHD advanced version vs upgrading to Weapon. I've just gotten too many we're going to need "Arri for skin tones" requests the past 6 months to ignore this as an option for me.

I am sad to say this will be the first time I will not actually upgrade our cameras (we've been on the RED ride since the RED one in 2007)... I am little confused that the pioneer of 4K still doesn't have and affordable 4K out option (HDMI 2.0 anyone?)

I feel exactly the same.

Last time deadline was 1st December for the $ 9.5K upgrade price. Then 3 months later Jarred said there is still time until NAB.
Now it says last 10 days for $ 5K credit towards to accessories.Should i find money in a week put deposit or wait few months.I just want to be sure and see the long term plans of RED.I dont have 6 digit dollars in my bank account and i must do my plans calculations precisely since im counting pennies.

Please Jarred say something this is so serious for me.Dollar went skyrocket in my country in last 3 months from 2.2 to 2.7 ,my currency keep losing its worth.Only way to make this upgrade doable for me sell my house or some estates.i dont want to be obsolete and left behind on this game.
