Announcing the RED DSMC2 PRODUCTION MODULE

Hi Swat,

With the new PRODUCTION MODULE. Regarding Pre-Amps, your answere was "Pre-amps - Yes, same specs as REDVOLT Expander."

My questionis, is there any Pre-Amps at all in the PRODUCTION MODULE? I was informed that there is´t any Pre_Amps in it.

Anyone comment on a small audio module?

I've thought about this a fair amount after handling the new module for a bit. I don't think you are looking for a "small audio module".

This new Production Module is notably smaller than the previous REDVOLT Expander and not exactly huge when on the camera.

I think what some people might be looking for is a "simple audio module".

Likely 2X XLR, DC-in, headphone out, and maybe ports HDMI/SDI. The x-factor is getting back into having Genlock, Sync, and CTRL ports - and that is where the rub is as you would be getting back into a module of this size once again. The only real difference is RED crammed all the useful power related ports, USB, and gigabit in here.

In terms of "just" making a simple "go between" the Base Expander with just XLR ports, that might be a thing, but again, you'd be getting up there in size once again especially considering battery plates, which this module has built in to save space.

So circling back, I guess the point I'm making is this IS the small audio module with a host of IO and power options.

For mortals XLR ports, preamps, very small, $1k range. I think RED just doesn’t care for the market here.

I think the people who would be interested in a "small audio module" aren't particularly concerned with having genlock, sync, and ctrl free--I'd go so far as to say many wouldn't even need the SDI accessible. I'm thinking of all the YouTubers who use Red cameras (LinusTechTips, MKBHD) or students, or very small studios (Corridor Digital.)

I don't think that's the case. You're looking for a "simple and very inexpensive" solution rather than small. Just XLR ports becomes not very useful pretty quickly in most situations and even still it would likely be a bit more than $1K. You need quality pre-amps, phantom power, custom board, and shielding, pass through, etc...

It's certainly something 3rd parties could execute, but I think yet again that price point would be real hard to hit.

The OMOD XLR Module is likely the solution you are actually after in this case as it's $2,799 and has some additional features other than XLR, but also has physical controls. Might be worth finding a used one maybe.

This new Production Module is often what I refer to as a "one banger". It's sort of a all in one solution with I/O, Power, and XLR Audio.

RED certainly reads everything here, but again, I think it would somewhat hard to release a very inexpensive option like you describe.

I 100% see the "use case", heck I'd go for it. But I'm also looking at who this module is designed for.

im looking for small! If it costs more ok. The Omod is too large and butt ugly ;)

The Audio module could be just that : an audio module that goes between the brain and what ever module is behind it, 2 cm thick, 2x Ta3 inputs (no physical nor electronic needs to go full XLR), AES, Line, 48v, headphones, controls and level meter. It would be probably around 2'000.-- $ though.

What if someone made a really "small" XLR / audio only interface that connects somewhere else on the camera? For example on the left side pogo? Or maybe it attached like a side plate on the right side? Would either of these connections carry audio info? Because I mean the XLRs would be nice to pop on and off when you need them. So the left side pogo makes a lot of sense. (And since that side carries HDMI, which carries audio, I would think it would be possible. Maybe even with a pass through for attaching other stuff too.

Hmm???

Don’t know if that’s possible but very intriguing idea Spencer, I’d go for something like that or another slimmed down xlr solution in a heartbeat. Production module is sweet but much more than what I need.

I think its time for a small module for audio and I also think it says something that it has not been done

I think that exists, somewhat. Check this out:

So, last week I bought the Sound Devices MixPre-3. (https://www.sounddevices.com/products/recorders/mixpre-3) The preamps are CRAZY good! Now I just need to figure out the best way to make an option that is possibly mountable to my RED setup with a quick release.

Obviously, this is kinda big. But imagine having Sound Devices Kashmir preamps in a really small A-box size setup. That would be dope.

Would definitely be amazing to have a module like this as we already discussed in that other thread.

Sound Devices Preamps are freakin amazing, I thought I read once they considered a module for DSMC 2, but it never made it to development. That’s too bad, but with Teradek’s recent additions to DSMC2 perhaps it’s not too late for them to consider the idea again!
