  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing Scarlet-W

Thanks for this chart Phil. I was looking at an old chart of yours and had the same thought: the Scarlet-W covering S35 Academy 3-perf 16x9 is really nice. Yep, Dragon sensor is what, the first or second best sensor ever built?

It's excellent really. As far as I'm concerned Scarlet-W is solid when it comes to price to performance ratio. I'm a bit nostalgic honestly. It was around this time of year in 2011 I took delivery of my Scarlet-X Mysterium-X, which pretty much became one of the most important cameras I've ever owned.

Dragon sensor tech is very next level. There's a real reason the industry is moderately flocking to it at the moment. Jarred's seen some of what I shot during this last year and it's just truly some of the most fantastic color I and others have seen out of a digital cinema camera to date. And in pretty tricky situations.

These DSMC2 improvements to the Dragon tech make it that much better. The improved Data Rates and REDCODE Compression Ratios are a big, big plus as well.

It's a weird thing because as much as people have bitched about RED over the past few years, their cameras have become pretty much the most flexible digital cinema cameras on the market. But hey, people like to bitch about the weather too. Even when it's good.

That footage you shot literally plays in my house, and in my office, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and I still am blow away by it. I'm not kidding, I turn my head 45 degrees to the left right now as I type this, and there it is playing on the big screen.

And that's not even the good stuff :) Working on getting more of it released in a more public way. Thank you.

There were real issues with RED's camera systems but each iteration has gotten better and imo the DSMC2 body addresses many/all of the physical complaints that dogged the Epic body. I also shot a feature on a RED One at 4.5K on beta firmware and never had a hiccup... The Alexa Mini is a great camera but I think it's funny that most of the Mini set ups I see feature a battery plate on rods, ala old Epic annoyances.

The Flexibility of RAW and Prores on the same card coupled with huge form factor improvements make the DSMC2 ecosystem tough to beat compared to any other camera system. The unity of sensors, as you point out Phil is also not to be underestimated. I work primarily as a DIT and I work with camera systems from all the other manufacturers and they all have their strengths but I think the DSMC2 cameras offer too many features the others can't/won't offer.

I'm really excited the Scarlet-W will be the first RED camera I'll actually own.

Heh heh not to blow smoke up your ass, but apart from being The go-to technical guy, The camera whisperer guy , The lens guy, The guy who's charts are on the walls of almost every studio and rental house , The guy who is a tremendous asset to this community in which you pour countless of hours into, but you also a guy that shoots some incredible stuff. And your best stuff you can't even tell anyone that you shot! Bah.

A combination of any of those 2 is rare.. to do them all, well , my hat is off to you man.

Heh. Probably time that I join the union then :) Been a ghost for too long and even working on those gigs. Weird career path for sure.

Thank you for those kind words. Very humbling.

More flexibility as you can use any module on back, not just V-Lock

Not quite as light as RAVEN, the interchangeable mount and underlying mechanicals make it so.

I guess I was hoping I could figure out a weight difference of two identical setups (Scarlet-W with EF mount vs Raven).

Jarred with hat off ?
congrats Phil, that might indeed be harder to pull off than filming a unicorn !

Thanks Phil for the charts and all the detailed analysis you provide
Thanks Jarred, Jim, Brent and all team RED worldwide for the amazing cameras

What a great re-incarnation of the SCARLET concept !
This camera really nicely fills the gap in what is now a very coherent lineup

and I must say that this particular shade of grey on SCARLET-W body also makes me feel nostalgic

So, concerning high framerates, the Scarlet-W can do @4.5k what the Epic Dragon can do @5k with almost the same compression. It's a nice thought.

So the Scarlet-W is no longer a 6K sensor?
So we can't shoot time-lapse at 6K anymore?
If so that is a bummer. Shame it was not kept the same as the Scarlet-Dragon with 1-12fps at 6K. :001_huh:

Looks incredible.

In the UK the camera with ssd bay and ef mount comes to £12,500 + VAT. It's 100% worth it but it's just that tiny bit too high for me to know I'll get a return on it and I've made some rules for myself after being burned in the past. Budget for the clients I have, not the clients I want. I think I'll keep the Raven plan alive and eventually upgrade the brain to Scarlet down the line...

In a sense I guess it's positioned as the new Epic. The lower cost everyday workhorse Red. Perfect for smaller or indie feature films.

The package with everything is £12500 VAT included. Are you not talking about the scarlet dragon price instead?

Do I go scarlet w route and then sell my MX epic or do I just stay with the epic mx?! I've found 4k is more than enough for me right now!

I think its better to keep it as I don't think you get a good price when selling it. For me I will enjoy my Epic for some time more and keep it as an backup while getting a second red camera.
