Adobe Abandons Creative Suite, Announces Full Switch to Creative Cloud

Remember I am an engineer not a business guy. But if you are curious google deferred revenue reporting which is what apple does. vs Sarbanes Oxley revenue recognition legislation which is what Al mentioned here. Interesting stuff in there. Not sure about Blackmagic.

Simple. Unlike Adobe and Apple, BM is not a public company and it's not even an American company. And as a privately owned company, they aren't required to report income to anyone. Hence BM can do whatever they want:-)

1. What data does Adobe collect when "checking in" once a month?
2. Do they collect a log of when the software has been used?
3. Can I run Premiere on my workstation and Photoshop on my laptop AT THE SAME TIME?
4. Can I run AE on my workstation and AE on my laptop AT THE SAME TIME?

After Effects has this feature. It isn't about lock in in this case. It is about testing resources. It is a lot of work to add new features and make sure the project opens in old versions. That is what is nice about XML/AAF as they are stable exchange formats. If u export an xml of our project you will get all the bins etc open in the old version. Not sure about Lightroom but Photoshop has compatibility modes for sure.

Cheers

Dave

Thanks David. That's sadly a very different thing when you are dealing with complex client situations (which we do often).

It's the difference between being given a Pro Tools / Avid project file from a client and knowing that I'll be able to read it (even if they're on a later version)... versus someone sending me their Adobe project and I find that I can't load it at all.

Also, when you have a group of people working together on a project, you don't want to save XMLs constantly.

We really value whatever work that Maxon, Avid, Autodesk, etc do to enable this feature. Sure, their software evolves - for example, Maya 2014 now supports >2GB project files and that will break backwards compatibility. But they warn you explicitly. And I look forward to having Maya 2014 be able to load projects from 2015, 2016 and beyond.

Having Adobe CC save in a non-backwards compatible format by default seems Microsoftian. Especially when we have no idea what the price will be in the future to rent the app for a month to open the file - or whether Adobe will even allow us to install the app in the future! What if it gets discontinued?

Honestly: I feel like in addition to paying for Creative Cloud, I need to go and start looking for illicit copies of CC so I can stash them on a drive along with my project archive just so that I can be sure that I'll be able to open my project in 20 years' time using a virtual OS image. If your paying customers feel that, it's not a good thing. And I spent a lot of money on legit software! Ouch!

Sorry - but I do feel I am just voicing what a lot of other people in the business have said to me over the past few days. The only people I have spoken to who are happy are the ones who have never paid a cent for Adobe software and plan to just keep using illicit versions - and the other one who plans to use a family member to get the $20/month educational deal permanently. The folks who actually plan to pay for the thing are the ones who are most upset because they are the ones facing the greatest uncertainty.

Thanks for listening, as always.

I assume those 2 questions are answered in the license, but I can check. Nothing nefarious. You can opt in to give us more usage info which is useful for designing features.

We always record feature requests. If this is an important feature for you we will add it to our list and see what we can do. Remember, you can have access to previous versions on the cloud so if you pay for a month you can grab whichever version you need.

Cheers

Dave

Thankyou David, I was under the assumption the old rules applied, which clearly stated you could install on 2 machines, but only use 1 at any given time.

Thank you David. I understand that this is the policy now. What I'm worried about is that Adobe may change its policy in the future. Also, I have no guarantee of future pricing.

Which is why I highly recommend everyone research this thoroughly through the detailed FAQ document as well as contacting Adobe with any areas of question that can have a large impact on your business, especially facilities dealing with a large volume of seats. This is one of those times when everyone needs to be on the same page so the surprises are minimized.

Completely agree Steve, that's exactly why I asked the question initially, because I did read not only the FAQs, but also the Adobe Product License Agreements see clauses (2.1.3 and 2.1.5). I appreciate David giving the answers he did, but they completely contradict the current EULA, I also appreciate your recommendation to read the FAQs, however, I believe there is still a lot of confusion as to the installation of Adobe software (rented or owned) onto a second machine. I personally would like to see the Adobe License Product Agreement updated to reflect what David said- I can run AE on my workstation and on my Laptop at the same time.

I'm sure I'm not the only person with a workflow that involves large render queues that essentially tie up system resources. It seems practical to me that I'm allowed to continue work on an other machine (laptop) running the same software at the same time.

I appreciate your concern, really I do :) ....... However, I ask that you just take a few minutes to really understand what is going on and then make the decision that is right for you and/or your company. ....

Dave

This is exactly what I did when Adobe started playing their games with the PS 13.1 upgrade. First: no new features for clients that paid thousands of dollars for several master suites in advance? Come on, look at what Apple does with FCPX. The accounting argument is just ridiculous. Second: exactly then the registration issue came up and we experienced firsthand what Adobe support means today.
This was when I was looking for alternatives. The web stuff had already gone, there are good alternatives. And Premiere/AE? Well, we have bought several Smoke licences. Happily looking forward to start with them. These are more expensive, but I get service and upgrades. And I don' t have to rent anything (which I will NEVER do, more than 20 years in IT have tought me...).
Thank you for your effort to convince people (strange, that this is even necessary after the beautiful news this week?), but Adobe's way is not mine.

I appreciate your concern, really I do :) I know the Premiere team continues to work really hard making a great product that will bring joy to the people on this board. Premiere Pro CC as the other versions is just the beginning of the great stuff to come. I have never been prouder to work on this product and I will continue to work really hard on it. From my point of view I can make you guys happier than ever with this model as we can finally role out fixes when it makes sense to our users. That really excites me. I understand the frustration that people feel I really do. However, I ask that you just take a few minutes to really understand what is going on and then make the decision that is right for you and/or your company. If you ask questions that we can answer we will, if you vent we will listen. That is what our team has always done. The people on the Premiere team are as motivated as any people I have ever worked with. We welcome your feedback and comments as always.

Thanks

Dave

Thanks Dave,

Support like this make it easier to swallow....
$600 a year is still a decent deal

Holycrap i thought you had to log out to work on the other computer. Can you do some kind of render assist with second matchine?

I appreciate the desire for even more options. I assure you Adobe has heard the feedback. At any rate $20 for one product and $50 for the suite is a good deal. Also we have 30 day trials and the first year special so people can try stuff before making a decision.

But £46 a month in the UK isn't though, is it?

But £46 a month in the UK isn't though, is it?

To be accurate it's £38.11 + VAT. Which, at the present ROI, means we are paying a whole £4 more than our US brothers.

I'd like Adobe to offer a video tools package with PP, AE, Photoshop, Speed Grade, Audition and Prelude. Bundle that lot for £25 a month and throw in Behance and cloud storage and they'll be on to a winner.

Some of us actually have to pay VAT... But I agree there needs to be a production version. I'll never touch Dreamweaver/Flash et al in my life.

Better yet, Premiere should just come with AE, SG, AU and PS.

From the creative cloud FAQ:

Can I use the software I download from Creative Cloud on multiple computers?
Yes, you can use Creative Cloud desktop applications on two computers at once, regardless of operating system, for the individual associated with the Creative Cloud membership. See the product license agreements page for more information.

RED sells a great config :) But in general. If you want full res 5k you need 2 rockets or (I think) one of the new rockets. If you want 1/4 res you just need a good machine. Focus on 16 - 32 gigs of ram and one of our certified GPU cards. Al just posted a bunch on the premiere pro blog.

Thank you for the reply David, and I'm glad Al updated that list as it was not available even a day ago.
Realtime editing of Red RAW has been listed since CS 5.0, yet generic specs which mostly don't work very well have been listed.
I am still not understanding the real world configuration required for realtime editing & compositing Red 5K RAW- simply a 2GB GPU and 2GB RAM/Core?. Doesn't core speed matter and number of cores, what about 1066MHz vs 1600MHz memory...

ex:
If you have an HP Z820 and are running Premiere Pro and After Effects with 5K RAW, what ...
CPU = what GHz s required (ex: XEON with as low as 1.8GHz but QUAD core up to as high as 3.3GHz)
RAM = 16 vs 32 vs 64 GB ... Huge price difference, what does every extra 16GB RAM gain you
GPU = 1 GB DDR5 not enough for 5K? does 2GB DDR3 or DDR5 handle everything or do you need more/faster than 2GB DDR3 for big project files (ex: GTX Titan with 6GB and over 2000 CUDA cores vs Quadro K2000 only 2GB and 384 CUDA cores)
Hard Drives and controller tested: two 7200 rpm in RAID 0 is no way fast enough to edit 5K RAW from my experience so far

BOTTOM LINE: What are the real setups actually used for testing on MAC & PC, and why aren't those configurations widely available
to your own technical support or publicly available?

Two Questions please.

1. We use laptops in the field, there is no internet connection fro many months in our remote work. if we are away in the field for say 12 months and can be up to 24 months, how do we licence software ?

2. In many facilites the machines do not connect to the internet for many reasons. Updates are done viaUSB sticks or portable disks. This could be a small network say 4 to 8 machines or very large 10's of machines. Ive read the FAQ's. How do we licence machines ?

thanks,

Thanks For always being patient with us in our most frustrating times. Your reply is very heart warming, We'll give CC a chance. But I'll personally wait till others have tried it for a few months before I'll subscribe. I'll check out the 30 day demo.
My personal concern is not the subscription or cost of subscription, but rather the value for subscription.

I am very aware that adobe values my suggestions so here goes.
Times are changing really fast, the way in which we work today and the technology we use is very different. I do understand that from the point of view of a creative software engineer like yourself you want to be able to deliver solutions for the ever changing creative climate, but the last thing you want is to be bogged down by accounting and administrative or bueareaucratic Red-tape. Fair enough

1.Why are Prelude, PPro, and Media Encoder separate applications? Going forward should they really be?
2. Dynamic link has never ever worked as promised, Adobe should take a second look at this architecture redesign and re-engineer it. An Adobe timeline in any product should be seamlessly interoperable, thats what a dynamic link should be. with one click a PPRo timeline should open seamlessly in AE. in Another click that same time line should open in Audition, then Encore.
3. The lumetri color engine along with Speedgrade tools should in PreLude, PPRO, AE, ENCORE, PS and whatever new iteration you are developing.
