  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

7.0 touch screen

Several 7 were on display at recent trade shows across Europe.

They look very nice : thiner than the 5, square design with black on black front logo, with what looked like both a better tactile response and better latitude than the 5.
The resolution jump from 800 × 480 to 1920 x 1136 will certainly be super useful to frame and focus your shots.

Always felt the 9 was too big for my use but this one feels just right... I agree it is strange to phase out the 5 as it is still very useful for small setups, would even wish there was a 3 inch myself sometimes :-)

here are a few picts (sorry iPhone images) with a some 7 inch screens... (sorry except the first one showing both 5 and 7 inch at full brightness, the other picts were not shot to specifically show the 7 inch in itself but could give you some indication as to it's look and size)

Thank you for that last picture Mikael. That's very informative in terms of a size comparison.

I've been considering really, really hard to get rid of my 5.0" LCD Touch for the 7.0". The 5.0" is super useful for travel and small setups, but the 7.0" might be the happy middle I'm looking for between the 9.0" and 5.0". The extra resolution is very welcomed over here.

One thing I think is interesting is Red has redesigned the hinge a bit. I've seen plenty of people pick their cameras up from the hinge on the 5.0" and 9.0", which I'm not totally sure it was designed to do. The 7.0" seems to be less "grabby". I'll have to take a look at one in LA to really do an A/B comparison and decide. Really curious about the flip implementation as well.

In my opinion . If they bought 10k monitors there getting screwed on the price! To dam near double the price is ridiculous. American greed at its finest. At best at best their paying 500 pre screen. Rant is over.

Personally, I am a bit skeptical of the 10,000 unit order scenario. Is it being suggested that RED is warehousing 10,000 units of each of its various accessories to accommodate orders going forward for years?

I am sure there are reasons for the pricing - it is a well-built, well-designed HD touchscreen, perfectly integrated into the RED ecosystem. And we have moved what, 4 years (?), into the future since the 5" was offered. Yes, other high quality screens are cheaper but they don't control the camera. You choose what works best for you.

Maybe they'll re-offer the 5" at 1280 x 720.

As the 7 is both finer and larger while the hinge is more compact it didn't felt to me like it would be a good idea to grab the camera using that as a handle at all...

The flip is enabled from the camera monitor settings like before but on the 7 inch is does a real 180 degree and not just a mirror like on the 5 inch... So most probably the trick is happening in screen and not in camera...

Also think it way to much... you can buy an odessy 7Q with SSD's for that money. I think red is losing their original "lets shake up the market and others are selling overpriced stuff" attitude and becoming a kind of arri with overpriced accesory which don't line up with current prices of alot of equipment going down.

If people are still complaining about how expensive RED assceroies are, they should look into the price of ALEXA assceroies to compare. ;)

I played with it at IBC and then at Cinec, just to be sure... I did ordered as soon as it became available... As I ditched the 5" long ago, mostly do to my poor vision issues, and Loved the 9" ever since it came out, and while it is indeed too big at times, I do NOT care, I simply LOVE the 9", and I can say that the 7" is a great compromise from the 5" to the 9", I love the new design far better too, but at the end of the day, I am just not YET sure I'll ditch the 9" for it as I ditched the 5" for the 9"... ;)

PS: For BIGGER images... Open in NEW Window.

Just couple of quick snap shots taken at IBC by my friend Stefano Ceccon girl... This gives you abetter idea of the mounting hinge piece on bottom.

RED has always relied on the 'razor blade' model. Sell the razor for cheap, make the money on the razor blades. Even their Primes which were a bargain were pretty serious profit generators.

I checked out the 7" as well. it's an amazingly sweet screen. I'd switch it with my 5" in a heartbeat if it would be more in my price range.
Maybe they are updating the 5" to become even lighter. Who knows.
I have no clue how "fair" the pricing on the screen is, but I believe there is a good reason for their price point. I don't believe that RED would just up the profit margin extremely on one single product. It's probably similar in relation to the other screens. Well who knows. But either way, it's just too steep for my taste. Not a screen for the true indie cinematographer.

I still feel that, whilst the 7" is sweet and I'll get one, that current 5", if not refreshed, will sell for a premium.

Come to think of it, the 5" will likely sell for a premium, anyway...

Thank you very much

Fury

I was trying to purchase the 5" and had it set up on my quote, then was told it was out of stock when I went to make the purchase. Really wish my rep would have told me this was going to be discontinued when he saw it on my quote.

If anyone is selling their 5", please PM me. I will buy it.
