brain is the brain, sub-10k is including card, so of course ssd, and monitor??? Not sure on power.

I love that the President of Red is still dropping product info at 2 am for us die hards. One reason why I love this company :) Thanks Jarred!

One thing worries me though...

If this has the weapon body and will be eligible for upgrade to a next generation sensor after Dragon then what about us with an Epic Dragon? I mean, from what I gathered, the only way for us to get a next gen sensor is to upgrade to Weapon AND upgrade to the new sensor, which would cost as much as just buying a new camera. That's kind of a strange handling of the Dragon family if it happens.
It would mean that if we with an Epic Dragon would want to get new sensor tech, it would probably be through selling our Epic Dragon and getting a Raven, which in many aspects is a downgrade of our equipment, just to "stay in the game."

All things point to Epic Dragon being the end of the line, whatever has been said that it's "part of the Dragon family". In my opinion, if a next gen sensor is being developed, it should also be made avalible to Epic Dragon owners. It would be really strange if Raven owners continue on together with Weapon owners and Epic Dragon owners who don't own a castle and a bank would be left behind with an only option to downgrade to Raven.

Either that or whenever a new sensor is avalible, the weapon upgrade cost might be lower than it is now or put at a discount in order to push Epic Owners into weapon territory.
Personally I would be happy if Red released a Weapon upgrade that isn't carbon, doesn't have ProRes and is just a weapon and board upgrade of the current Epic in order to have it ready for a next gen sensor.

I think there's a mega huge thing you're missing Christoffer. Weapon tech (and I guess we can say Raven tech now) in the newly officially described DSMC² is 2015 body technology. Processing power, boards, and importantly bandwidth have advanced much since the 2009-ish OG DSMC tech. I have a feeling we'll be seeing RED explore this DSMC² form factor for some time to come as well.

Remember the sensor upgrade for OG DSMC from Mysterium-X was Dragon. We are on the body upgrade cycle now. Sometime in the future there's likely going to be a new sensor for the newer style bodies.

RED has stated if you own a Dragon camera of any sort you will have a future path, whatever that is. That new sensor tech could be anywhere between 1-4 years away (though I strongly doubt 4 years). Removing ProRes isn't going to be a huge dollar saver, but perhaps RED has something up their sleeves outside of the Weapon MG and CF/Forged options.

Non-exchangeable lens mount. Non exchangeable mag reader/writer = brain only.

See jarreds last posts... :)

Haven't found that post yet... so much happening here on Late Night that they get lost in the amazement. Can't imagine what it will be like when the rest of the world wakes up.

It's funny. I never seriously considered Red before. It was way above what I could afford and so I didn't even bother looking into it. Then the station I work for happened to have someone from Red come by to demo some stuff. I fell in love with the image I was seeing then did some more research, downloaded some R3D clips, and fell in love HARD with that.

Started looking at the used marketplace and saw some possibilities. Started lurking on here right when the initial teases for the Raven began coming out.

Now I feel like I'm on the ground floor of something tremendously exciting. Is this what I've been missing this whole time? Because this is pretty fun.

Bad news about the EF mount: not as much compatibility as Sony E. Good news: lots of third party manufacturers make EF lenses, including Zeiss; also, you can adapt Leica R to EF easily (not so to Nikon F).

But who is to say that Raven cannot have other mounts in future? It's an excellent product already, and I think everyone agrees.

EF makes sense for the market they're aiming for, right? I'm happy with it.

Where is the magic for the price? Brain only: 5950, screen: 1500, card: 850, minimag module: 1500, redstation: 200, redvolt module: 1150, one redvolt: 350. It's 11500$. And ready-to-shoot raven is sub-10000.

Yeah, I'm being nerdy and have a spreadsheet going already and I can't quite work it below 10K. I'm new to this, though, so there are probably ways of saving money in the Red ecosystem that I don't know about yet.

So we got Raven in at $5950 for just the Brain. 5:1 Compression at 4k 23.98 fps on a Weapon-esque (sans interchangeable mount) Body Form Factor.

The Raven doesn't replace Scarlet, It's a new category in our line up. Raven is a younger, hungrier, more "spirited" member of the RED family with a bit of a chip on his shoulder ready to take on the entire sub-$10k market with images that you will be incredibly proud of.

it is a real Dragon sensor with real Dragon Pixels. So 20.48mm wide, a bit shy of Academy 35mm and APS-C. All your APS-C / S35 lenses should cover.

Not much surprise. The Raven is to Weapon as Scarlet was to Epic... albeit with a few safe guards to keep weapon owners happier than Epic owners when the scarlet was announced. I think despite Red's efforts Raven still cuts into Scarlet dragon territory big time... Wonder if there are any upgrade paths for the Dragon owners who held out?

Here's a quick summary of what just happened with Jarred and his late night Raven info:

Raven is RED's new entry level digital cinema camera. It will be $5950 for just the camera Brain, release date unknown as of yet. However, that does include a fixed SSD Media Bay as well as the fixed Canon EF Mount. There hasn't been other news regarding other mounts just yet, but more info will likely spill out of Jarred's insomnia or during the official announcement on the 25th (wait was tonight the official announcement?). RED Raven features a 4K Dragon sensor with a width 20.48mm that is capable of up to 120fps 4K recording and is part of the "DSMC²" family style of camera body along with Weapon, which likely means Raven will be compatible with the same accessories. RED RAVEN is the lightest weight camera body in the DSMC² family.

A modest shooting package with 120GB MINI-MAGs, the new 4.7" LCD Touch, and battery solution can likely be had for under $10k.

Even this limited info deserves its own thread Phil.

The sensor is an exact quarter slice of the 8K Dragon then? Neat. I do hope we see more of an integrated package, with an alternate ecosystem of accessories, makes sense for the sub-$10k market.

Will do once the official info is out (in case anything changes or more news drops) and a new sub-forum exists (if that happens).
