  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K?

At some point you need to decide who you believe will deliver the future. The company with the vision, or the company that follows the vision. Who is ahead and who is behind?
Jim, where does it all end? If I watch a movie on the typical theatre screen or at home on a humungous flat screen, when will an increase in resolution be meaningless? I suppose camera innovations will then go in other directions such as size and weight, maybe 3D. At what size will the "resolution war" call a truce? 8K? I don't know but there must be a limit. Maybe the innovations will then all be focused on the POST part. Do you think we will need 16K? What for? The human eye imposes certain limitations, when will we hit those?

So nab is over you promised us scarlet-d specs. And nothing. Our company is ready to make a red purchase but can't make an informed decision without all the information

Isn't workflow the next big thing? I'd love for it to be smooth as butter someday soon.

I think once the RedRocket-X cards start shipping and if .RED encoding can be accelerated by that we're going to see a new game changer. And then if/when .RED is supported by 3rd parties NLEs and other suites....

Well. I only see amazing workflow enhancements there.

It's smooth as butter right now!

You can edit R3D's natively in Premiere CS6...just bring 'em in, toss them on a timeline and start editing...no transcoding, no BS. And you can access the RAW metadata parameters easily within Premiere...you don't even need to use RED-Cine-X if you aren't transcoding to some other format. You don't need a RED Rocket if you are willing to work in 1/4 or 1/8 res while editing...I do it all the time on a stock 17" MBP i7. Post couldn't be any simpler on RED footage if you follow the path of least resistance. If you are editing in something other than Premiere, you need to make some accommodations, but it is still pretty easy.

Where does it all end?
It doesn't ever end. Read the book of Ecclesiastes. Or as the old MTV commercial used to say, "Too much is NEVER enough." The human soul is LONGING for fulfillment that it incorrectly THINKS it can find in various avenues of self-gratification--from the simple and innocent to the base and carnal. But as long as that insatiable desire is there... the ideas of more, bigger, better, stronger, faster, will always be the ever elusive goal. As The Rolling Stones sing, "I can't get no satisfaction." That is the plight of man on his own.

In technological terms (and more what you were probably asking), a retina display, as Apple has helped define it, is where the pixels are so tight on screen that your retina cannot perceive it and you perceive continuous tone that mimics the real world. Depending on how far away you sit from the screen and how big the screen is, I think 4K is pretty close to a retina display. 8K seems like it would simply be for larger screens.

Of course! Jarred and I fly the Octocopter as much as we can inside Stage 4.

The last time... I flew the copter and Jarred flew the camera.

Jim

Do you fly that yourself?

Saw a picture of the two octocopters... one of them looks like tex upside down with propellers. Jarred may want to stay away from that one. '-)

Nice work Jim and co., can you please make a 5K cam the size of a matchbox for my quadcopter?...the whole unit needs to also "fly" underwater to 1000mtrs.....I can wait a few years...thanks

Great, just wanted to confirm my understanding that the new Octocopter flight systems have made it much easier to enter to this world. Have same sort of plans myself, and have spent time learning to fly with simulators. Epic makes all sort of dreams true, not only those which have to do with the image quality...
