  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K?

Well said, Jim.

As someone who has actually finished a 4K film, BELIEVE ME when I say, you want to start with 6K acquisition, not 4K acquisition.

Jim, stoked for Dragon and RR. Thank you guys!!! Do you know when Adobe will add a 6k timeline to Premiere Pro to tame the Dragon?

Great points as always Jim, my only small gripe is how you're pushing sensor size. That's an issue for a LOT of great classic glass, especially at the wide end.

I think there's a market for a RED, or RED-type camera, which pushes sensor size down, not up - which has 6K *in Academy S35* - and even moreso, something that has 4K in S16. That would give a new lease of life to a lot of lovely cheap S16 glass.

Think about it will ya? Digital cameras come and go (or get upgraded if it's a RED :) ) at breakneck speed these days - but good glass is good glass forever. Help us use it. I know there are tradeoffs with photosite size, and ability of all lenses to resolve usefully at those sizes, but still...

Mike

No Jim you are on the right path move towards super large format and super light sensitive and accelerate from there.

Adobe is good for 10k right now...
just have to make a custom preset

Agree, It's hard to understand how important downsizing is until you don't do it, as when staying in native resolution then your debayer, noise, lens resolution, keys and overall picture quality all of a sudden becomes very real.

I have to admit that I am having a ton of fun with an EPIC DRAGON on an Octo-copter.

Jim

And we all know you built this camera for yourself anyway...
Thanks for sharing it with us.

Quit teasing.

Hey Jim, any chance you can get the engineers to squeeze out 6k-25p from Scarlet Dragon (if not full frame, then WS and/or ANA)? I know, 'give 'em an inch' or 'mountain of gold', but you can't blame me for asking.

We have things in the works you wouldn't believe...

Jim
Sony, and Microsoft need some advice from you Jarred. The gaming industry could really have 4k in the future with real life scenes and characters which you can control. For example, a cinematographer filming multiple scenes for a action game in the future on the Red Camera and then programmers can do some serious coding. It's really impossible if you think about it but what can you say, a Red camera was impossible in my head 10 years ago but you made impossible into possible.

I was reflecting on NAB, RED and all things 4K on the red-eye (I think that constitutes a pun) back to NYC this AM - I realized that I WAS WRONG.

The one thing that really, really struck me was looking at all the 4K displays. I've been looking at 4K (and 5K) - downressed to 2K on a 16 foot screen with a color-caligrated DI projector for years now. Almost every day. And sure, upon occasion, I have seen 4K projected in 4K - in a theatre - on a big screen - and it is awesome.

BUT ... I was actually shocked that I honestly think ... I would MUCH rather watch 4K content on an 84" 4K TV than 2K on a 40 foot screen.

I love "cinema". But to me ... the "cinematic experience" = being drawn into a world and a story through moving images.

I kept thinking, watching content on the various 4K displays on parade at NAB ... "this is more cinematic to me than almost every movie experience of watching films in NYC with the exception of watching a feature film at the Ziegfeld."

While I've been shaking the 4K pom-poms hard since 2006 when I put deposits down on ELVIS and BOND - and cheerleading RED every step of the way - to be very honest ... I sincereley underestimated the reality of 4K. And I also actually underestimated RED.

4K is so very much bigger and better than I thought.

And RED as a company, IMO, has really, really changed for the better. The wild, crazy, rebellious teenager has grown up.

Strolling around the RED booth this year looking at badges of highly engaged, serious folks ... "Intel", "Samsung", "Warner Brothers", "Verizon", etc. etc. - a very long way from that little tent full of 'scammers" at NAB 2006.

A serious heart-felt BRAVO to Jim and every single person that works at RED.

For people who didn't attend NAB, there were two 'choppers on display at Red's booth:

Hey Jim, why not develop a RED branded Octo-copter? I would love to upgrade from my AR.Drone2 flying a GoPro and fly my Epic instead (pre-ordered my Dragon upgrade on Monday). Fly RED all the way!

BTW, I thought the new Red Motion Mount is a MAJOR development. Congratulations and thank you!

Today I made a decision to buy the camera of my dreams, the ONE, the Epic Dragon. As I pressed the "buy it now" button, a flood of memories, emotions and adrenaline went through me, as I've been waiting and working for a very long time for this. Thank You Jim for making it possible with RED for people like me to have a chance to shoot 6K RAW. When you say it's just the start, I believe you, but you better make the next camera pretty awesome, because right now I can't even imagine how a camera could be better than an Epic Dragon!

I kind of think of the monochrome as a early representation of what you get for 6k (since the monochrome has no debayer). I find I never shoot at 4k even when I'm going to a 2k di ... the 5k picture is ALWAYS better. I think people that are thinking that 5k is ok for a 4k dcp, and they will not use the 6k, will be in for a surprise. I think people will end up loving the 6k and shooting in 6k, no matter what the final is.

We entered the market way back when with a 4K camera. Our thinking was that 1080P was not good enough to replace film. We were right apparently... 7 years later.

What we learned along the way was that while 4K acquisition was certainly better than 1080P... it was not ideal.

A 4K finish from a bayer pattern sensor (what everyone does) begs for more captured resolution than 4K. A 1080P sensor (1920x1080) does not fill up a 1080P box. A 4K sensor also does not fill up a 4K box.

Our M-X sensor captured 4.5K in a RED ONE and 5K in an EPIC-X (or EPIC-M). Much better. The 4K box was almost full. 6K... the 4K box is overflowing.

Going forward, we realize that down-rezzing has a HUGE advantage to final output. Hence the 6K Dragon.

Not only do you have the option to recompose, stabilize, and zoom... the idea of down-rezzing gives a much better final output to a 4K delivery. It lowers noise. You get apparent sharpness without sharpening.

So while the others have joined the party... they have entered where we were 7 years ago. They have thrown the ball to where the receiver was... not where he is.

At some point you need to decide who you believe will deliver the future. The company with the vision, or the company that follows the vision. Who is ahead and who is behind?

If the company with the vision also happens to embrace their customers at all costs (upgrades instead of all new cameras)... you win every which way you look at it.

The choice is yours...

Felt the same with my Quadcopter, a Xaircraft x650 custom made, with a Gopro...Until it did a "Filght" on me. Lower back engine failure and I was struggling to bring it down, safely- shooting in a golf course. Luckily no one was injured and only minor damage. If it was with my Epic X Lilau, i think if I saw it go down like I saw my quad I would have a heart attack...

I'm 100% sure Dragon is the way to go and a leap forward for the industry. Thank you Jim and Red team for all you guys have done for the industry and for us Red costumers. You guys are pioneers. Some of us are in remote places "pioneering" ourselves, showing our own market what Red, 4K ,5k,6k is all about. Over here, the local market is small, there's no consideration about quality, and its up to us to show them the differences. I'm not making much money with my Epic, but I'm gradually changing people's perception over here. Its not about the money, anyway, at least for me: its about delivering the best material I can, about improving myself and about helping to push this place forward. Its about passion. I'll only be able, at the current price, to upgrade to Dragon in 4 or 5 months, but I'm grateful for being able to do so.

Thank you Jim, Red team, and keep pushing forward!
