  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

10 Scarlet Questions with Joseph Hutson... Take 2.

I have one question that I didn't think to ask until now... so I do apologize. I heard there are issues w/ the smallhd dp6 with red1 when going hdmi. I have the slr(hdmi only) version and didn't get the upgraded sdi out/in one. But now I see that the new RED 5.0 screen will incorporate touch screen focusing on the fixed version of Scarlet, or so I thought (I'm getting the fixed version first :), because of this feature alone if this is the case). So my question is: is this true. If it is, I will sell the DP6 right now!

As you know I shoot a lot of travel, sports, wildlife and documentaries which have the same logistical and optical requirements you described. I did tons of that with Red One from 2007 to this year. What's my approach to that type of shooting with Epic and Scarlet? My usual kit will be a fixed lens Scarlet with 3rd party wide converter and 2x extender, lots of Red Volt batteries, several SSD cards, short shotgun mic, a Miller Compass 25 head/Solo CF sticks combo, and a small Cine Saddle.

When I need faster frame rates and/or higher resolutions than 3k I'll take along an Epic X with the electronic mounts and lenses I need - either Red electronic lenses, Canon lenses, or Nikon lenses (or a combo of those), and multiple electronic mounts and quick-change them in the field as needed.

For mobile genres like you described I frequently work alone but occasionally have one assistant along. We either hike in the stuff via backpacks or when appropriate we use mountain bikes towing small cargo trailers containing the equipment. To get there we often use a 4x4 truck, then a 4x4 ATV, setup a base camp, then hike in using backpacks.

Other times I produce/direct/DP much larger crews (10 to 80) shooting more stationary genres (music events, etc.). Our setups for Epic and Scarlet will basically be the same for that though - lightweight mobile Scarlet Fixed and Epic X with electronic lenses.

Me and my crews work in some of the most demanding and dangerous mobile work done by anyone. When planned right, and done by experienced pros like you and me, mobile non-hardlined EFP and hybrid style production with Epic is a breeze - and will be the same with Scarlet.

My good friends at Red need to get a Fixed Scarlet in my hands for some field testing, and then I'll be able to shed some light on the broad capabilities of the camera for mobile genre production. After all, I was in the Red "family" long before basically everyone here, except just a few members of Red Team.

I Really want a job working for you :)

A question when you have a chance:

Will the RED "mini PL" mount actually be able to mount current 16mm and Super16mm PL mount lenses (primes, zooms, etc)? If not, is there a future option proposed to put a standard PL mount on the 2/3" Scarlet's to accommodate such lenses (will it be physically possible)? Likewise, do you foresee the ability to even mount current used arri b-mount lenses with an adapter, etc)

Thanks.

I expect Scarlet Fever to result in a rash of good looking bad indies... is there a button where it will automatically shut down when exposed to bad acting and story?

Of course, then again the true beauty is that Red will deliver a camera that enables some to make the great movies no one believed they could. There might be some people out there that creates a true masterpiece who never would have gotten the chance otherwise. Of course the camera isn't everything, but from experience I know that quality opens the eyes of many distributors compared to a good story with bad images... distributers aren't artist most of the times.

Hi david
thanks for the message
I wonder if the mini prime will be like 50mm, 85mm 100 macro etc.. that would be great than. right now I think there,s only 16mm, 24mm etc.

That would be great if people can give exemple of great lenses not that expensive that can work well for the Scarlet. Everyone is talking about PL mount this and that but never exemple of lenses. That would be great for you guys to share. Macro lenses, primes etc.. that don't cost 4k each :)
thanks

Nevermind my question about scarlet having rack focus like the epic. Just found the post from Jarred saying it will so selling the dp6 NOW! Bye Bye DP6!

I think this is a very good point. I should refrain from any rush judgements till I've had a chance to see how it holds up. I had hoped to do away with wide angle adapters and tele-adapters with a nice set of canon zooms, but we'll see. After the end result is the image I'm after, and I'm sure a red base will be the best option for me to start from. Although I'd like the idea of joseph (when you appeared to be a broke student) to be one of the first, I agree, it would be nice if they got you a camera to field test! I'd volunteer for a 2nd test role do the scenic value, and extremes of my locations (much like yours), but lack the real technical specifics to carry out that role. Your time and effort here steve also should be noted when considering to give a scarlet too! My contributions on this forum might merit me a lens cap to test only after paid in full! :)

BTW, by your photo, you look like you can haul a red-one and a box of primes up everest! I do ok with a fixed scarlet and box of twinkies.

There are aftermarket C-mount to Arri B mount adapters out there, though I expect they are pretty rare these days. I would prefer a standard Arri PL mount option myself. The mini-Red mount is not standard PL.

Here are your ideal Canon zooms for Scarlet.

The Mini-PL mount is indeed a smaller version of the PL, normal PL lenses, 16mm or 35mm will not fit the Mini-PL mount. There will be a "normal" PL MOUNT for the Scarlet to use regular PL lenses on Scarlet.

So far the Zunow is hard to beat on the wide side of things... It's pricey though. There are a ton of them though and we have gotten most of them we could.. but a general rule of thumb is that if its over $800 its excellent... if its over $300 most people will be very happy with it, and the $100 ebay single element specials will disappoint unless you are going for the high CA, high distortion, screwed-up-image look.

Good news on the off-the-shelf Zunows!

Price is not bad if you say they work well - meaning ok in the corners, minimal barrel distortion, CA, and portholing/vignetting. I assume you're talking about this one used with a 82-->77 step-down:

Wide zoom-through: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=727946&is=REG

They also make a wide non-zoom-through that is much less: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=689706&is=REG

And a 1.75 tele: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/727956-REG/Zunow_THV_175_TCX_175_Tele_Converter.html

So these would be much more convenient to use if the bayonet mount version (for Sony EX) would fit. Or if you could talk them into making a clamp-on Scarlet Fixed version. Since they are made in northern Japan I assume production is disrupted, and your purchase of existing stock warrants some favors...

Or maybe since you say you've already "gotten most of them we could" you already have plans? Such as: Package? Mods for Scarlet Fixed - like clamp-on? Beta testing by Gibby?

Thanks. Good to have this confirmed.

Good to know, thanks for posting those links. Curious to see what Century/Schneider will have to offer.

Jarred
"mini" never really kicked in, none standard, why coming back to it ?
I still shiver when I see mini XLRs on my Red.
Cheers

mini XLR's i never had a problem with.. those stupid mini BNC's on the other hand... I'll be the first one to put my hand up and admit that was a mistake. There was no good reason for those.

The Mini-PL mount makes perfect sense on a 2/3" camera though.. when you see the size and weight you can save, plus side by side for 3D, and still get the mechanics, quality optics and ease of use its a no-brainer. And if you don't like it.. you can change it :)

David, Those lens are nice, but rather pricy. I would not take the chances I do to get great shots, and often I don't have time to PROPERLY put my gear away after changing lenses. A lot of what I do is following action around, which is usually very intense situation during wildlife captures etc, where there is no time to stop what is going to change lenses. If I don't keep up with the action, the action will get me! Honestly I'd destroy that lens in a week. I'm very limited on space to even keep a pelican case handy.

An image to describe a not so unusual day at work for a series I made for Animal Planet. This is an aborted rhino capture... keep in mind that really pissed off rhino is lifting a 500kg box, and six of us on top about foot of the ground with her head (me with the camera). The next time we tried to capture her, she bolted 1000 meters up steep mountain with all of us desperately running after her on foot.
