  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1.8" SSD Module

Correct... mag sticks out.

Brook, top loading anything is horrible.. not only does it restrict rail systems etc. on top of the camera but just begs for moisture.

I do like the E-ink idea.. i have a few WD drives that have them and its great ( when they work ) Too late in the game to add those to these though.

Remember, the top-loading quote was a part of a longer sentence... and was immediately followed by "not ideal" and a better option [rotate the mag 90˚ so it slides in completely from the side] in my mind. Gotta present the bad option to make the good one seem better. :)

...consider either a top-loading design [not ideal] or moving the connectors from the "end" of the mag to the "side" of the mag and load the magazine in a vertical orientation from the side of the camera.

:)

I agree with Michael, it would be cool if there was a side 1.8" SSD module to take the place of the CF side module on the brains. I don't know if the brain is deep enough from front to back to house the 1.8" SSD, but if it was that would be a great alternative also.

But just so it doesn't seem like I'm complaining, I LOVE THIS MODULE TOO! When the Epic accessories list first came out, this is what excited me the most. I'll never use CF cards again.

heh heh heh :)

as for max. REDCODE, we are still doing write optimizations and wont know until they are done what the top rates are.

Jarred, what are you not telling us? Side module maybe? Come on man spill the beans!

Sorry if My Question Is off topic :
Is the 1.8'' or 2.5'' SSD reader can be used to offload other tape of formats like what Alexa record on 2.5'' codex SSD or what sony camera record on 1.8'' SSD?

A write-protect switch![!!!!!!]

I think it's a viable replacement for the CF Module.

Why can't it be an option for people who do not wish to grow the camera longer?

DSMC/Stills people who still want high speed storage.

I like both of these ideas. Although I suspect that this module would be too large to mount where the side CF module is.

1500 for 128 GB? A bit pricey, eh?
If that's an SLC SSD, not at all pricey. And even if it's an MLC one, fast 1.8" 128GB MLC SSDs can easily cost $600 or more in retail.

Although it's kinda awkward to have media sticking out like this, the fact that lossless recording 1.8" SSD is too large to fit in the camera is totally cool.

For the future - side module definitely.

eInk-style persistent displays that show roll number and used/remaining capacity.
A write-protect switch![!!!!!!]
A retracting dust cover for the connection interface.

+1

Too late in the game to add those to these though.

No problem. Future models then.

Nice atitude. thats like someone commenting at your screening "man I hope this is not the final cut is it? " just rude dude.

I for one want you to list the "10 to 15 ways it will get hit during shooting"

I promise my A'C's will have a remedy for all of them.

@ Jarred - this is great stuff and how exciting its all working. Man the "live" EPIC is so much sexier than the renders.

Sorry, I forgot that the only remarks allowed are "wow, awsome" and the rest!

IMHO it is a valid concern, thats why I asked.

Hey Jarred...
Brook had a couple of good thoughts there. It would be worth considering them, if the design is not locked down already.
Write protect! Yes, please...
A little display would be a nice treat. I'm sure there are cost and technology issues there, but it would be cool if it could happen, as it would be another visual aid to the ACs and DITs.
In terms of the sticking-out-of-the-side issue, what if it were side loaded but the module was narrower by the amount the card sticks out, and there was a small hinged cover (think rear card cover on an HVX-200) that closes over the actual media and protects it. Made out of metal like (presumably) the rest of the module? I wonder if the mag is already as wide (or more) as a module though. In that case, that would make the module fatter than the other modules, yes? So perhaps...
Top load the mag and make the module shorter, then have the hinged cover keep the module profile identical height to the other modules when it is closed.
Think about it, Red Team. Could be a good improvement...
Cheers,
Harry

Stop it, let's keep it positive here! Remarks of criticism are cool. So are wow, awesome and whatever.
When you got a response, respect that and keep the positive flow going! :emote_hippie:

Oh, and the new SSD media looks totally awesome. Some valid concerns here, but nothing that is game breaker. About it being pricey -- no, it isn't. Sure, you can get a run-of-the-mill 128GB SSD on the market for around 600$. But as Jarred implied, their docking capability just plain sucks. Besides, their rates are often not consistent enough in bursts to be called "reliable" (geez do I know, I get to do tests on this kind of gear back and forth and they seem to break whenever I plug one in and out >.<)

:beatdeadhorse5:

You can get a run-of-the-mill 128GB MLC SSD for less than $300 over here in Finland, and I'm sure US retail prices are lower. However, really fast MLC drives can cost double that. SLC drives are quite a lot more expensive.

This would work except for when you needed to mount anything to the top of the camera, which I would think would be often enough to make it problematic.

Indeed it would, Robert. Top mounting bad... ;)
After posting, I realized that the first thought I had was better. Leave the card side-loaded and have the hinged cover make the module wider. Who cares? The module is already effectively wider because the card sticks out, so just make a hinged cover to protect the card...
Cheers,
Harry

Having the drive side mounted a la Brooke suggestion would make the drive more expensive by orders of magnitude. It would require a custom run of SSD's just for RED, which wouldn't come in cheap.
I think that having a small portion sticking out is no problem as long as the SSD housing is made of metal/strong plastic, preferably metal. We deal with things sticking out all day.

Also most people seem to be quoting the prices for 2.5" SSD's, this is 1.8" which is hard to find on the retail market.

I guess I did get the wrong idea by the way the Mags was inserted in to the Reader off the Red Station, but any way, I never really seen any issues to the fact of the SSD sticking out, makes it easier to remove, and takes away the possibility of failure from the spring loaded system like in the SD cards that some times simply don't want to exit, and same fort the CF ones, some times the eject button fails as well, so at the end I like this idea better ;~).
