  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE M-X Sensor Upgrade Program

If you do the ownership transfer through the proper channels (ie, through Kelly here at RED), then original delivery date sticks with the camera through the transfer.

However, they will lose the Stage 1 through 3 options, right? If not, I will buy all the first 100 Red One's tomorrow, except Jim's five :001_tt1:

RED ONE M-X Sensor

RED ONE M-X Sensor

Hi Jim.
that sounds good, I have two questions, can you specifies the benefits of the M-X sensor, and what do I have to upgrade in my system comprehend the new sensor.
Thanks, Yaron.

I would also like to ask about the Epic timeline... while I think the sensor upgrade program is a great thing, and will add resale value to a Red One for those of us in Phase 2, it would be great to have even a rough timetable.
I would hate to spend the money on the upgrade, and have too short a time frame for ROI in the rental business... and you can bet that it will shortly be a requirement of clients that the Red they are using have the MX sensor.
Soooo... upgrades start in February? Epic Phase 2 starts shipping in... March? June? August?
Any info at all would help us make intelligent business decisions...
Cheers,
Harry

Exactly.

The announcement of a definitive and imminent timeline for sensor upgrade but no definitive information on the Epic-X upgrade path makes it impossible for your customers to make an informed decision.

Yes, me too. I'd like to do this ONLY if stage 2 has been pushed back to summer (at the earliest) - since I would be using my savings for Epic to do this upgrade.

24 thousand USD for STAGE 2...you walk away with EPIC-X and an MX upgraded R1. Not bad at all RED, decisions decisions. One I cant until I have some more info, both specs on MX and EPIC schedule.

... and what about upgrading after the stage we select, is this okay?

Processing footage?

Processing footage?

Footage from the upgraded cameras will need to be processed using a new version of REDCINE-X that will be released next week with the SDK to follow.

Hey Jarred,

Rockin' news! I will patiently await the invitation to order my sensor upgrade (being #5711). Question: when you mention the above, are you talking about footage for grading? Or making rushes? As part of the service I provide to my clients, render all footage to ProRes in REDRushes for them to edit. I hope that this workflow can continue and not have to invest in the REDRocket card just so that I need to render footage.

Best,
-Robin

Ok

one serious question.

Is the EPIC program on schedule?

The answer is important to figure out what the upgrade investment is on a monthly basis.

David

I second this question.

Fantastic news!

1-For customers in Europe any clue on how we can avoid paying taxes on the full price of the Red One when it gets back from the upgrade (We had to pay taxes in full again on the Red zoom 18-50 coming back from the states)?

2- Agree it would be nice to know the timing between upgrade and Epic program stage two...

But it's fantastic news!

Footage from the upgraded cameras will need to be processed using a new version of REDCINE-X that will be released next week with the SDK to follow.

There is also bundle price for the sensor upgrade plus a RED Rocket™™™ card for $8750.

This is all great news.

I'm unclear on a couple of important issues.

According to Jim's post the new footage will need to be processed via a new version of REDCINE-X (note not ROCKETCINE-X), yet RED is offering a very good deal on a Rocket bundle.

I'd like to know for certain what software will be available at the outset for early M-X sensor adopters and if it will take advantage of the Rocket. I'm happy to pay the cost of being on the bleeding edge, but as I only have one RED One, I'll be putting all my eggs into one basket. Being a prudent man, I'd like to front load any learning curve, and test the post process to any extent possible

I'll bet others are in the same boat.

I have a suggestion.

Collect the full fee of the Rocket/Sensor bundle up front, and process per delivery date as is the current plan. However ship the Rocket immediately upon payment, and make some sample R3D's available at the various resolutions from the new sensor online.

That way the majority of owners will have the ability to pay the learning curve of the new software and figure out any gotchas in workflow before or during camera upgrade, and we minimize risk to production.

Make sense?

One more thing, add my voice to the "Would you please provide any updated information you have available about stage delivery" queries. The 18 is about to ship, I'd really welcome a high quality light weight zoom. (The 18-85 is a beautiful lens, but she's a beefy baby), and I've got a feeling there are some more tools going to be sprung on us soon, and then there is REDRAY.

In short, I might as well just assign my 401k over to Kelly :-)

But while I'm ready to settle for a shopping cart and a sleeping bag as a retirement plan, I will still require the occasional trip to Jack in the Box for 99 cent tacos to keep myself ambulatory.

Any guidance at all that will help me manage cash flow would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

I thought that RocketCine-X was just a ruff app so you could actually use RedRocket when it first came out.
RedCine-X is the app to use, it will also support RedRocket.

At least that my understanding, but I could be very wrong

The Mysterium-Xploration ...

The Mysterium-Xploration ...

wow awesome!!!! does anyone know of any comparison tests that have been shot with the REDONE 4K vs the new M-X sensor? the new sensor will be 5K in the REDONE right?

Mike,

We've been grading Mysterium-X footage all week .... have to say the RED boys have really done their homework .... many more stops of useable DR ... FLUT color science really helps with skin tones and color balancing ... RedRocket and Redcine-X are a killer combination ... we shot some charts side by side with M-X and Red One and the improvements in sensor sensitivity, color saturation and noise levels are truly dramatic.

Hope you can make it to the RED DAY this Saturday (Jan 16th) at Ren Mar Studios in Hollywood ... all will be revealed .... your eyes are in for a VISUAL FEAST and any doubts about Jim's approach to changing the digital cinema world will be removed.

If you can't make it to the RED Days on Jan 16th or Feb 13th we're organizing a REDneck Open House Day here on The Lot on Saturday Feb 20th ... we'll have side by side comparisons of R1 and M-X shots plus a film-out of some cool M-X graded footage and a chance to mix and mingle with DPs who have shot with M-X sensor ... you'll be able to discuss workflow and delivery strategies with the guys that have actually done it. I'll post more details in early February.

2010 is going to be an amazing year for digital filmmaking ... it all begins on Jan 16th .... strap yourself in and tighten your seat belts ... we're in for a hell of a ride!!!

Question

Question

This is my situation,
I want to upgrade my RED One to the M-X sensor, and I also want the STAGE 2 option on the EPIC.
Now, my problem is as follows: I have been commissioned to shoot FOUR 30 minute films in the next months, production should start in April/May.
Now, what if I get my email just before or during my shoot?
Can I pay for the upgrade and hold on to my RED One and send it as soon as my shoot finishes?
I am counting on 5 weeks shoot. Will I loose my chance because I can't send my camera right away? Or if I pay I will not loose my place in the line?

I hope my question is understood.
Thanks
Really looking forward to the new sensor and 800 ASA base...
Also I really agree that the ROCKET is a MUST of any one using a RED...

You have to temporarily export your camera back to US for repair. Every custom broker can manage it but be sure to ship it right, to have it back right.
I paid something like 200€, no IVA/VAT no custom fees, just the broker but FedEx do not manage it!!! You have to use another broker for custom and FedEx for shipping.
Sorry if you pay double taxes on the zoom, custom are dumb, if you don't know how to do it they make you pay!

RED Team,

If I don't upgrade to M-X now but do the Stage 2 Epic-X purchase first when it's available and then come back to do the sensor upgrade on RED One at a later time, do I still pay $4,500 for the upgrade like previously announced?

Thanks,
