RED ONE M-X Sensor Upgrade Program

Fantastic news!

1-For customers in Europe any clue on how we can avoid paying taxes on the full price of the Red One when it gets back from the upgrade (We had to pay taxes in full again on the Red zoom 18-50 coming back from the states)?
Contact a custom agent and he will b able to take care of that.

RED Team,

If I don't upgrade to M-X now but do the Stage 2 Epic-X purchase first when it's available and then come back to do the sensor upgrade on RED One at a later time, do I still pay $4,500 for the upgrade like previously announced?

Thanks,

...been trying to ask the same essentially.

Red is extremely generous as it is...they can't make every incentive retroactive, or people will start demanding even more. Nothing's ever good enough for a lot of customers.

I think that's a pretty unfair view for early adopters who are essentially penalized, for being the early adopters that helped make Red what it is today.

As with any company or product, the user base gets furious when the price drops and it only extends to new customers, and the loyal base gets punched in the nuts. It doesn't mean we're ungrateful, we just want the same deal as the people who didn't jump in and who were still on the fence about these Red products. Hell, even Apple, of all companies, offered 17% discounts/refund to the early adopters of the iPhone after it dropped $200 a couple months after its release.

I might be the only one vocalizing this on this forum, but I'm certainly not alone in my frustration with this. Especially on the set I'm writing from, with a company owned by _________ who bought a couple of rockets recently, who would be getting the shaft on this deal as well for their cameras.

Simply put, it cost us about $1750 (approx 17%) to be early adopters with the Rocket. That sucks, and our frustration should be understandable. Doesn't mean we're not going to keep buying red products, or we're ungrateful for lots of other things, just means this particular deal sucks for us.

Thanks.

I don't think you're being penalized CJ... I think Red is just trying to attract more business and more sales for their Rocket.

I totally understand how this is frustrating for you, but I can also see the bind Red would be in by making it retroactive to any degree. If they were to include everyone who bought a Rocket, say, up to 30 days before this announcement, the people who bought their's 31 days before will complain. It's a slippery slope. They already had to deal with a lot of grumbling over the Oct 29th cutoff for the early stage Epics.

Just my $0.02. And I should point out that your post is much more reasonable than a lot of the less-than-happy posts I've read here.

I got the rocket early on. Like out of the first shipment of them.. No complaints here. That card has paid for itself, and the box it came in, a time or two since.

RED continuously gives us existing customers new incentives and advantages in terms of priority. I don't see where it's wrong to also give incentives to other customers that fall elsewhere in the queue or even to attract new customers. I'm sure there are a lot of RED owners who are on the fence about buying a RED ROCKET and perhaps interested in the sensor upgrade as well. This discount tips the consideration of those items to something more favorable.

I also wonder if the new FLUT and REDCOLOR color science are a bit more complex and the advantage of owning a RED Rocket may become even more obvious after people start working with these new tools.

I would understand if this was a longer established product. But the Rocket, as a shipping product, is less than 6 months old. (When did they first ship?)

I personally waited until mid-november to when the software seemed to stable and more features were added. It still felt on the cusp, software/firmware-wise. Whether I've made my money back on the rocket isn't quite relevant, and has nothing to do with the argument of being shafted on a discount.

Imagine if you just bought say... an Arri Camera, you were one of the first and then less than six months later the company offered a nearly 20% discount to new customers... if they bought it with an EVF, or something. I think there would be quite an uproar amongst its early adopters.

Apple offered a discount because of the uproar, and because they knew that they're really not offering much incentive for being an early adopter. Essentially it's teaching the fanbase to hold off on buying new products, else risk being financially burned.

Again, it's a new product. It's frustrating and I'm not the only one.

Thanks for replying Brent, but sure hope RED UK (& Canada, & Japan) becomes an option before my later number comes up. Seriously, it'd make a lot of people's life a lot easier and less costly!

:tongue_smilie:

I Second this, yes please lets start to see RED UK as a more viable option to purchase and upgrade RED products. It really would make such a difference to European RED owners.

2- Agree it would be nice to know the timing between upgrade and Epic program stage two...

But it's fantastic news!

Hi,

Use a ATA Carnet.

It's a bit unfair to take the iPhone as an example. That is more of an exception. I don't know how often I bought an Apple product that was outdated 2 weeks later.

It is just the way it works in IT.

Buy what you need when you need it, for tomorrow it will be worth only half.

Yeah, I'm one of the lucky people who bought Shake for $4500 and then the price was slashed to $1999 literally 16 days after I bought it. No compassion from Apple and their customer satisfaction window is 15 days. And to add insult to injury, the price was cut again to $499 less than three months later and after a ton of people capitalized on the first price drop and bought in at $1999.

It is just the way it works in IT.

True that.

Having priced products before, when you lower a prices if you make it retroactive, you can only lower the price a little bit. Since it's part of
an upgrade they're making less money on both the upgrade and the rocket.
Since it's only tied to the upgrade it looks like the price is tied to the upgrade cost.

My hunch is that the component cost when down which enabled them to reduce the price. You might be paying the relative cost for the components of the production lot that you bought.

All I can say is that regardless of the price - either full value or discount - the card is worth every penny. I would be picking up the bundle myself if I had a box to put it in ... the flexibility and speed that card gives you is amazing. You recoup the cost in the first couple of times you use it just in time savings alone.

Agreed, a 4k output and acclerator card costing just a bit more than mid range HDSDI card is pretty incredible. I heard another vendor say that the card is pretty much a $12,000 card if they'd made it.

I'm sure there are a lot of RED owners who are on the fence about buying a RED Rocket™™ and perhaps interested in the sensor upgrade as well. This discount tips the consideration of those items to something more favorable.

Exactly. I was one of them.

I hadn't planned on buying the sensor upgrade or a RED Rocket™ until after I completely decked out my Epic with all the Pro DSMC modules. But the sensor upgrade / RED Rocket™ deal was too sweet to pass up. I already wired the money to my account at Red...

Just to clarify, I wasn't inquiring to have them knock off the difference in price for the rocket I already have. I understand the "bundled" discount, I just want to be part of the same deal and be able to purchase the sensor upgrade, with the same price as others that are receiving the bundled deal. Since I just recently got a rocket, I'd like to be able to get the sensor upgrade for the difference... which would be $4050k, instead of $5750.

If what you say is true, still works out the same if I upgrade my sensor, which I'd like to do.

And I also agree, the card is really worth having. As I'm sure the new sensor is!

Please be advised that the upgrade turn-around time will be aprox. 2 weeks from when we receive your camera to when we ship it back to you so schedule your projects accordingly. ......

My camera is already in your hands, so I hope I'm on the short list.
