Hey guys,

Here's a short film that I DIT'd/operated on. Shot with mostly available light with only two lenses, a Zeiss 50mm and a 180mm and a few ND's. We had a very small crew and shot over the course of a day and a half.

We were going for a kindof improvisational, documentary style so we let things go a bit raw. There's not much dialogue, and what is there is french...no subtitles yet, but you'll get the gist of it. Hope you like it!

Seems on the spot. :-)

I wasn't directly involved in the post process, but this is the word I got "since this was an absolute no-budget project, the post process was pretty straightforward - cut with the proxies, then graded in red alert manually, shot by shot, exported to apple 2k pro-res and then brought back into final cut for finishing."

Most of the look was pretty much there in camera - from what I understood it was supposed to be graded in apple's Colour, but for whatever reason that didn't happen. They weren't going for an extreme look, so the tools in Red Alert worked out alright.

super simple, but i really liked it. I almost think if I knew what they were sayin that I'd find it less interesting :)

hahaha, why is there 30 seconds of bars/tone? I thought my computer was broken for a second.. I really like this. I love natural, simple things and this fits the bill. great job!

good job.

to me the bars n tone meant a true artistic expression of the childs inner consciousness, he's a clean slate... but he's also colorful and the noise of life is bringing him closer to the tone of the girls inner spirit, they unite somewhere in the cosmos... and the cubist-like nature of the bars n tone graphic is an extension of the directors authentic and expressionistic zest for the unknown, while still maintaining a firm grip of the nature of reality

Were you a film theory major or an art-school major?

Beautiful. I love the simplicity of it. Great punch too!

The picture's very natural, the handheld very subtle and the occasional focus hunting very smooth. I have to say though, the sound design and music add a tremendous lot to the film. Great ambiance.

*Tips his hat to the good sir*

Glad you guys like it! That's what's really been so great about the red - just being able to go out and shoot a small short with minimal lighting and a small crew - getting back to the basics. Sure I love having 20K's from scissor lifts just like anyone would....but there's something about those small productions that really feels like....home.

Apologies for the colour bars, the copy of the film I have was for a festival that asked for a minute of that before the actual film. Although Jacob's interpretation probably would've landed me an A back in my film school days, hahaha.

the little boy was fanstastic!! and the music really completed the sweet sensibility of the whole film....nice...

Amazing how kids can play the role.
Sean, don’t tell me that all was natural?

How many retakes did you do to get intended expressions?

Like child crossing the street, I see a bit of actor play there, but bouncing the ball and girl looking up first and coming up to the boy is very, very good play or she is so natural.
How do you work with kids to get such intended effect?

Is this just, lets shot number of takes and then we decide what work and what doesn’t or you have to work with kids really hard to tell them what to do?

Sorry for so many questions, but sometimes I wonder how to get the kids to do what you have in the script.

The first entire 45 seconds was genius. All down hill from there.

Just kidding. :)

I liked the natural lighting and its simplicity.
