  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Well my good friends,

According to our team at RED... We have almost exactly two weeks and we'll have the SDK for RED!!!

Provided it supplies all the third party vendors with what they need (Direct access to the R3D files), and as I understand it, it DOES! Then post work on RED is about to change, drastically.

This has been a long time coming, and for me, is the last major outstanding issue with the RED workflow

I'm very excited and just felt the need to share it!

I really hope someone will build the fastest R3D converter (software/hardware) on planet earth.
So we can convert R3D files to DPX in realtime or faster than realtime :)

is dpx a proxy info file for editing in final cut without going full hd then later exporting in full quality? if so.. why doenst it just take seconds to create? or is it also a proxy video file?

Can't wait for Cineform....Hopefully David and Co will finally be able to provide us with a proffesional, stable and fast forkflow for the PC. :-)

PC workflow has been the weakest point of the RED Camera

i want adobe love. i want premiere, ae and soundbooth love.

edit - cineform sucks.

while i have not worked with the red workflow(i can't wait to be in the club) - dpx is typically used for very high quailty, uncompressed output. most of the film transfers we get are logarithmic dpx. while i could be wrong as it relates to the red workflow - i would imagine there are much more efficient options for proxy. we generate proxies from the full res dpx.

if that still is true in the red workflow - the desire for realtime dpx creation would simply be for speedy flexibility to get the hi res into whatever system you want.

Hope your right. It will be interesting to see if it is in time to be incorporated into the new CS4. There are reportedly already tapeless workflows included. Red is not yet one of them. Hopefully it will be.

Akube, I also would love native support but I don't expect native Adobe support anytime soon.... so Cineform is the next best thing...

Trust me native support for Red in CS4 is not going to happen. I read a few weeks ago on the adobe forums that the feature list for CS4 was closed long ago, and r3d support was not on the list.

I would guess Apple would support native .R3D before anyone else in FCP or FCS3 when it comes out sometime...

So we can convert R3D files to DPX in realtime or faster than realtime :)

It will be the writing of those DPX files that slows things down for most of us. Single drives can only write a three or four frames a second so you'd have to stripe across five or more drives in a RAID to get even close to real time - even if you have instantaneous creation of the DPX. That isn't fault tolerant enough for my liking.

So the way I'd like to see it done is with a small renderfarm with a mirrored RAID in each of them. A little 5 node farm for about $10,000 would be the ticket to get things to real time DPX creation.

I would love to get native R3D support in Adobe's suite but if we have to wait for them to do it... well I ain't holdin' my breath even though it is the best opportunity they have ever had to get a toehold in the high end NLE market.

While it isn't the optimum solution, I also want to see what Cineform does with the SDK.

For the record, I believe that the SDK will open a host of options across ALL PLATFORMS... Not just PC..

I just happen to care the most about PC cause I got 'em!

So who will have the fastest debayering on earth with full set feature ?
