Monitor outputs available on EPIC

Monitor outputs available on EPIC

I always thought that the banding we see in the monitoring and the LCD was due to the fact we were watching an 8-bit signal.

RED ONE's HDMI and HD-SDI outputs are 10-bit...

..the LCD output bit depth is lower as there are no 10 bit LCD display panels.

Audio on Scarlet and EPIC

Audio on Scarlet and EPIC

Do any of the scarlet brains have in-built audio? I mean a mic

The cameras feature a 3.5mm jack for each of two independent channels of (balanced input) audio.

These support mic level inputs, and 48V Phantom power. Each channel is then digitized at 48 KHz, 24-bit depth.

This allows you to make your choice of inexpensive or high quality microphones...

Will I choose (yep that’s the word, choose) to wait until stage three, I haven’t decided yet. But will you hear me bitchin about the fact that other people choose (there’s that word again) to spend more money and opt in to an earlier stage? You know we’re right back at no.

Well, I am not complaining. But it does get a bit complicated if you have to figure out if it makes economical sense to go for option #2. You have to factor in the advantage of getting an Epic-X earlier than other people, how long it will take until option #3 people will catch up, what is a second hand RED One worth in six months, etc, etc. It's like RED asks you if you want to take part in a lottery... I'd be happier if there was just one option of going for the trade-in program and didn't have to think about it.

Thanks Stuart.

Honest mistake by me and I certainly don't want to put out any inaccurate information.

This is on the camera or are you describing the difference between the PO and stock audio i/o module?

That's on the camera itself (i.e. on the front face of the brain)

Hi Sander,

I don't disagree with you. I'm in exactly the same place myself.

Objectively I'm probably better off with a Scarlet as a B cam.

And it gets more complicated yet when you try to factor in that all that brand new Red Pro glass I just bought doesn't have motors, and so can't take advantage of some of the new capabilities, new media will be required for the higher frame rates etc.

Further we're going to have new cases and cables, and base plates, all in all $$$

Plus the market is still just crap for me right now, like it is for most folks.

But even with all that, I'm still totally jazzed about my options as a Red owner, and feel like I'm getting a very good deal.

Jarred,

Will you post a four second movie showing the EPIC booting up?

(i know the extra second is 12 frames lead in and 12 frames lead out) :)

David

I know that the focus is on video (which I love as a filmmaker), but I hope that the still function gets equal attention.
I hope the motion function is never compromised one iota for the stills function. To me it's all in the Indie film making, that is everything. There will always be better stills cameras out there. Is an 8x10 digital stills camera in the future?

Speaking for 1st AC's everywhere...how is this a good thing? Another career being replaced by technology. I say get rid of that feature so I can pay the mortgage, or buy more RED's.

you really think this will eliminate 1st A.C's? I think it will be a tool to make their job easier, not obsolete.

Eh, the human brain is much more powerful than any Red focus assist will ever be. A good 1st AC will never be replaced. Correct me if im wrong, but the only solid product Red has released is the Red One camera body and Red pro prime lenses (well, VERY solid). All the accessories are about average. Better than Redrock, worse than Arri and ET. Needless to say, I'm not holding my breath on those touch screens. However, if Apple was making the screens with their multitouch tech...

If I'm wrong, which has never happened before (maybe once three days ago, but no one saw), then 1st AC rates will plummet, and that really sucks.

We have two Red Ones.

If we go for option two—keep one Red One body and upgrade it to Mysterium-X and then buy an Epic-x, that will cost us $24,000 (19,500 plus $4.500).

I could then sell the second body to offset the cost of the $24,000 but how much is a Red one after this announcement date going to be worth? How can we know? Anybody have any ideas?

If we go for option three, and trade in one of the Red One bodies, we will then have one left over. Will there be a route to upgrade that second body to Mysterium X for $4,500 or will we have to leave it with the original chip? It will make a much better second camera with the new chip.

I think this may be a quandary for most multiple owners.

Does Red have any plans for this situation? Did I miss a post somewhere?

Thanks (and thanks very much for the astonishing and generous offers for the next generation camera you are making to the original Red One owners).

First off, Congrats on the product announcement, I can't wait!

Interesting to hear that the Epic backplane is similar to PCI-e, which makes great sense for modularity, but got me wondering about the limitations on remote cable lengths between modules. Since the backplane has connections to modules with both data inputs and outputs (audio / storage) I'm guessing that there are considerations for how far away each module in a complete system can be from each other, but also for the total combined length of all connections from the brain so that latency and interference won't cause problems. This will probably be discussed a lot more in the next 12 months as Tattoos start getting rigged into cars and cranes in new and unusual ways.

Also, could you clarify what network connections are where? It isn't clear from the specs I've read if the wifi and gig ethernet are on the Brain and/or the redmote or both. It sounds like wifi is on the redmote and the brain, but gig ethernet is only on the brain? On the exploded redmote image I don't see an rj45 jack on the board. Is this correct? Sorry if this information is somewhere I missed.

I understand that any "clarifications" are at your discretion. Thanks!

I am super excited that the REDmote is only $550ish. That made my day. The Red Mattebox, oh wow. I'll probably still wind up buying the Redrock mirco one, but damn it's gonna make that a tough decision. Fantastic work Red team!

Any chance of getting an idea how soon the 2/3 Scarlets will roll out after the Stage 4 Epics? A few weeks, 2-3 months, 4-6 months? I understand if you can't, but it can't hurt to ask.

I'm hoping that the release schedule of Scarlet 2/3" is independent of the Epic S35 release time line. I can see S35 Scarlet being delayed until Epic demand is met, but the 2/3" is different. Should be available as soon as it is ready.

But Jay, ARRI does not make lenses. Zeiss makes lenses. Zeiss would certainly be glad to have more demand for their lenses.
But ARRI makes film and digital cameras that Red competes directly with. They had, in the past, resisted opening up their proprietary protocol in LDS. Why would they suddenly change their minds?
I'm not saying that Red reverse-engineered to get LDS support; nor am I saying that ARRI decided to open the system. I was simply wondering.
Cheers,
Harry

Harry, I had direct conversations with Arri reps about LDS protocols over a year ago, and they claimed their were not holding back the specs, but that Red had not chosen to implement them. That said, I really don't know the details on either side and at this point, don't really give a damn since it is now implemented on the RED.

There is a place for proprietary technologies, but in situations like this, an industry-wide open protocol makes total sense for everyone. It fuels innovation, choice and allows people to integrate best-of-breed products and solutions.

I wish there were more standards bodies and open software platforms in this industry like there is in the technology industry. And as "film" production becomes more and more about chips and software, this will become increasingly critical.

My 2 cents anyway.

Imagine you are on in the midst of a tense crowd and a riot is about to break out, you want to whip that cam out of your jacket, shoot for 20-30 secs and get it out of sight again ... except the damn shotgun snags on the way.

That was me asking about in-bult mics. Can you shed light on the 'muc' that Jarred refers to in this post? Is there shockmount housed in it?

Man LDS sure creates drama every time it is brought up :)

Just to clear the air.. . There is no bad blood between Arri and RED.. Arri has given us the protocol and they are being very supportive. We like Arri.. they make great stuff and have always been very respectful.

There are no secret motivation at play here.. I put LDS on Epic because a good chunk of our customers swear by it... it is as simple as that :)
