  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo Battery F.A.Q.

Agreed. Approved accessories should give us some safety in terms of safe operation and reliability. But I'm quite sure that RED can (temporarily) revoke the approved status for a third party accessory. ((Didn't that happen to WC's DSMC2 Easy Top Plate or am I wrong? If I remember correctly, WC had to redesign the internal electronics so that the plate received power from the DSMC2 brain instead from an internal battery. Again, I guess no manufacturer offers a product warranty that covers damages caused by their product. CoreSWX doesn't even have a legal notice (terms of sale, etc.) on their website...))
Coming back to Tilta's Battery Plate, I find it a bit strange that the power goes through both BP slots... what's that good for?!

I believe that it takes the 14v power and splits it in order not to go over 7v. Otherwise, it would be too high for being safe?

But this is the reason why I have never been a fan of going third party for side gear with DMSC2. It's more than just warranty, it's about being able to pinpoint problems together with Red support and not having to go through two-three companies trying to find the problem before fixing it.

Why can't Red just make a V-Lock battery plate for Komodo? We have a few designs now that shows strengths and weaknesses and the Tilta is clearly the best of them having a small form factor but two 2-pin connectors and two P-taps. It's like... didn't they figure that we need to be able to use remote focus motors? It's not possible with BP batteries so why not just make a V-Lock plate that's within the Red infrastructure? I would say it's more common to use v-lock batteries than using the expander module.

If Red released a V-lock module tomorrow that works as low key as the Tilta, I would buy it in an instant.

I talked to Tilta, and unofficially he said that they are waiting to hear back from Red. I like that plate too, but having had to pay for one power based repair, I'm equally nervous. But at this point, the Tilta plate (AB for me) looks the best. Any thoughts what cables will work best with the two included on the Tilta plate? I assume the hot/ground are the same on all 2 pin LEMOs?

Is it possible to see power life indication for GLOBAL DYNAMICS UNITED 98Wh Mini V-Mount Battery
with D-Tap - 2pinn connector? Now it's showed like an power cable...

D-Tap is not a smart connector, no battery will transmit power info through it. Nor is the DC-IN.

Right now charge info goes through the BP mount and needs to communicate with it directly.

I got it. just want to be sure. Thanks!

The design, feature set and reasonable cost of the Tilta plate are indeed compelling. +1 on getting it either RED approved, or feedback from RED engineering to Tilta about what isn't OK.

Now, if RED is interested in making a plate similar to the Tilta - maybe 1/2" thicker with an internal short run battery...

Bought loads of BP-915 and saying it's not authorised battery. I thought canon BP-915 was authorised

They were new, made by Canon? I have some Watson's and no, other brands are frequently not chipped.

I am curious how much run time you are getting from them?
So far I'd say 25-30 minutes.

Any Tilta V Mount plate updates?

Any Tilta V Mount plate updates?

I'll go with pros and cons from stuff I've used so far:

Tilta
Pro - Mounts directly to the body
Pro - No Cables
Pro/Con - Batteries are sideways which is lower profile, but also well they are sideways
Pro - AUX power solutions D-Tap, etc.
Con - Not RED approved

Wooden Camera
Pro - Mounts directly to the body
Con - Requires a cable to DC IN
Pro - AUX power solutions D-Tap, etc.
Pro - Battery position is adjustable
Pro - Compatible with the B-Box
Pro - Has extra port for DC IN pass through

I've finally made the front of the queue for Komodo. I've been reading and researching quite a bit and am curious if the Tilta V Mount plate is now RED approved? Do current users still feel it is the best option? I am very partial to V Mount batteries for our purposes so looking for the best 3rd party solution since RED doesn't have its own adapter plate yet.

We just made a limited number of cosmetically imperfect otherwise fully functioning new battery chargers available on our site. They are priced at a special discounted rate.

My Canon BP955 stopped working…

My Canon BP955 stopped working…

Ok I’m a bit confused. After waiting months to receive orders of Canon bp955 batts from two vendors last fall I received enough to make the camera functional. It worked great. Hot swap, battery status.. etc. then with the latest firmware my Canon batteries are now “not supported”?! Are you kidding? Has anyone else run into this? Any solutions? Thanks in advance - Z

Regarding the Core SWX plate, I've read a few reviews of it being too loose and locking the camera up. Is there a real risk here, or were these just lemons? I'm looking to power with a v mount, but want something tight to the body and Red-approved.

I am using the Tilta V-mount plate and like it very much. It's rock-solid on the back of my Komodo. For power I'm using FXLion Nano batteries (both the Nano One and the Nano Two) and like them very much. They are a perfect fit, even if not RED-approved.

I have one and have used it on a few shoots and have not noticed any play.
Have used everything from small mini vmount to full size 190 w/h batteries.
Seems to endure the usual shooting situations including resting the back of the camera into the body (for stability) and it feels solid.

I heard the white version for the stormtrooper Komodos had
an issue regarding the white coating affecting the fit on those cameras.

Note: found these for a good price here.

Just bought two of those batteries. The price certainly is right, and so is the size. It'll be interesting to see how well they work!

I just shot with one today. It works well.

I have 4 Redvolt BP batteries for my Komodo and all of the sudden, 1 of them is giving me the unapproved battery warning. Anyone else experiencing this? I thought it might be a firmware thing, so I just updated to beta 1.5.4 and still get the warning and no info in camera on the battery.

(tried uploading a photo but the attachments are not working for me)

UPDATE 10/22/21: Received my Komodo and Battery back from Red service and everything seems to be working according to specifications.

Hi everyone
I'm new with Komodo
I would like to ask how do I charge my Canon BP975 ?
is it better to buy a special charger or using the Komodo as a charger?

I just got the Core SWX plate and have been using it with the GDU 98wh. I love the combo, but my camera consistently tells me the battery is at 100% with -4 hours remaining, even while the battery LEDs show 2/4. I was under the impression that these batteries would properly pass info. Do only the core swx batteries work this way?

Not a deal breaker, but battery info is one of the reasons I chose the core swx plate over the tilta

If you contact Core SWX, they will provide a firmware update that works with the GDU batteries. Just be aware if you also have Core v-mount batteries, they do read differently so you will have to make a decision which brand of batteries you want to pass info.
