Komodo Battery F.A.Q.

Just got confirmation on the RED BP battery specs, and it's a bit surprising!

RED REDVOLT BP is a 6300mAH, 45Wh.

This puts it squarely in between the two BPs and should power Komodo for about 1.8-ish hours each. Guessing in practice depending on usage that's about 1 hour, 50 minutes per battery.

Bought loads of BP-915 and saying it's not authorised battery. I thought canon BP-915 was authorised

It's turning off when you try do anything. Just tried to media format my card and it just went black. Then when I plugged it in works fine.

Anybody having issues charging Red approved Batteries via the Camera?
Sorry if this post was already discussed but I search and could not find anything.
Thank you

Has anybody experienced a 3rd party battery dying while recording with the komodo? Does the footage get corrupted?

Not yet... Hope not, up until now no problems... but... Cannot seem to be getting the battery info on the LCD or on the mini monitor...
I know that some batteries are NOT CHIPPED... but what about IDX?

I don't see anything on Red.com about chargers for these. Assume anything that will charge the canons will work?

That's been my experience so far with the several different brands of batteries I have here. I'll probably order up a couple of the REDs this week. I didn't jump on them immediately because I have a bunch of Canons and other ones. But I do like their capacity.

I was coming in here to ask a question on power. Phil thank you for all of the amazing info.

I have the Tilta plate, which I'm using with Hawk-woods mini vlok batteries (https://www.hawkwoods.co.uk/Cine/P/VL-M98D). I get the unsupported battery message - is that because of the Tilta plate or the battery itself? And I wonder if there's a chance that could be fixed in future if the tilta plate gets approved? I like the form factor and output options on it, but my camera teams only problem with the komodo yesterday was knowing when the power was running low.

Just got confirmation my RED BP batteries have been shipped. Anyone receive theirs yet? I purchased mine through B&H. Also might grab a GLOBAL DYNAMICS UNITED 98Wh Mini V-Mount Battery for my Tilta plate. Is the Tilta plate RED approved yet by chance?

Tilta
Pro - Mounts directly to the body
Pro - No Cables
Pro/Con - Batteries are sideways which is lower profile, but also well they are sideways
Pro - AUX power solutions D-Tap, etc.
Con - Not RED approved

Has this changed at all? Is there something that makes it impossible to be improved? Really like the sideways idea better than the others.

For Komodo power, both for camera and monitor etc.; I'm thinking about the Titla AB plate (https://tilta.com/shop/dual-canon-bp-to-gold-mount-adapter-battery-plate-for-red-komodo) but have this V-Lock to AB adaptor I have used on my Scarlet. Any thoughts on getting the Titla V-Lock version (https://tilta.com/shop/dual-canon-bp-to-v-mount-adapter-battery-plate-for-red-komodo) and continuing to use the converter plate? (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...mount.html/?ap=y&ap=y&smp=y&smp=y&lsft=BI:514)

Is there something I missing because I don't see many others using a V-AB converter plate, though it allows so many more options, including an extra P-Tap?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Can someone explain to me why Red is holding off approving the Tilta plate? So far it's, on paper the best one. It has no cables connecting, it has 2 P-Taps, 2 pin ports and is small. The Core on the other hand has the pin port on the bottom where we would want the SDI to go to the right angle while only having one P-tap, so if you want to use a monitor and a focus motor powered from the battery you're out of luck.

What's getting in the way of the Tilta being approved? Is it faulty? Not up to the standards of Red approved gear? Or just not prioritized in the firmware upgrades coming out? Anyone who needs what the Tilta has on the plate and at the same time wants to use approved gear to be safe is just holding off getting a plate because there are no clear answers to this. So I either get the Core plate and regret it later on when the Tilta plate has been approved, or wait for either it to be approved or any answers confirming it will never be approved. But I just don't get what the problem is?

Maybe because it doesn't transmit the SMBUS data? Maybe due to some other reason(s)? To me, Tilta's Dual BP V-/G-Mount Power Module look high quality compared to the Core one. RED approved or not, camera damage caused by third party accessories are not covered by any warranty (whether RED's nor by the third party manufacturer's warranty).
In the end, we are held responsible anyway, right?...so, what's the matter? If nothing better is being released within the next couple of weeks, I'll go with Tilta's, too. BTW, does anyone know when their advanced battery plate/module will be released?

But if it's approved by Red they have tested it and approved it safe to use. If there are any edge cases where some accessory causes damage when it's supposed to be approved, that is unusal. We also can be safe that Red includes the accessory in firmware updates, meaning firmware is tested with that gear and we can at least by Red's approval safely do firmware updates and LOG files during errors have better luck at finding errors if there's clear communication between the camera and the accessory.

I'm a big fan of reliability and that's why I keep focusing on Red stuff and approved accessories since that decreases any risks while shooting. And especially with power plates that handles all the juice the camera gets, I really don't want that to mess with the camera.

Agreed. Approved accessories should give us some safety in terms of safe operation and reliability. But I'm quite sure that RED can (temporarily) revoke the approved status for a third party accessory. ((Didn't that happen to WC's DSMC2 Easy Top Plate or am I wrong? If I remember correctly, WC had to redesign the internal electronics so that the plate received power from the DSMC2 brain instead from an internal battery. Again, I guess no manufacturer offers a product warranty that covers damages caused by their product. CoreSWX doesn't even have a legal notice (terms of sale, etc.) on their website...))
Coming back to Tilta's Battery Plate, I find it a bit strange that the power goes through both BP slots... what's that good for?!
