  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- DSMC FAN 2.0 Upgrade Kit

Some in this thread don't seem to acknowledge that this new buzz/whine exists.

Before definitly saying it's a whine that existe in the new bottom fan I want to get a try to have it changed as RED suggested.

Concerning the Adaptive mode it's the best mode I've found and I must admit that I only use the original bottom fan and the FanPlate. If you tell me that your settings are 40/70% I'm quite sure that the FanPlate is more efficient as the top fan. I'll do theses test when back home from shooting.

I don't want to hear a loud camera wether shooting or not. I think I never got higher than 35% ALL THE TIME (STBY and REC).

I'll keep my findings posted.

See you.

Pat

Hi guys!
This might have been talked about somewhere in this thread but I have a quick question regarding the Epic-M Top Vent Scoop.
It seems to fit our Epic after the Top Fan upgrade, but the upgrade instructions state that we cant use it. Is this because of reduced airflow and risk of over heating the camera?

I'm actually unclear of the question. Do you have a top plate on your epic, or the original scoop? Right now, REDs own metal top plate needs modification to use with the new fans. Other brands ironically fit fine.

Thank you for the reply Bob,

I'm talking about the plastic Top Vent Scoop that is used on the camera when no Tactical Top Plate is being mounted. We have also had our Tactical Top Plate upgraded and will probably be using that most of the time, but I'm just curious..

I can only speak for the Epic-X vent scoop which is totally fine to work with the new fan because it actually ships with the fans. This is for those that have an issue with the tactical top plate. I can't imagine why the Epic-M wouldn't be ok as well.

It's just that the Epic-M top vent scoop is stated as not compatible at page 12 in these instructions DSMC Fan 2.0 Upgrade Instructions while it actually fits pretty well..
It's not a big issue it's just that I like my original Epic-M top better than the X, kind of like the signature u know ;-)

Ok, so thats the back story. Looking at the instructions it seems its about mounting points.

Alrighty. Finally had a moment to record a bit of a sample of what the fans sound like in "practical" use. Meaning with a decent shotgun mic and recorder that would be used on set.

Here's an MP3 file for you to download:
http://www.artbyphil.com/temp/reduser/phfx_DSMCFAN2pointOSounds.mp3

Details:
- Red Epic w/ Mysterium-X
- Fan setting = Adaptive @ 70°C
- Sennheiser MKH-416 Shotgun Mic (on boom pole)
- Zaxcom Maxx Audio Recorder/Mixer
- Increased sample by about 9.9dB to really reveal subtle sounds.
- Room size = 20x25-ish with a bit of reverb, matted floor mats on wooden panels.
- Room temperature = approximately 83-85° fahrenheit, no fans or A/C on to contaminate the sample.

There's been a lot of confusion regarding these fans, but hopefully this real world test clears up all that stuff. I've been shooting with the new fans installed and really it's a huge improvement.

As the audio sample states using the new fan algorithms and the new fans is where the increased performance is most noticeable.

Also, I should note based on my observations that on a typical shooting day the new DSMC Top Plate 2.0 acts somewhat like a heat sync and helps to dissipate/absorb heat.

Hope that helps.

Phil, you're just looking for reasons to test your Zaxcom recorder :)

Heh. Yep, this thing replaced a good chunk of my field audio kit.

Just had some freelance sound design work where I was slowly squishing melons, throwing damp towels on the floor, and making rather guttural sounds via my mouth.

Things I get paid to do sometimes :)

Seriously though, this should really showcase how the news are in practical use.

I installed the top & bottom fan and its a little loud with a buzz in a good way...I know its working and it cools the camera down fast. In adaptive mode when you record there is no sound so why bitch? I worked with film cameras and you can't muffle the sound but we made good films anyway. The new school wants everything perfect and the old school knows the workarounds, with that being said... the cooling of my camera with a slight fan noise is better than a consumer camera with no noise and the footage is 1080P. Embrace RED and their choices instead of looking for flaws in their products. Self test or no test your still buying the product so why bitch about it....lets make movies.

I loved the "film moving through a mag" comment, it's interesting, because I recall reading Deakins interview where he half-jokingly said he asked an assistant to tape a speaker that plays recorded sound of film running through the mag to a camera body. That one beats the known "hissing" fan sound if you shoot with camera on the shoulder, I know that much :)

Thanks for the advise and good shooting.

Cheers guys. I actually did a side by side with an F55's fan too a bit ago. It's really good news for us.

I come from a world of noisy cameras, so the previous fan concept really didn't freak me out. But for people doing candid interview or documentary work and anybody shooting in tight locations the new fans are the way to go. I'd even say if you are working in extreme heat it might be good to go with these too.

Thanks Phill for your test! it was really helpful

That was a really good test, Phil!

We are a shooting a movie right now with a rented EPIC-X in really hot situations and the poor sound guy is always commenting on the fan noise (original fan, here). So I'm going to show him this test, just to get him not to hate the EPIC anymore! ;)

So your sound guy don't hate Epic you HAVE TO install a top fan.

RED's one or Mecasax's one.

Other wise you'll have :
- overheating over long takes
- high fan speed during cooling
- fan speed of 40% and more during recording in hot condition.

Phil's test has been made with RED's two new fan installed with the sound recorder set to his voice level and to what Phil estimate to be a normal shooting situation. In this condition, yes, the sound guy won't be bothered.
