  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Official NAB announcements...

I
I'm not criticizing Ted but just reminding people that not everyone is able to pay for such exotic gear and in some cases, a 7D is better than no camera at all.

DSLRs are totally great. I use them all the time. I gave my 7d to my daughter, and she's making great YouTubes. They are a wonderful tool for students on a budget and pros who need a versatile small camera on projects that can use a highly compressed codec. Horses for courses.

The point is it's not arrogant to point out that the native codec of a $2000 still camera is good for the web, and in a completely different league than Epic, which is being used with $50K lenses to make images to project on a 60 ft. screen.

Compared to ProRes, H264 is ugly. Compared to uncompressed 1080, it's really ugly. A comparison with 5K raw is just silly, as is criticizing Ted for making this simple observation. It has nothing to do with who can afford what.

Thanks for checking in, Jarred. But get some sleep. I know how exhausting the show is. (confession - I used to work the Sony booth - kept me in betacams for years.)

VDSLR's are great... they helped change the industry. There is a place and a customer for every camera out there right now.

Our goal is to make cameras that are suitable replacements to Film as Film comes closer and closer to its well deserved retirement. RED aside... if someone tries to say the footage from any of the current VDSLR's is a suitable replacement for 35mm Film they need to have their head examined.

Have to agree. I don't own a RED camera, I just really frikin' want to, I shoot on DSLR and EX1 professionally. As much as I love them, they are not going to revolutionise film, they revolutionised the access to 'film like' imagery, but that's a different thing.

I have just watched through the videos mentioned in this thread concerning Ted and took no offence to what he was saying at all. He gave DSLR's enough respect to say that they can achieve a good enough 1080p image but that if you want cutting edge you need to be looking at Epic. I honestly can't see what the problem is. And that's not even mentioning that the guy is there to do a job and promote RED cameras, why would he pander to any other camera?

Agree with Jarred, I think those people got dropped on their heads as babies!

He might've actually implied less—and I agree. I have a bunch of 7Ds and I always cringe anytime I do full playback. IMO, 7D footage looks best at 960x540.

Ted was offering something; he's not demanding that you drop your DSLR, he's not criticizing it, he's not asking you to spend the kid's milk money - he is simply giving info to those that might be in the position to act on it. And there are many that will do so. Many. And, Epic S and Scarlet fixed are a steal for any half assed serious image-maker out there, not to mention the pros that will be all over them.

Nobody considers DSLRs competition. Ted didn't look down on anything, he made a clear distinction. Again with turning facts into closet monsters. There IS a monumental gap between them. DLSRs ARE lower IQ. I understand and I am sorry if it hurts your ears. Same goes for those not wanting to accept that cameras from other big companies WILL be severely overpriced the second you have the opportunity to have an Epic shipped to you.

If I were Ted I would feel more than happy with the way I presented the information in the thousand interviews I watched him give.

Furthermore, if I had already payed piles of cash for an M, you bet your butt I'd be grinning when seeing him point out a line that is already there.

And more importantly to Red, if I am going to pay piles of cash for an Epic in the future, then you bet your bee hind it makes me feel better that they are out there making things clear for those that are too blind to see it (if there are any left!).

I many be really into Red's stuff. I am into a lot of the best stuff that's around. But keep in mind my only personal camera at the moment is a DLSR, and I am having lots of fun with it.

(...)VDSLR's are great... they helped change the industry.

That they did; with a very key word being "helped". Because they were nothing but a desperate reactionary move to Red's first cinema CMOS camera and Epic's announcement. 0.02

I have been lurking around on this forum for years now and am kinda embarrassed to only now be posting my 1st reply.

That being said I was curious if anyone at NAB has heard any further news on the availability of Light Iron's Live Play ipad app? We were supposed to be at NAB this year, but unfortunately got bogged down with production work. The last I read Michael was supposed to be Showing it off at yesterday's Final Cut Pro Users Group SuperMeet and this morning at the Hollywood Post Alliance Post Pit. Our company out in China has been dying to get our hands on the app, but can't seem to find any updates online.

Hello Red Team! Great work on the Red Booth at NAB 2011 floor and the film Tattoo. It looks like a lot of hard work and effort was put in. It was also nice to see and meet the faces I've spoken with on the phone or read post of here on RED USER group.

If a NAB attendee didn't even know what a RED camera is, the camera corral alone tells tells them RED is a different kind of company. No overly lit cowboys on broncos or pretty models chopping vegetables like other camera companies have. Just a scenario that leaves a lasting impression, particularly for the models!

As for Ted. Someone should check to see if the camera is fused to his hand. I haven't seen a photo or video of him with out it! ;)

So - since when isn't a company allowed to make a little fun of their competitors? Ted clearly is making a joke (though with a bit of truth in there). The DSLRs really aren't professional movie cameras in so many ways. Sure - people can shoot movies with them but there are so many workarounds required to shoot with these things professionally, that it's almost not worth while.

Besides - in the end we all know it's possible to tell stories with even an iPhone or a GoPro camera so it's kind of meaningless to discuss which camera is the best. There's one for every person, pocket and project. If you can shoot a movie with a mobile phone or an iPad - more power to you! :-)

Man, there are some tightly wound fellas around here. Jim could gold plate these things and give them away for free and he'd still be insulting someone or another.

Ha! Yeah, doctors should add "rage induced by obsession with camera products" as a risk factor for heart disease.

Hey Jim, everything you said is totally understandable. Keep up the good work Red Team!
My only suggestion as a customer is exactly what you said. Do not give away to the competition whats coming up and only announce dates that you are sure off.
Peace out from Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Any delay gives me more time to save up, so I don't mind at all :-) and its not as if i'm sitting on my hands doing nothing while I wait, I'm still finding work with other cameras in the meantime, but what Red is creating is going to be Epic and turn people Scarlet ... see what I did there? Keep up the good work guys, wish I could have been there for NAB but hopefully I'll get to pop by the hollywood studio in August to say hi!

SCARLET "LINEUP"?

in the cinema5D interview, Ted said that the interchangeable SCARLET went into the EPIC-S package.
Probably it was just misunderstandable the way he said it, but I thought the line up will be

Scarlet 8x fixed, Scarlet 2/3 "cinema" (interchangeable with 2/3 sensor), EPIC-S (S35 sensor, ex Scarlet-S35) ....

anyone who can clarify if this is still true, I'm pretty sure it is, just looking for reaffirmation :)

Patrick, you're correct. The Scarlet-S5 is now the Epic-S and is built inside the slightly larger Epic housing.

The only "Scarlet" camera that exists in functional form at the moment is the 8X fixed model. The 2/3" Scarlet-Cinema (with interchangeable lenses) is still on the table, but a bit farther behind.

...Or at least that was the case, the last time I heard it from RED on monday. All things subject to change and all that.

thanks a lot jeff! "still on the table" - that's all I wanted to hear!

we know the drill - all things subject to change. that's what it seems where the FF35 Monstro went - into change... and a dragon upgrade ;) who knows.
hey speculating is so much fun around these places, it's unbearable. who knows, maybe until the Scarlet 2/3" interchangeable comes out, I might be able
to afford the EPIC ;) *sigh*

thanks again, jeff!

I agree Jarred. Overall, I think the DSLR vs Red debate is pretty moot. In terms of the vDSLR movement, I have the most respect for guys like Vincent LaForet (who has shot a decent amount on Red) and shares a TON with people not just about DSLR's but filmmaking and photography as art. Also, Philip Bloom is another DSLR guru who is great. Interestingly enough, he has been quoted several times as saying the Epic is his "dream camera" even though all of his current client work is on DSLR/AF100. There's no need for either side to be combative -- different horses for different courses ...
